Can my doctor from across the country somehow support me in trying to obtain a drug?

I recently moved to California. I'm trying to be off-label prescribed an opiate for psychological issues (it's the only type of pharmaceutical I'm willing to take). The last time I had an appointment with my psychiatrist he prescribed me Tramadol, which is a synthetic drug that's related to opiates. My doctor knew what I really wanted was a true opiate; and he mentioned to me that he has apprehensively prescribed hydrocodone to people in the past.

My question is should I bother contacting him, is there anything he can do or should I just start hitting up doctors here? Also, do you think asking psychiatrists to off-label prescribe an opiate is a waste of my time?

When I lived in NYC I was getting a large benzo script at first I asked my doctor [chicago] if he could put me intouch with a doctor or something out there. He said ughh... We decided he would continue writing the script [6 refills] and my Mother would just Fed Ex um to me. Saved alot of headaches.

Peace,

red, of course you should call your old doctor!! There's not really anything that anyone on here can do or say to shed any light on your situation. Speaking directly to your doctor is your best bet. After that, if they can't help you out, you should try and find a reputable psychiatrist and explain your history to them and try and negotiate a similar treatment protocol. Your old doctor will hopefully have a contact for you to try over in California.

Just a reminder to be cautious with your wording of threads like this, as we do not condone the act of "doctor-shopping" on Bluelight. The title of your thread implies that you are considering an illegal or unethical route of obtaining meds, which we obviously can't allow on BL.

Also, no drug talk in Second Opinion ;)
Moving to OD.

Good luck man!

Call. Certainly couldn't hurt. Just say that you trust his opinion and do not wish to change to a less informed Dr just because of a change in your location. However, many Dr.s require that you come in for regular check ups to get your script....
There are people that get Tramadol from overseas. There are people who get Tramadol from websites and have it shipped to them from a Dr.
I'm sure you can work it out. Perhaps you don't even need to though. Tramadol is not currently scheduled as a narcotic in many places in the U.S. But if you want you insurance to pay you should try getting it from a legit source.

Anyone know of any laws that say you have to get your scripts from a Dr. in the same state? I don't.

Well, for starters, you're gonna have a hard time getting opiates prescribed for an off-label purpose especially given the climate of opiate prescriptions these days. Unless, of course, you're doc was a pain mgt doc in south florida. Secondly, any kind of scheduled opiate will require a hard copy of a prescription to get it filled- he won't be able to call in from half way across the country. That being said, if he supports this idea he could forward these files to a new doctor which would help make your case to your new Doc. Good luck my friend!
