Bush Doof - Hints & Tips

Blowup mattresses are a disaster in the cold as they will not insulate you.

They are always going down and are either to bloody hard or to bloody soft.

That's exactly the problem I find.

I have slept in a swag before and I didn't find it that comfortable - I get pretty claustrophobic.

I'm thinking that the self-inflating mattress, on top of some rubber floor mats, with a doona as an underlayer might be the best option.

We took a big piece of high density foam with us to Rainbow this year - after folding it and roping it up, it was surprisingly compact, and i have *never* slept so soundly before at a festival/doof... the foam kept in the warmth from the day, it was seriously heavenly.

hmmm, claustrphobia is not something i thought of............interesting point.

However that doesnt stop you from getting a mattress. I suggest you visit a amazon store.

This is close to what I was thinking about http://www.amazonoutdoors.com.au/view.product.asp?ProductID=10132&CategoryID=599

But you can always visit clarke rubber and get something thicker if you wish and make your own cover or get someone else to.

My swag mattress is actually more comfortable than my own bed.

They are always going down and are either to bloody hard or to bloody soft.

Very important to have a woolen liner or some such thing between you and the blow up matress, the air is cold inside, this is why they matresses themselves can be cold.

When you blow them up the first time from being unpacked, they will stretch and need to be topped up, a lot of people see this as going down, it is just the creases stretching out and making more space :) (I know the feeling every morning!)

I love our blow up matress, double height queensize, it is like home away from home, both me and my partner have back issues, never a problem when we are camping.

DFRS, will show you are bedroom when we see you at the next doof, ;)

YOu definitely need a shade area as well as a tent, the tents can indeed become a sauna in hot weather, it is nice to have some shade to go and hide in for a while before returning to the festivities.

go with friends ... if you forget something .. they are more than likely to have remembered it :P

the other thing to do is to group together with people who have been before and see what they take.

my first doof i took way too many clothes .. now i just take a shirt for each day, underwear, socks (though generally they are for night time use only... during the day you run around without shoes/socks ... well you should anyway.. its fun)..

re pants ... depending on where you are .. i take a pair of shorts and a pair of jeans. usually i'll be in these for the whole party. you could take a second pair in case something happens, eg you get covered in mud, water, juice, etc but hey this dries out fairly quickly too if left in the sun :D

take some food ... number of festivals have food to be bought .. but sometimes its nice to munch on some fish outta a can or two minute noodles or something

a jumper! nights at doofs can get cold coz its out in the country. sometimes 1 jumper isnt enough! depends on time of year and location

camera and spare batteries... must have for remembering the event .. just be sure not to drop it / cover it with mud, dust, dirt etc

if you're going to rainbow serpent, make sure you take a Hawaiian tshirt for the Luau on Sunday arvo ... they give out Lei's (those hawaiian necklaces made of flowers) and they play really funky music. its a must see and take part in

was there any questions you had in particular ?

^ I don't recommend running round the campsite areas shoeless. I cut my foot on a tree root or something similar at rainbow 2 years ago :( Shoes off on the dancefloor is where it's at though :)

You should bring any crazy hats you own.

maybe its already been said but take an ample supply of baby wipes. Given you are likely to be sans-shower for several days these are a god send- for morning body wipe pick me up or 'damn my feet are sweaty and dirty again' instances =D

a spray bottle to spritz yourself with water is nice too for when the weather gets hot

I had slept on a thin poxy swag in my tent [in a sleeping bag] and I woke up sore all over- I does make do if it hads to bt best to take something better if you can

Or, if like me, you get particularly fucked-up and accidentally kick out the air-stopper half way through the night and instantly lose all the air in it, when you forgot to bring your own foot pump and had enough trouble finding someone to borrow one from to initially blow it up, and were then too fucked to go around and ask to borrow someone else's foot pump to blow it back up :\ :|

Good times...

My personal list of essential items:
  • water, lots of it, at very least 2L per person
  • beer, lots of it
  • WARM CLOTHES (even in Summer, it can occasionally get really cold in the wee hours of the morning)
  • tent, airbed, pillows and warm sleeping bag
  • change of clothes for the morning
  • fold-out chairs
  • lollies, bananas, cheese and bacon bread rolls, those cups of fruit thingies (easier than tins of fruit, great source of energy), other easy-to-eat stuff
  • sunscreen, sunnies, hat
  • tissues and baby wipes
  • huge beautiful friendly smiles =D <3

That pretty much covers it.

I wanna go doofing now dammit!

*edit*
As for hints and tips, I think my main tip is to be sensible, especially if you're not used to being out in the bush. Respect the bush and keep it as clean as you found it. And because there are usually no cops or healthcare for miles and miles, you need to take care of yourself and your mates. The vast vast majority of people at doofs are lovely beautiful people but just like anywhere else there can be some troublemakers, so just keep your wits about you and be safe. Don't do anything risky like take too many drugs or climb trees in the middle of the night etc etc. Just be sensible and have a good time :)

OH! And make sure you've got enough petrol to get there and back if it's going to be particularly in the middle of nowhere. And also make sure your car is in a stable condition to drive on dirt roads.

I would also recommend stocking up on some kind of sports drink - something to replace electrolytes you may lose in the heat (Rainbow 08 had some stinking hot days, for instance). Also, taking something like protein bars, protein shakes or even (and we did this for Rainbow Serpent this year) pre-baking some chicken drumsticks/wings with honey/soy or even just garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon; chuck them in a plastic container and in your esky. A FANTASTIC snack, and not to hard on the belly. If doofing for extended periods, you need to keep your protein and carbs up.

We also pre spit-roasted marinated lamb, cut it up and had souvlaki for our first nights meal. SO so good. I also pre-cooked some bolognese sauce and pasta, then just re-heated it in a pot. That was the last evening's meal. Yes, we ate well this year. =D We were there for 5 days, though, and didn't want to spend a fortune buying meals every day. If it was just an overnighter, i'd go with only the chook, and all of N3o's suggestions. :)

Mmm, that sounds awesome. We're doing one better for our NYE doof - our mate is bringing the spit roast, along with a little piggy. And kegs of ginger beer for the tapping =D

Also, don't forget the toilet paper. Or the nangs ;)

Take a gun and shoot as many hippies as possible. The ones that are stoned move heaps slowly so take your time and line up a nice humane shot.

The problem is that in most parts of Vic, there are total firebans, except for small gas burners (that are in campervans, etc). Having said that, a good mate takes his spitroast to most doofs as well. The envy of the party, food-wise!

HOLY SHIT!!!!

That's it....we're coming =D

I have merged this thread with the pre-existing 'Doof Thread'

If anyone wants to invite this person and 8 or 9 backpackers to an event please do so
