I'm convincing my brother not to take ecstasy or "MDMA" as he has had two seizures in 2006 at the age of 10 due to stress from school examinations but he is 16 now and has been tested to see if he was epileptic after his second seizure in 2006 and he wasn't epileptic from the test results. He has sat school examinations which are much more important and has been fine without any seizures but has been stressed from them ( which is common to stress from school exams) so if he took ecstasy or "MDMA" as he calls it, what could happen to him? He said he is taking only a quarter of it? Or he may only take one pill he said? Is this strong? I don't really understand this as I am not one for drugs and only do drink and weed.

Thanks

Hmmm... nobody could say for sure what would happen. He might be fine, but I personally would absolutely not risk it. Stimulants can potentially increase risk of seizures as it is, and if his seizures came on from stress and anxiety from school exams, I would be concerned how he might respond to the possible stress and anxiety of a bad trip, or a shitty comedown. Maybe his seizures when he was a kid were just random and maybe he's fine now, but that's definitely pretty risky. Has he had any experience with any other drugs? If he chooses to do it anyways, he should definitely keep his dose on the lower side, and pace himself, like I said, stimulants in larger amounts can increase risk of seizures in people as it is... stick with friends who are aware of his "condition", so if something were to happen, there's someone there to help him and call for help.

I mean, who knows, he might be totally fine and might not even need to worry. Some people have a seizure during childhood and never have a problem with it again, but nobody can say for sure, so if he does choose to do MDMA, he should have a plan in place, be very informed about it all (seizures, warnings, MDMA effects, dosage, etc). I would also definitely abstain from mixing or taking anything else when he's on it.

Yeah, I dunnnnnooo... I can see why you're concerned, I would be too but education and keeping informed are key. If he's hell bent on doing it anyways, you can't really stop him, all you can do is make sure he's well informed about harm reduction and taking care of himself on it, dosage, etc and talk to him about having a simple plan in place, sticking with friends, etc. If I was him and I was going to do M, I would also make sure I was really informed about seizures, warning signs, etc.

He's smart to just take one pill, I think his risk would definitely be a lot higher if he was taking larger amounts. One pill shouldn't be that strong, but it totally depends on the ecstasy and what's actually in it. If it's weaker e than it might not have too much of an effect, but if its stronger e, he could be rolling blissfully for hours on a pill. It's hard to say because it all depends on quality, or if it's even actually MDMA. I'd recommend him taking one and seeing how it effects him first before taking anymore. That's a good rule for anybody actually, seizures or not.

Also, I imagine being overheated could also trigger a seizure in someone who's already susceptible, so tell him to keep hydrated and cool, especially if he's at a rave.

Yeah his friends know about it and they said if he takes it only take a pill or a quarter of MDMA which he will do. I think they were random because he has been completely smashed on drink lots of times and hasn't suffered with seizures and he smokes weed and is fine. I don't know where they are going but his friends go to raves and they have been before on pills and MDMA so I think they are experienced and will stay with him all night. He has read up about it and said he is going to take it but he knows the risks but surely there isn't a large percentage of him having a seizure is there if he takes only a pill of red apple mac or a quarter of MDMA? He knows to keep hydrated and not drink too much water and he should be fine and I mean there isn't anything terrible that could happen is there?

I'm sure he'd be fine, and it sounds like he's well informed about everything. There's still a risk of course, a stimulant has more potential to trigger a seizure than alcohol or weed but as long as he's aware of the risks and he's informed, has a plan in place and is doing it with a good group of people, keeping his dose low, I wouldn't worry too much. The fact that he only had two when he was a kid and hasn't had any since, and doesn't have epilepsy, makes me think they were just random... but still, if he's been triggered into a seizure in the past, it probably means he's more susceptible to having one again, so I can't say nothing bad could happen but it sounds like he's taking all the necessary precautions, and as long as he keeps his dose and amount of use low, I wouldn't be too concerned. If I was your brother, I wouldn't let his past experience with seizures this rule his life, I would most likely still do drugs but I would definitely always keep that in mind and it would definitely impact my decisions regarding dose and how often I used drugs, but as long as he's being careful, I don't see why he should be too concerned. I'm not a nurse or a doctor though, so I don't know, I could be totally wrong and maybe it is a terribly dangerous idea for him to be taking M. Someone else might have a better answer... just tell him to be careful. <3

Yeah he knows the effects and risks and knows what to do and to keep hydrated but not too much water and only a quarter of MDMA or one pill. I think the seizures were just a random phase because he is fine now and hasn't had anything wrong with him. He says he just wants to try it and maybe do it a few more times if he enjoys it but not for a good few months after his first one! Do you know anyone who will have a opinion on this? Thanks

Hmm.

I'd say it's not too risky if he isn't epileptic. Then again I haven't had much experience with seizures. Look on medical boards too, and follow what flailing gypsy said: let him know the warning signs, prevention techniques, etc etc.

People will try things no matter what, and more often than not: once someone has it in their head that they REALLY want to do something, they will do it. Better him be safe while you know he is doing it, then unsafe if he decides to do it in privacy to avoid you knowing.

Get his friends to know this too, so they can call paramedics if needed.

Definitely risky.
Also what medications is he on as they may also pose a problem with interactions.
Due to the way mdma works, my understanding is that it is not something that someone at risk of seizures should be doing.
The biggest concern is that it appears they dont know what caused the seizures.............they could easily be triggerred again.
In this situation there is probably NO safe quantity that can be taken as you really dont know how much is required to trigger such an event.
There have been reports on here in the past that some people have struggled with the affects of mdma from just a quarter of a pill.
Finally the chances of getting uncut mdma are very slim and as such you wont know what it is cut with and what effects those chemicals or the mixture of all the chemicals will have.

If it was my brother under those circumstances my answer would be an emphatic NO.
