I went to see MBV at the Hammersmith Apollo the other night, having seen them back in the day and then a few years ago at the Roundhouse. Stuck up in the gods all of the intensity of their performance was lost and I ended up thinking it was disappointing.

I was there too :). I was luckily right at the front of the top level, so it felt like I was relatively close to them. But sitting at the back of the Apollo is no good, so I know what you mean. I saw them in Brixton warming up for this tour, and they weren't great: poor sound, they kept re-starting songs. Hammersmith was a lot better. (I've seen them once before, in Manchester on the 2008 tour. I was up the back for that and I'd say Hammersmith was probably better).

Interesting to hear that Brixton wasn't great. I was gutted I missed that. The Roundhouse shows were just blistering. I've never heard anything that comes close in terms of volume and intensity. I was deaf for days after that show!

I read that some guy was talking to the sound engineer after the roundhouse show who had asked him what he thought of the gig. The guy said it sounded like he was standing on a runway with a 747 taking off directly above his head. The sound engineer smiled and said actually it's louder!!
