Boston cops closing in on molly source
Boston cops are tracing the drugs connected to a trio of overdoses at the House of Blues — including the death of a 19-year-old New Hampshire student — and could slap charges on dealers who sold “molly” or other dangerous narcotics to the concert-goers, officials said.
“There very well could be criminal charges in this case,” Boston police Superintendent William Evans said today at Boston City Hall. “Whoever was responsible for getting these girls the drugs, could face criminal charges.”
Evans’ comments came at the end of a hearing where House of Blues employees testified about the fatal overdose of 19-year-old Brittany Flannigan of Derry, N.H., and the non-fatal ODs of two other fans at the Lansdowne Street club on Aug. 28. The carnage began around 11 p.m. when a 19-year-old woman fell on the packed, darkened dance floor during a performance by German DJ Zedd.
The woman was brought to a stairwell where employees found her pupils dilated. The woman was unresponsive and was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in an ambulance. She survived but was found to have two small pills in her pocket and a packet of an unknown white powder in her bra.
About 45 minutes later, staff was called to a stairwell for a report of a woman “convulsing.” Security found Flannigan on the floor in convulsions, with her panicked older sister by her side. The teen, who was due to start her sophomore year at Plymouth State University this week, was also rushed to Beth Israel where she was pronounced dead.
Minutes later, a third person — a 23-year-old man — also OD’d and was taken to the hospital after staffers found him walking with a gash on the back of his head.
Evans said police are analyzing the powder and reviewing toxicology reports from the overdoses.
“We know where the drugs came from,” he said, adding that the department’s drug unit has a “very active” investigation ongoing.
City licensing officials, meanwhile, grilled staffers and attorneys for the club about their policies. The club will be sending a letter to the board outlining steps it will take to prevent future tragedies while managers and staff will be meeting with licensing and public health officials next week, along with other club owners, as part of a club drug crackdown.
House of Blues attorney Dennis Quilty expressed condolences to the Flannigan family and said the club is doing “everything in its power” to tackle the designer drug problem.
“It’s an epidemic unfortunately,” Quilty said. “But we are doing the best we can. We’re being as vigilant as can be.”
