I've read most of the books listed, and voted for Survivor, because it is fantastic.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is actually a tough book to slog through, I read it once, that was enough. Don't get me wrong, it's a great book...just a bit of a tuff read.

And I read a lot.

This is an awesome idea, I'm excited!

I voted Brave New world. I thought it would be a conflict of interest because I pitched it but I pitched it because I really wanted to read it!

It was one of those books I was supposed to read but never did in high school. In fact, I had my boyfriend write a paper on it for me because he had actually read it. Lame, right? But after we started to discuss it in class it was very interesting.

Also, it is very available, cheap to buy, in every library and free online. And it's relevant to the interests of Bluelight.

Some rules about the poll.

1. As far as voting is concerned, it is not permissible to create any sort of thread to promote a book on this list. Someone might get the idea to create a thread in a high-traffic forum that asks people to vote for a certain book on the list, and links to this poll. This is really unfair to the other contestants and their selections, and it also promotes votes from people who will not be reading or discussing the book, and thus have no interest in the outcome of the poll.

If I find that anyone who has entered a book for voting has done this, their selection will be removed from the poll. If I find that someone has done this that has not entered a selection, I will remove votes for that selection. I may remove all votes, and let that selection start from zero after I have deleted the thread which promotes it, or I may remove whatever votes I believe to have been gained from the offending thread, but the ultimate decision will be made by me.

If you want to create a thread or make a post that links to the thread and poll in general, but that does not promote any book or books over any other book or books, that's fine, and even encouraged :).

2.
Also, after this first book, I'll take note of who has participated. I'll also take note of who voted in the poll. If I find that there is a name that keeps appearing in the poll but not in the discussion, I will remove that person's vote unless I receive an assurance from them that they will begin participating and I see that they follow through and actually do.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just want this poll to be fair so that we end up reading what the most people want to read. This isn't some sort of power trip. Believe me, I'd rather not have to take the trouble, it's just extra work for me :\. But I want to see this happen and I want it to run well and be successful, because I think it can be a fun, interesting thing to do.

Thanks everyone for your interest. I can't wait to start reading whatever it is that we pick. :)

I tried ordering a copy of the electric kool-aid acid test yesterday - out of print in most of the usual places! Anyone know where I can get a copy?

Will probably order Brave new world from Amazon if I get time today and was also gonna pick up 1984 - even if I don't finish them for the reading club, I can take them on my 2 month South American trip! :D

You can order one from Amazon's sellers market, just search the title as always and click on 'New and used'...there are currently 27 available.

Damn, mine didn't win. :(

But, meh, the one that did one looks pretty interesting, and I'm sure that I'll enjoy this one too. :)

I think I heard someone mention that this book is available (for free?) as an ebook? If so, can someone give us a link to where we can obtain it?

I hope it is. Someone I know got one of those Sony Ebook readers, which is basically like a little electronic book that can hold a few hundred ebooks, for free as a promotional item when they went to this professional conference. They don't really care about it, so they said I can use it for as long as I want. I can't wait to give it a test run with this book if we can get it in ebook form.

Sources tell me that "Survivor" would have been a great book, if it weren't already in existence under another title, "Fight Club" etc.

I get to read Brave New World again, that's neat. That will be twice in 3 months.

BLAH. why choose common books? that's no fun for anyone; at least, i sure know i hate discussing a topic five times over and then some.

FYI if you want the ebook to stick on your pda/psp/ipod (ipod comes last because apple felches teletubbies behind the scenes. didnt you ever wonder how they got those colour themes? the tubbies had kids man. apple gets those fuckers to fart out monitors like chickens shit eggs)

oh yeah here's the link http://www.planetebook.com/Brave-New-World.asp
