Best places in Aus to live

Melbourne - Snobby and trendy, pretentious people, but an awesome night life, good public transport (compared to other aus cities), cold in winter, good art scene, good food
Sydney - Massive and sort of lonely, great if you are gay, good climate, some nice beaches, expensive, also a good nightlife, good cocaine
Brisbane - No culture - a city of bogans, very outdoorsy if you like that, not intellectual which suits some people, humid, never cold, not much culture, close to gold coast
Hobart - A small but nice city. If you are an outdoors person Tasmania is the state to be! STUNNING and still pristine in many parts. Beautiful countryside and parks
Adelaide and Perth i have never been to.

^^^ I 2nd that about Brisbane, but as i have lived here for a lot of my life it will probably always sort of feel like home. It is definitely not fast paced or culturally interesting in any way. I would say the best thing about it is its relative proximity to all of the other nice places people have mentioned on this page, mullumbimby, byron, NNSW, gold coast hinterland and a load of national parks if you like that sort of thing.

No culture in Brisbane?

I lived in Melbourne for 8 years before I crashed headfirst into my soulmate and he swept me away to his home city of Brisbane. I went from a polluted, drab, insular place to an open, colourful, sunny and cheery city with a definite relaxed atmosphere.

I have attended just as many quality concerts, exhibitions, ballets and festivals since moving here as I ever did in Melbourne. The only difference is that there aren't 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 of them being held in dingy little warehouses on every street corner, full of pretentious hipsters talking about how the whole "scene" has sold out. :p

You can definitely find culture here.

i'd like to live in denmark (SW WA) but there are so few employment prospects there. so fucking beautiful though - the place and the people.

My mate I grew up with works in Denmark/Albany for (greencorp?)

She fuckin loves it :) most unreal scenery down there (and big sharks!)

I live half in Sydney and half in Melbourne. I would recommend moving to Melbourne. Why? It's cheaper (Sydney is ridiculously expensive, in fact in the top 5 most expensive cities to live in the world). Melbourne also has much more of a free, laid-back vibe to it, and a lot more to do, with a vibrant nightlife.

Having said that, although Sydney is not as socially friendly, it's weather is far superior to Melbourne's.

Seems to me with Brisbane that you have to look, and there certainly isn't always a consistent amount of stuff going on. Ie. I would more than likely have to find and plan ahead for an event of some sorts, rather than being able to venture out and find something on a whim. Additionally, it's very hard for a venue to stay open for an extended period of time because the 'scene' (such as it is) can be very fickle. Something might be popular for a little while but then completely empty for a few months- there aren't enough people going out to sustain a wide, or even average, variety of interesting places. Having said that, if your username is literally referring to the beat nightclub it is indeed a time honoured institution that's been open forever.

Also, i personally wouldn't rate a few festivals a year worth attending and some more niche events in outlying areas 'culture'.

Some of what QPAC and GOMA has is pretty interesting but the former tends to be sadly out of my price range at the moment, and re exhibitions the latter is the (tying into my earlier point) only venue that seems consistent. Otherwise, you have to wait until something comes around.

If i am wrong feel free to enlighten me
