Best Cover Songs

Dead Kennedys - Viva Las Vegas (that speed line is classic)
Dead Kennedys - Theme from rawhide (love the countdown done in a redneck voice)
Jello Biafra with DOA - We've gotta get out of this place

NOFX - Go your own way ("If I could baby I'd give you my socks" - classic - also featuring vocs from Bad Religion's Greg G.)

Pennywise - Stand by me
Pennywise - Down Under (an american band is forgiven for covering this as its a tribute to how much they love Australia - awesome version too)

Propagandhi - I want you to want me

Midnight Oil - The Real Thing

Frenzal Rhomb - Errol (The original rocked too)
Frenzal Rhomb - The Dead Heart (Done for a midnight oil tribute album - they manage too totally frenzalise the song while keeping it respectful to the original)

The Vandals - Heart Break Hotel (One of the funniest punk covers ever - fuck they trash Elvis's song)
The Vandals - Kokomo
The Vandals - Summer Lovin (Once again funny arse trashing of a stupid song - Hilarious)

The Offspring - Feelings (Nice work in trashing the original - some songs just need to be fucked up)

"And dark_angel177, I'm 98 percent postive that 99 Luftballoon song was covered by Goldfinger and not NOFX. Especially since Goldfinger had it on one of their more recent albums, plus I saw them do it live when I saw them a few months ago. I don't think NOFX has ever played that song before."

Actually, NOFX have covered 99 Red Balloons, but i think it's only available on Kazaa and is a live track......
Anyway, it's nowhere near as good as Goldfingers cover. Which is where my vote goes to:
Goldfinger- 99 Red Balloons.

Also,
Bob Dylan - Hey Mr. Tambourine man (The Byrds)
Nirvana- Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam (the Vaselines)
Nirvana- The man who sold the world (David Bowie)
Social Distortion- Burning ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
The Offspring- I wanna be sedated (the Ramones)

Fiona Apple ~ Angel (jimi Hendrix)
She did it with a piano and took the song in anoth direction.

Jhonny Cash ~ Hurt (NIN)

Sinead O'coner ~ Nothing Compares to u (prince)
she put this song on the map

Tori Amos ~ Landslide (Stevie Nicks) That Little red head Owns me =D

Foo Fighters ~ Darling Nikki (Prince)

Mazzy Star ~ Wild Horses (Rolling Stones) I think this song is just better in general when sung by a women but this cover is the best of them all

Tori Amos ~ Bonnie & Clyde (M&M) The way she wispers it give me chills.

"mr tambourine man is a dylan song."

yeah, this is what I thought, but my mother had a huge argument the other day about this and she said it was originally written by 'the Byrds'.
Ha, I was right then!!

"and the cash song (written by june, actually) is called ring of fire."

Okay smart ass!! I'm sorry: Social Distortion - Ring of Fire (June)

Here are my favorites:

Collide -- White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
Faith No More -- War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Tool -- No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
Rage Against the Machine -- Fuck tha Police (NWA)
Rage Against the Machine -- Almost anything off Renegades
System of a Down -- Snowblind (Black Sabbath)
Pearl Jam -- Baba O'Reilly (The Who)
Hendrix -- All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)
A Perfect Circle -- Diary of a Madman (Ozzy) mixed with Lovesong (The Cure)

And the WORST cover:
Limp Biskit -- Behind Blue Eyes (The Who). That fucker Fred Durst RUINED one of the greatest songs ever written

I'll post more if I can think of any

dillinger escape plan - come to daddy (by aphex twin)

at least i think it was them that did it, but i forget now :(

yep, it was DEP w/ Mike Patton - i LOVE this cover. creepy as hell.

John Mayer -- Kid A

not the best but certainly one of my favourite cover songs. Obviously Radiohead's version is great but Mayer makes me see the song differently even when I listen to the Kid A version (of Kid A).

^^no offense but... being a HUGE radiohead fan and hating john mayer with almost a PASSION... how can you say that?

howie day can do radiohead alright. he has this great version of his own song "she says" with an outro of one--->idioteque.... he gets into using pedals and such.

but KID A? AS A COVER? you've got to be kidding. theres so much electronic-ness in it, it would have to be absolsutely INTENSE as a john mayer/acoustic cover. are you sure its not a different song?

regardless, i think john mayer sucks. and i dont need a reason to think that, i just think he does. maybe i need to check it out.

anyway, howie day does a great sover of toto's "africa"
ryan adams can do a sweet cover of the strokes' "last nite"
kenny chesney does "please come to boston" better than david allan coe!
placebo does a cover of "running up that hill" by kate bush (who i hate) and its awesome
nada surf does the pixies' "where is my mind?" pretty well
death cab for cutie's version of "allis full of love" is more filling for the song than bjorks, IMO
built to spill covers "take the money and run" and i love it
pete yorn's cover of the smiths' "panic" rocks --- its awesome live

ok im done :)

I'm deffinetly with FD on this one. John Mayer? He sucks the big one and isn't even in the same spectrum as Radiohead music. I classify him with the likes of Matchbox 20 and Puddle of Mudd, or, 'music' I wouldn't listen to over a Disney cd on repeat.

That being said, I believe that covers should only be praised by people that have earned enough respect to be singing the (probably) great artist that did it before him/her.

My favorites:
Cash/ Fiona Apple - Bridge over Troubled Waters
Widespread/ Phish - Wish You Were Here
Bob Dylan - House of the Rising Sun
