Best Cover Songs

im not really a fan of covers...but The Ataris version of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" is fucking excellent.

Gives me goosebumps. I think that version(the ataris) captures the emotion in that song much better than the original.

whoever said whiskey in the jar for thin lizzy. i believe that is a chieftans song. and everyone has covered the chieftans...neil young, dave matthews, phish, everyone

whiskey in the jar is a traditional song. the chieftans were covering it too, although checking the ascap title database says:

Writers:
__ BELL ERIC
__ DOWNEY BRIAN MICHAEL
__ LYNOTT PHILIP PARRIS

that's thin lizzy. it's really a moot point though, because they didn't write it.

Well, thank you for the clarification Finder and Michael. I truely had no idea, and yes, it was from WinMx that i got it from.

While i never thought it sounded too much like Phish i gave it the benefit of the doubt because i did think it sounded like something Primus would do. I speak specifically of their funky songs like De Anza Jig. And Phish does cover alot of songs so i didn't think too far into it.

Manson seems to be releasing more covers these days than his own material.

i think golden years & down in the park are some of manson's best musical moments.

i'm sure perfect circle's mashup of diary of a madman & lovesong has been mentioned, but other than that my favourite cover has to be:

sisters of mercy - gimme shelter (rolling stones).

it's really, really good; the combination of uber-gothic near theatrical vocals & chugging thundering guitar forces you to view the song in whole new light. the production is excellent as well :)

Patti Smith: Rock N roll nig9er (Smells like children)
Steven J Hawkins: I put a spell on you (nina simones cover is also great) (Lost Highway Soundtrack.. Smells like Children)
Eurythmics- Sweet Dreams ( Smells like Children)
Soft Cell-Tainted Love (Just before Golden Age of the Grostesque)
Doors- Five to One- (B-side during Mechanical Animals single)
John lennon- Working Class Hero (During the Holywood sessions)
David Bowie- Golden Years (again during Mechanical animals)
Ac/Dc- highway to hell (who'd've guessed) (During Anti-christ superstar or Mechanical Animals)
Dr Hook- Get my Rocks Of (Mechanical Animals)
A Rose and a Baby Ruth (Mechanical Animals)
Down in the Park (Antichrist era or Mechanical era)

Hmm... Looks like his cover songs have been spread out through his career to me. More centered around the Omega era actually.

The only covers he's done lately is Tainted Love and Its a Small World after All... For every cover he's done.. i can name you 10 actual songs, not to mention remixes, collaborations, and other rarities from imports.
The fact that so many were done during Mechanical Animals... and the fact that Smells Like Children was nothing but remixes and cover songs... kinda ups the balance of that..

but whatever..

mariyln manson - sweet dreams
nirvana - lake of fire
pearl jam - last kiss
metallica - so what?
smashin pumpkins - landslide
orgy - blue monday
korn - one

i know there are more. but alas, i have class.

this has got to be a p2p mislabel. and one of the funnier ones, too.

it's 'screaming' jay hawkins.

actually... i don't know where i got steven from.... i have it on tape and cd.. i never downloaded it..

Didn't Jay Hawkins have like 50+ children from like a whole whole bunch of women??

Animal Cookie-- i agree.. i love Korn's cover of metallica's One. I mean.. its no metallica.. but they transfered it between musical genre/style differences beautifully.

Jay's Kids

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rhythm and blues wild man Screamin' Jay Hawkins was pretty sure that he fathered roughly 57 children during his life. He just couldn't keep track of them all.

Now friends and family members of the eccentric singer, who died in Paris last month at age 70, have begun a worldwide search for his sons and daughters, who may or may not know that Hawkins, best-known for his 1956 hit single "I Put a Spell on You," is their father.

Soundgarden's Come Together (Beatles)
And that guy who did Tears for Fears' Mad World. Dunno his name.
I think that Stone Temple cover of Break on Through to the Other side was about the only good song on Stoned Immaculate.
And also, I hate Manson's covers. I hate him.
