its spelled serotonin, and marijuana doesn't even work on serotonin you idiot, it works on CB1 and CB2 receptors and has a SLIGHT affinity for dopamine. i'm not saying its an anti-depressant or not, but for the love of god shut up when you dont know what you're talking about. marijuana is neuroprotective and doesn't kill brain cells. UGH. :X

anyway back to topic....

I'm taking Lexapro 20mg a day in 10mg divided doses AM and PM.

I've been on it for a couple of months now and it is making me horribly depressed, i guess its helping my anxiety but i never was depressed prior to taking it.

I'm thinking about switching to Remeron, as i need weight gain / help with sleep. How is Remeron for anxiety (i have social anxiety disorder and panic disorder).

thanks
remeron works great for my anxiety. I am on 45mg a day taken at night, also if you want weight gain remeron will do it I have gained 25 pounds in 3 months

Well, for me the closest thing I take to an anti-depressant is tramadol since it's a mild SSRI/SNRI and also just happens to be an opiate agonist. I like the fact that tramadol is a weak SSRI so it does help with depression but doesn't give me as many nasty side effects as most SSRIs do. I've also found that mixing a small amount of benzos with tramadol alleviates many of the negative side effects and makes tramadol more enjoyable overall.

The anti-depressants (SSRIs) I have been on is zoloft, paxil, and celexa. Out of all of them I found celexa to have the least side effects but it didn't really do a lot for my depression. Now I am happy with just tramadol. Sometimes I can take as little as 150mg per day.

As for an OTC solution, I guess 5-HTP (the serotonin precursor) could potentially be an alright anti-depressant if your problem is a chemical imbalance. St. Johns Wort is the only other thing that comes to mind. It is possibly an MAOI which means it doesn't mix well with many foods and other drugs.

Animal experiments have shown that hypericin in St. John's Wort may be an MAO inhibitor though the results are not conclusive and some research has shown it not to be an MAO inhibitor. Recent studies, however, have linked the anti-depressive effects of St. John's Wort to various xanthones and flavonoids that act as monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Some preliminary tests on animals and humans have confirmed this activity. Standard reference works attribute the anti-depressive effects of St. John's Wort to its content of hypericin, pseudohypericin, and related naphtodianthrones that are found in the herb.

Sonic, did you actually get your MD or psych to script you Tramadol to use as a mild anti-depressant?! That's awesome.

I've tried Zoloft (SSRI), Paxil (SSRI), and Effexor (SNRI), none of which worked. I've been taking Trazodone 150mg (Tetracyclic AD) for 2 years and it works really well for depression and sleep. Just make sure you take it at before you go to bed, and NOT the following morning.

I posted this in another thread:

The risk of priapism from Trazodone is very low. There's a false perception that its common, when in fact its very rare. For sleep, doctors commonly prescribe 50mg-100mg per night. Priapism is very, very rare at that dose. Your more likely to get an erection similar to morning wood, at worst, if at all. But that's also rare and wouldn't wake you up. You'd only notice it if you wake up to go to the bathroom. Doses of 200mg or greater are the doses that carry a small risk of priapism. I'm prescribed 150mg-200mg nightly (I don't go over 150mg/night), which is only prescribed in cases of severe insomnia and when there is no other alternative. The one and only time I took 200mg I experienced a long, painful erection that caused me to wake up multiple times during the night. I didn't need medical attention or anything, but it took a long time to go away. However, I'm very sensitive to drugs so that might have something to do with it. Even though priapism is rare, even at those high doses, I wouldn't recommend taking over 200mg.

I mainly take Trazodone for my insomnia, but it also helps with my depression. When I was at 50mg-100mg, I was still having trouble sleeping and feeling drowsy and moody the following day. At 150mg, I get refreshing sleep, no drowsiness the following day, and am in a great mood for the entire day. I've tried Zoloft, Paxil, and Effexor and none of those has come close to what Trazodone has done for me.

That is all from personal experience, but it also mirrors all the research I've done - I have to do research on everything I take since I'm so sensitive to drugs. I don't have my resources handy right now, but if you're skeptical about any of this, you can message me and I'll dig them up for you.

hate to tell you this man but i have tried 6 different anti depressants, and none worked

ill see iv i can remember them all..

amitriptyline
lexapro
cymbalta
prozac
effexor XR
wellbutrin

i know it says it takes time to see the differences.. i was on them for at least a month. (not all at once of course)

I have been on Zoloft for about 3 years and it has helped me greatly. I can't really think of anything bad to say about it. I had awful social & general anxiety before Zoloft, now I function quite well in a profession where I have to speak in front of people all day (teaching). I never thought this would have been possible considering the past levels of my anxiety. Zoloft helps depression as well.

i've been on paxil first then lexapro then zoloft then effexor then prozac...

Im currently still on prozac cause my doctor says to wait a bit longer on it. None of them have worked, so hopefully they find something soon.

Best anti-depressant, hmmm. How about learning to 'enjoy' depression as much as 'enjoying' joy, as an experience that can teach you things that are hard to learn if you're always happy.

Quite seriously, it's possible to take the attitude: "I'm in hell... might as well try to enjoy it and make the best of it, WTF else can I do." It's a GREAT anti-depressant, but like all anti-depressants it won't work for everybody.

You know... For most people (seriously depressed) it's just not a matter of a decision. If yuo have found your everyday life constant misery for years how can you start enjoying it? If you eaven remember what enjoying something feels like.

It's not an AD. If you can motivate yourself out of it, it's just mood swing. Definately not depression.

I haven't felt too badly depressed for a while now but I don't eaven want to think about stopping taking Effexor.
