best anti-depressant....suggestions

There is no best anti-depressant everyone works differently for different people. It also depends on the kind of depression you got. If you have depression with insomnia a sedating anti-depressant would be best but if you have depression where you oversleep and have no energy a more stimulating anti-depressant would be good.

I personally found both wellbutrin and elavil (amitriptyline) to be good anti-depressants. Wellbutrin is great if you have low energy and especially if you have bipolar depression like me as it's the least likely to set off mania.

Elavil is a old school tricyclic and alot of people dont like it because of it's anti-cholinergic side effects. But a big plus i found with this med is that it doesn't cause any sexual dysfunction at all unlike the ssri's. It's a rather good anti-depressant if you have really bad insomnia as well because it's a total knock out drug. You take your full dose at night because it's very sedating. It's the best sleep aid ive ever tried by far it even beats seroquel.

Rhodiola Rosea

I found that Rhodiola Rosea to be a good mood lifter. You can buy at GNC for about 12 dollars and it gives energy(no jitters) and improves mood.

Rhodiola rosea is very effective for improving mood and alleviating depression. Russian research shows that it improves both physical and mental performance, reduces fatigue, and prevents high altitude sickness. In one study, the Rhodiola rosea group decreased proofreading errors by 88% while the control group increased proofreading errors by 84%. Rhodiola rosea's effects are attributed to its ability to optimise serotonin and dopamine levels and to its influence on opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins[citation needed].

Substances like these are referred to as adaptogens. They differ from stimulants, and do not have the same health consequences as caffeine, etc.

In Russia, Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root', has been used for centuries to cope with the cold Siberian climate and stressful life. It has also been used for centuries in Scandinavia, both by the Vikings and the Sámi. Note that Rhodiola is sometimes inappropriately referred to as "Arctic Root®", which is a trademark product name held by the Swedish Herbal Institute for an extract SHR-5 which contains unique Rhodiola rosea extracts tested in human clinical trials.

Also found in supplements along with Rhododendron caucasicum.

I have used it for a few onths and liked its effects. It took about four days for me to feel it and notice its effects. The only reason I stopped taking it was my body getting used to it and losing its effects so I stopped taking it...I will again start taking it and cycle it next time.

It worked.

Everyone's different. I had people with histories just like mine - tried several SSRIs without any use - and they said Reboxetine had been fantastic. I tried it & got more depressed than i;d been in ages, plus crazy food craving, and getting such severe chills on E one time i could hardly talk because my jaw muscles were so tensed up 8(

I got 2 weeks of speeding my tits off when i had prozac. That'd be about my best experience with ADs in general. Who wants all their emotions cut off long term like some fucking grey robot zombie? Initially a relief from crushing depression, but eventually i'd miss the ability to FEEL anything, to sort things out through feeling crap.
My advice, look at diet, negative thinking, what's going on in your life, past shit that's happened - aim at being genuinely OK on your own, not swallowing Feel-OK pills daily for the rest of your life.

(yeah, sorry, i know i'm cynical, but i think the things are over rated & over prescribed. I was on Paxil at 17, just like all those kids on the documentary who killed themselves. Thanks, doctors O.o (also: slightly drunk right now!))

Nardil .. Is Hands Down The Best

Has A Shitload Of Side Effects And A Laundry List Of Stuff U Cant Eat (unless U Wanna Die) But Its The Best!

Ideally start with less potent AD's with long half-lives.

After trying Effexor, Paxil and Lexapro ... and as a rule detest the very idea of AD's I've found Prozac has no side effects (except a dose of the shits and mild headache day 1-3).No idea if it's useful as I'm only at day 9.

GHB is an amazing anti-depressant, you go from suicidal ideation to optimistic and once again feeling happy just to be alive.
The dose used is 1-2 grams twice a day, not enough for intoxication.

True but GHB is yummy and making it is illegal :(
G is a slippery slope as many will attest plus 3-4 grams of sodium a day aint good for ya.

Best anti-depressant, hmmm. How about learning to 'enjoy' depression as much as 'enjoying' joy, as an experience that can teach you things that are hard to learn if you're always happy.

Quite seriously, it's possible to take the attitude: "I'm in hell... might as well try to enjoy it and make the best of it, WTF else can I do." It's a GREAT anti-depressant, but like all anti-depressants it won't work for everybody.

the best anti depressant on the market.
For women, trazodone. Long experience. Positive effect on sleep. No nasty effect on the sex-drive (positive effect, rather). Not for men (priapism!).

If a male friend of mine had depression, I would advise him to first try DHEA. It works wonders if you're just sort of lazy-sleepy-bored.

Eh, priapism is not THAT common that men should necessarily avoid it. Keep dosages as low as possible to maintain a therapeutic effect and chances are things would be OK. Nasty side effects most often show up at higher dosages.

I'll concede one thing... if priapism DID happen, I've read trazodone tends to produce very nasty versions of it. "Surgical intervention may be necessary" -- shudder.

ya okay, it destroys seritonim cells in your brain... Durr

its spelled serotonin, and marijuana doesn't even work on serotonin you idiot, it works on CB1 and CB2 receptors and has a SLIGHT affinity for dopamine. i'm not saying its an anti-depressant or not, but for the love of god shut up when you dont know what you're talking about. marijuana is neuroprotective and doesn't kill brain cells. UGH. :X

anyway back to topic....

I'm taking Lexapro 20mg a day in 10mg divided doses AM and PM.

I've been on it for a couple of months now and it is making me horribly depressed, i guess its helping my anxiety but i never was depressed prior to taking it.

I'm thinking about switching to Remeron, as i need weight gain / help with sleep. How is Remeron for anxiety (i have social anxiety disorder and panic disorder).

thanks

^Thank you! You just summarized everything I was going to tell that idiot. There has been evidence that in trauma accidents to the head, those who recreationally use marijuana have less brain damage because it creates extra membrane beteween neurons acting as a sort of cushion.

I vote for Lexapro, I've been on it for three years and like it. Like said above though, everyone is different. I might switch to Cymbalta someday though, just because I have back pain (displaced disk in my mid-lumbar region.)

I think for a non-SSRI or MAOI anti-depressant, Tramadol works very well. It doesn't zombie you out or take 2 weeks to take effect.

I thouroughly enjoy tramadol, moreso than hydrocodone. Although, unless you have a huge supply and plan on using it as an anti-depressant, it can make one irritable and angry upon cessation of the drug IME.

Very true. I definitely noticed that when I'd come off it after taking it everyday for about 2 weeks
