im am searching for the best anti depressant on the market. im looking for something that works, little or no side effects, low drug interactions, and preferably otc. what do you use and continue using, and why do you suggest it?? thanks

Well unfortunately the most effective/powerful anti-depressants are only available thru prescription. Most OTC ADs/supplements are just plain inferior.
I'm currently prescribed--among other medication including Suboxone & clonazepam-- Cymbalta (duloxetine) 90 mgs/day, a selective serotonin & norepinepherine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI), which has been fairly effective. The only side effects I've experienced is a minor loss of appetite & sleeplessness

i just started taking lexapro last monday, and the nausea is very nasty and its messed up my sleep a little bit, but im still getting used to them, other than that, ive heard good stuff about it.

There are no OTC anti-depressants aside from herbal shit like St Johns Wort and other hack treatments.

That being said most SSRIs work in exactly the same manner, so Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, etc should all work about the same.

Most SSRIs may have the same effect in the brain but their physical side effects can be much, much different. If one doesn't work for you or it has horrible physical side effects it doesn't mean that another won't work.

There is no 'best' antidepressant - everyone responds differently to the various classes and drugs within the classes. Generally the first line in antidepressants these days are the SSRIs, and they have generally few interactions, although you won't be able to use MDMA while you are on them, and they might interfere with some other drugs like tramadol if that is your thing. There are other classes but these days they are generally tried if SSRIs fail. You probably wouldn't want them either if interactions are a problem, particularly the MAOI class which interacts with everything, including cheese (I'm serious about that). You'll need a prescription for almost any strong antidepressant though.

As far as over the counter, your best option is St John's Wort. It has been clinically proven to be effective in relieving mild to moderate depression, however, it is ineffective in major depression. It also has numerous drug interactions which most people are unaware of; it has SSRI qualities and also acts as an inducer of CYP3A4 so it's important to be wary when taking this...It often proves a headache for patients who take it along with oral contraceptives, unaware that it induces their metabolism, only to wind up unexpectedly pregnant....

To the OP: Assuming you're in the USA, are you lacking medical insurance or something... why OTC?

The only substances I'm aware of that fit all your requirements are St. John's Wort and SAM-e, although there may be other(s) I'm not aware of. Neither of these two substances worked well for me, although St. John's Wort did work somewhat (SAM-e didn't work at all).

At least there is some clinical evidence backing the efficacy of St John's Wort in some cases, SAM-e doesn't seem to have much going for it at all.

Then again, never underestimate the power of the placebo effect...

Hey man, not up to date on the cymbalta, and ur SSNRI, but I am on Clonza and Wellbutrin for extreme anxiety and depression.. jusat wondering how that combo worked for you...let me know

The best anti depressant is what ever that seems to work for you. We are all a little different, what I find beneficial u mite not so therefore u mite need to find an effective anti-depressant throu trial and error. I tried many before I eventually found the right one, best one I beleive is called EFFEXOR XR that was very effective, my depression hasnt come back since.
Good Luck!

I was on lexapro wich worked pretty well but I was having a lot of trouble sleeping so I switched to remeron. I have had better results with this anti-d than I have had with any other anti-d. I take 45mg at night at it as helped eliminate almost all of my anxiety and depression and I sleep like a baby.

thanks for the replys. i wasnt too clear, i just wanted to see what people were on and that was working, and i got that. i also was not looking for something specifically otc, just thought it would be easier to obtain. i do understand that the stronger meds will have to be prescribed. for prescriptions for this, what kind of doctor do i go to??

A GP will sometimes prescribe, but its better to see a psychiatrist. They can help you with talk therapy and other treatments for depression. Medication is not the only, nor is it the best route.

If you want an OTC antidepressant, then 5-HTP is the best.

But prescription antidepressants are not hard to get, the only ones that work for me (and they strongly work and very quickly) are Mirtazapine (Remeron) and Mianserin.

if i remember correctly most antidepressants are not much better in treating depression then a placebo. not saying they dont work for some people, cause im sure they do. jus u kno they not a magic depression cure.
