Bernie Sanders

Military spending....ugh. It is extremely bloated and so many politicians have their hands in the pockets of defense contractors. I think it is time to cut that cost a little and just stop fighting so many wars. We are not the worlds police force, nor should any country be.

Here’s the Thing So Many Americans Can’t Grasp About Bernie Sanders

Watching this year’s presidential nomination process from Australia has been a very interesting affair. I can’t say I’ve followed every single speech or piece of news, but I’ve certainly kept abreast of what is going on and have seen plenty of articles and commentary from people on my feed putting their opinions forward. What interests me the most are the people and media pundits who emphatically denounce Bernie Sanders and his supporters. The reasons all generally boil down to the fact that he is the reincarnation of Karl Marx and he wants to turn the U.S. into a communist state. That he is so far left of centre that he’s basically off the chart.

For those people, here’s a reality check.

Around the rest of the world, Mr. Sanders represents a point on the political spectrum that is mildly left of centre. His “wacky” ideas of free (and we’ll get to that term a bit later) education, free healthcare, regulating banks and corporations and so on are all actually staple ideas of many of the happiest and most prosperous countries in the world. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the happiest countries in the world index for 2016. The U.S. doesn’t make the top 10—but almost every single country that does has the kind of policies Mr. Sanders is promoting at some level. Looking at the other candidates, Hillary Clinton would in most countries be considered right of centre, not left. Donald and Ted? Man, those guys are so far right of centre you couldn’t plot where they exist—they’re pretty much off the spectrum.

But back to Bernie. Throughout the nomination process, Bernie’s critics always seem to be asking the wrong questions. The most common one I see is “how is he going to pay for all of this?” This question misses the point entirely. Even if economists say that he can’t, does that really invalidate everything he’s aiming to achieve? If he can’t pay for all of it and the only thing that actually gets passed is universal college education and a reinstatement of Glass-Steagall, is that such a horrible thing? Why does it have to be so all or nothing? That’s why it also baffles me when people say that they don’t want the kind of revolution Mr. Sanders is pushing—the reality is that even if he is swept to victory, the amount of change he’ll actually be able to implement won’t be half of what he wants to do.

The other elephant in the room is that the current political status quo is to spend over half a trillion dollars per year on the military. So you’re against universal health care or college education because you don’t think it can be paid for, but you’re happy for your government to spend that amount of money on your military when the last time you actually had to defend yourselves was over two centuries ago? When you’re willing to sacrifice so many of the best parts of a socialist democracy in order to fund a military juggernaut that has to go out looking for things to shoot, your priorities are ridiculously lopsided. The War on Terror started with over 3,000 people being killed in a terrorist attack on your own soil. It has since cost the U.S. over 5 trillion dollars—money that could have been used to save far more lives than were lost in the first place, if they had been provided with adequate health care.

The other nonsensical argument I often hear is that government needs to be smaller, and Bernie will make it bigger by running all these programs. First of all, more government programs means more jobs for people. Considering government jobs usually come with pretty decent conditions, that’s undoubtedly a good thing, because from where we sit, your working conditions are some of the worst in the developed world. No days paid vacation in your first year? Only a week per year after that, and that’s assuming your boss even lets you go on vacation. Jesus, no wonder Gallup polling shows over 85 percent of you are disengaged and miserable at your jobs. But hey, as long as you can afford a Cadillac (if you can afford a Cadillac), it’s all good.

I feel like the states today were not feeling the Bern. Are you guys gonna start gating pumped about Hilary? Don't forget she is a woman and is for free things too. She was just saying some kind things about him!

Don't worry, sHitllary will be back to her center right rhetoric before long. Then Trump will humiliate her.

You silly rabbits. You still think she's going to win the nomination.

She's won't. At this point the who the state delegate race doesn't matter. It does in the sense that Hillary will be able to make the argument that she got more votes and won more delegates, but at the contested convention that's only one good argument in her favor. There are a lot more in Bernie's favor.

Bernie will be the nominee. If he's not, it's party suicide by the DNC that I don't think even they're dumb enough to bring about. Hillary's ONLY chance of winning is to snuff out Bernie's support before the convention. Since he won't drop out, the only way for her to win is to completely sap his support between then and now. I don't see that happening.

It doesn't look good for Sanders. The problem with DNC and Clinton supporters is that they are kind of dumb. They grew up during America's Golden Age (ironically a time when Sanders' policies were the norm) and don't realize things have changed for the rest of us. That and they are happy to sell out their own children's future.

I'm officially now supporting Trump or the Green Party candidate unless there is miracle and Sanders somehow gets the nomination. I'd rather see Chaos and explosions than stagnation.

I won't be voting Democrat personally, if Hillary takes the nod. I've only voted Dem once in my entire life (for president) and that was during this spring's primary.

I don't think I could vote for Clinton either at this point. Before she purposely used her old boy club to the extent she did I would probably have voted for her. She went to lengths that I found horribly inappropriate, especially in a Primary setting. Having Bloomberg threaten to run as an independent hurt Sanders so bad early on. The simple fact that she had the super delegates lined up from the start is enough for me to simply not support her. These are just a few of the more blatant tricks of hers, and there are hundreds more which she has employed. She is very dirty and corrupt, and not at all beholden to her constituents. Having the option of never needing to return to the US, I am almost looking forward to a Trump spectacle by this point.

My bets are hedged, and my family in the states have battened down the hatches. I'm starting to feel the US will get the leadership it deserves.

You guys just need to jump on the trump train. I truly think it is the best shot at a non establishment candidate. He is painful to listen to and some of his policies are ridiculous, but I can't help but feel it is for show hopefully. With Bernie out it is the best shot at someone the global interests do not want to see.

... With Bernie out it is the best shot at someone the global interests do not want to see.
This is Trumps most realistic selling point. He is sort of a minor global interest by himself but I don't think that matters. Thosé in power simultaneously laugh and fear him. Now that I live overseas, I'm looking forward to the show.

These days, the concept of 'democracy' has become almost a sacred thing, at the expense of the concept of the 'constitutional state'. Without civil rights though, guaranteed by some kind of constitutional arrangement, a democracy cannot function. You only need to take a look at countries like Russia, Iraq or Turkey to see why that is.
Without civil rights, guaranteed by a strong constitution, elections can only be about fear. You constantly have to fear that the other side becomes too powefull, because a simple democratic majority is enough to legitimize the trappling of anyone's civil rights.

That's why the next elections will be between hillary and donald. Elections aren't about:"who's ideas do you most agree with?", but: "who do you fear the most?". Elections are won by fearmongering. Any proffesional campainer will tell you that.

And as long as people don't take civil rights as seriously as they take democracy, it will Always be that way.

I think the majority of people fear Hilary more. It feels like it is evil vs stupid. I'm taking stupid 9 times of 10. Hilary will work to suppress our contitutional freedoms, enact social policies that will further divide the electorate, and move middle class jobs out of reach under the guise of free trade. Idk what trump will do but I have to pray it will be better.

I fear Trump more because you won't know what you get. But who knows? Before he started running and pandering to the bigots and racists he confirmed he believes in climate change and he thinks universal healthcare is a human right. I wont' vote for him but after what Hillary said at the town hall to Bernie supporters she can kiss my ass, I will never vote for her. I wish her well and really hope she wins the supreme court nominations are really important and we could spend the next 50 years in a turner diaries dystopia where women can't abort and LGTB people, muslims and mexicans are put in camps. But it won't be on me if she fails.

Yep trump is socially liberal which is one reason I'm okay with him. And quite to the contrary I want him bc he will pick someone that will keep the scotus balanced. A radical activist court has the potential to do much harm to the constitution where maintaining status quo is optimal IMO. Hopefully he brings Carl icon on board and revives our economy. I think he would be better at delegation than a politician though I question his ability to maneuver within the government body. He could just do like Obama and bush and executive order legislation like kings lol

do i really have to join the dots for you? i can respect your voting for a candidate whose policies make my blood boil because you just have a difference of opinion about how the country should be run. that is great and i would celebrate it.

but... it took you a while to get here and you now admit that (like the rest of the country) you have no idea what trump will actually do (because he panders and he's a liar) and yet you're supporting him anyway.

like i said, such fail.
