Title says it all. But I am concerned, a Benzo and a stimulant being taken at the same time, is this common? Healthy? Doc says that anxiety is under control Its time to work on my ADD, in theory, I am happy about this move, but also nervous of the effects on the body.

Hi,

We don't allow the use of SWIM here, it doesn't protect you and everyone knows it's you. Please edit it out of your post. It would also be a good idea to read our forum guidelines.

It is done that stimulants and depressants are prescribed for help with ups and downs. If your doctor has reccomended it, it is because that was the course of action that was better for you and as safe as possible while treating your illnesses.

Some illnesses doctors prescribe poisons for. He will have had your wellbeing as his no1 priority and he obviously thinks that this is best.

From my limited knowledge of the combination, I believe this is "okay" - it won't kill you or do any significant damage if taken under the care of a physician.

What you need to ask yourself is, "Do I really need these medications?" Honestly, do you? I don't know you so for all I know you suffer from debilitating anxiety whilst running around peeing on the wall (severe ADD acquaintance actually did this) and therefore you really do need these medicines to function. If it's not that bad, why not try other measures before switching to medication, and heavy ones at that. Nowadays it seems everyone needs medication for some sort of illness.

I have been diagnosed with ADD and refuse to take their pharmaceutical grade amphetamines. I also refused the Benzodiazepines and SSRI's doctors have recommended me and I am not doing half bad.

Yes, I have been prescribed benzodiazepines and dextroamphetamine together in the past.. I dont see why Methylphenidate and clonazepam should be a problem, as long as you make sure to keep your benzodiazepine dosage stable.

When people over dose from speedballs or pseudo-speedballs, it is usually because they end up taking too much of the CNS depressant, and dont realize it until it's too late, due to the stimulant.

I really appreciate your reply, I often think the same question, but I know that life is so much EASIER with this aids, however not neccessarily the SMARTEST. Until I was eighteen, my psychiatrist were always in cahootz with my parents, and it was an issue of, "what drugs do we need to put this kid on for you (parents) to tolerate him" Then id see the psychiatrist for a few minutes and the next thing i know im taking some sort of SSRI, mood stabilizer, and other garbage, that to my recollection made me gain a bunch of weight, depressed, and just generally unhappy with my physical and mental health.

I dont know if I need these medications, but I know they work. My psychiatrist and I have really been focusing on my anxiety (clonazepam) for the past few months, and i finally feel normal again, not on edge, im not anxious to the point where literally feel pinned to my bed all day, I can go out, and its great. Thus, he said lets target your ADD now, so, here I am. I dont know if I need it, but i have had more psychiatrist in my life than i can count on my hands, and for once i feel like a have a relationship with mine. We actually discuss what I feel, and what medicines can help me, and the pros and cons. That wasnt my experience prior to being eighteen.

Yes, I know the two medications I am taking are controlled substances, and it weighs heavily in my mind,"how long am I gonna be doing this?" I dont know, I can only handle one day at a time, and i guess thats what ill continue to do until I can handle more.

No offense, but that much of a daily benzo dosage can definitely worsen ADD. Do you really need 4mg of Klonopin a day?

Benzos inhibit the brain, slowing it down, lowering anxiety and worsening cognitive function in one fell swoop.

I would not start methylphenidate (or any stimulant) to treat "ADD" if you aren't sure whether or not you need it. In an acute sense, the combination is perfectly safe, however I never recommend anyone, even dx'd with "ADHD", take stimulants (heavy) on a daily basis. They are quite neurotoxic, and become less and less efficacious in treating attention and concentration issues. I don't think they are bad to take here and there to study or for fun, but taking stimulants like methylphenidate daily is just an unhealthy choice. In addition to being neurotoxic, they can cause serious appetite supression and dehydration, neither of which are healthy. They can also cause anxiety, but if you are under 4 mg clonazepam daily, this would not be what I would fear most about taking a stimulant daily. I really advise against this especially since you don't even know if you "need" it. I am glad to hear the clonazepam is working for you with the anxiety, it is very good for round-the-clock anxiety control compared to other benzos IMO.
