Australians : Help me out here - DEFINE JUNKIE?

Hi there,
I posted this in Australia specifically because I am looking for the way it is viewed in this country.

How can you define a junkie, by habit, what substance is used, is it just people who use needles, is it depth of addiction, frequency, behavioural or lifestyle?

For Example: I personally used to be what many would consider a 'junkie' heroin to chill but ice to keep me up all IV
Now every weekend, sometimes with a few weeks in between I will still IV ice only and thoroughly enjoy it (not going to lie)
I have never shared needles or 'ingesting or preparing' equipment.

So tell me, DEFINE JUNKIE!
 
I'd go for the traditional definition and say a junkie is somebody addicted to opiates.

I usually associate junkie with heroin but the scum bag put down intended when I use such a term can easily be transferred to an ice addict.
 
Well yeah traditionally it's opi's, but it can be stretched to include ice addicts fairly easily.

For me a junkie is an addicted opiate user who puts more emphasis on getting their next hit than anything else. Junkie comes from Junk as in heroin, morphine etc.

but it can be used in conjuction with other words, for example gym-junkie is someone addicted to exercise (weird I know) and a bum-junkie is someone who loves to fuck arse

In my book an ice junkie would be called a meth head

But from the sounds of it you aint a meth head
 
I am pretty sure the term junkie originated from addicts collecting and selling junk metal to get their fix. I have always traditionally thought of the term junkie to refer to heroin addicts, in more recent times I tend to more use the term to distinguish between those who may have an addiction and those who let their addiction turn them into scummy people.

I definately see the term junkie as derogatory and I try not to use it often. My idea of a stereotypical junkie would be someone addicted to hard drugs who is on the dole and commits various crimes to support their habit, they probably engage in very unhealthy drug taking practises like IV'ing in sketchy circumstances.

To the first para. Really? I know that's a common scenario for a junkie, it's been portrayed in movies and Tv shows (Bubs in The Wire) but i recall reading William S Burroughs/Jack Kerouac (written in the late 40s to 50s) and their writing about scoring junk (def referring to Heroin or Morph etc) and being junk sick, having junk withdrawals etc. Maybe a combination of Junkie type behaviour, injecting junk, my lady thought it was they were human junk.

Is William Burrough's Junky a good book? I want something new to read?

BTW, the wire would have to be one of the best TV shows I have ever seen.
 
we've always in our group of friends called people addicted to opiates which only wana see their next hit, whether commiting crime to buy more drugs, however i use it more widely now, with people who are addicted to any drug really, but generally aimed towards people who IV

Junky's not a bad read man, but i'd recommend his Cities of the Red Night more if you don't mind some weirdness. Anything by Jack Kerouac is worth a read too.

The Wire kicks fuckin arse. Love it
 
i dont necessarily consider anyone addicted to opiates or amps a junkie, just the ones that have no self respect left
