Aussie Music. Awesome Local Bands yet to own a jet

Re: George, I met the band when they first released their big album. I was studying journalism at the time, and I produced a radio interview with them that went so well they gave me free tickets to their gig that weekend. :)

Katie was a bit of a speed-freak, but she was lovely - her recent solo stuff is still pretty amazing.

Ohhh, and how could I forget COG and Mammal? Two of my favourite progressive rock bands on the face of the planet. Much much love to both of them.
Amazingly the last COG concert I went to was the most violent crowd I've ever witnessed. I'm talking about guys punching each other full in the face and kicking each other with all of their strength in the mosh pit - and LIKING it. I came out so bruised and battered but it was worth it. :)

Yeah. I have no idea why or how, but each time I saw her personal and up close (three times) her eyes were like saucers and she was fidgety and chewing her face a little. And she couldn't keep her mouth shut. Could have been MD, or anything else but I just presumed it would have been speed. Or too much coffee? :\

I think everyone should give themselves a round of applause for having such excellent and broad taste in music.
And yes, I'm incredibly conceited

I was having a chuckle about this thread on the weekend cos I was at a family function and it turns out that one of my cousins is a member of the band..........

Cloud Control.

Has anyone ever heard of them? Apparently they tour a lot and are about to release an album.

Here is a sample of the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQsu1m_DuZ4

What would you call this style?

What do they play............ when are you gunna invite me?

Root! play a sort of Country/Alternative hybrid. The lead singer, DC Root, is none other than Humphrey B. Flaubert of TISM fame sans mask. The songs are great on CD but live often DC has extended breakdowns in the songs where he makes poetic rants about culture, society etc. in a humourous intelligent way and often improvs in bits about people in the audience. Lyrically the songs are humour/social commentary based with very Aussie-centric references. If you've ever listened to TISM you know what I'm talking about.

If you're curious check this clip (I was at the gig!) I found on Youtube. The breakdown is awesome:

“DC Root’s turn of phrase makes Oscar Wilde sound as exciting as the phone book”

Well, i'm noticing a distinct lack of Aussie electronica here, which is a real shame as there's some real world class stuff being produced in our own backyard!

Benza, Sun Control Species, Mantrix (sadly no longer together), Mr Peculiar, Spoonbill and Sensient are all artists that I feel deserve a mention though there's plenty more out there!

Maz: If you want to have a listen yourself to a variety of Australian music you could try Triple J's Home and Hosed which is an hour of all Aussie music.

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/homeandhosed/playlists/

If you go to that link it has all the playlists and also has a link to stream the programs from the past week. I only found this out tonight, because I was in my car and really liked the last song I heard but couldn't remember the name of the band by the time I got back to my apartment.

Anyway, it was The Holy Soul - That's All.

Sydney boys - I like em so far!

edit: FFS and I just realised they played up the road a few days ago. Annoying.

As I mentioned on FB I got a copy of the new Angus Stone album... pretty much agree with the points made in this review, but I still love the album overall. While I wasn't expecting A+J, it is darker than I expected, the review mentions the opening track as an example and to give you an idea, the album opens with these lyrics:

Old lover old lover
Pass the silver silver revolver
Old lover old lover
Pull the trigger pull the trigger
and let me die

(and later on)

All I've ever been to myself is my own enemy

This is the artwork for that song from his myspace.

The rest of the album isn't that dark but it's funny, having watched A+J live how they differ as individuals. When I think of Julia the word muse comes to mind, especially with her very unique way of expressing herself with her hands when she sings. Angus isn't all that expressive, especially hiding his face behind that beard... who knew all this time he was probably contemplating ways to dispose of his sister's body. =D

Okay I'm going to stop writing about A+J now (that's not a promise).

I fail to see how Pendulum are considered to not have made it big? They play at one of the super clubs in London at least once a month if I recall correctly and I even have a picture of one of there posters when I was travelling through Slovakia!

But I do agree with Mammal totally. muzby introduced them to me quite a number of years ago, and I haven't looked back on them since.

I don't official know, but judging by seeing my fb status messages about all these people going to Birds of Tokyo gigs on their recent tour, I'm guessing they have 'made it' or about to 'make it'.. I knew they would go further then Karnivool..

^ Agreed. One of buddies is living in the UK and he told me that Pendulum just packs out anywhere they play. He seen them in Paris as well and they where just as crazy. Thats a whole lot better than kicking it with less than 50 punters on Wednesday or Thursday night at the Annandale.

You could probably put COG in the same category. I think they are at the pinnacle of any success they have due to them

Local bands are awesome: the thread

Okay so the truth is most of us live in capital cities...and I know we all like different musics, but let's use this thread to plug the local bands who depend On us to thrive! My first choice is Tang, they have a wednesday residency at blue tile lounge in smith st collingwood. They sound like a cross between old school chili peppers and primus, and the lead singer is HOT!!

I met some guy in a club in the Cross the other week who was all, 'Is this outfit gay?' and then we had a great conversation for a while. Nice guy.

His band's first gig is at @Newtown RSL this Saturday 8:30pm. They're called The Affairs and it's free entry. I can't make it so at least now I feel like I'm doing my bit for the New Starters Program.

There, I feel better now.

EXTENDED TO INCLUDE DJ/PRODUCERS

Boot & Sook - Sydney's Dark and Dynamic Dubstep Duo

Raz - we already have a thread happening on this topic

I'm going to merge this and thread and rework the two titles into one hybrid-title
