Aus - Teen uses text to seek marijuana
BRANDON Hassan sent out a text message on his new mobile phone, asking a mate if he knew someone who could get him $15 worth of marijuana.
He had just signed up to a two-year contract for the phone worth about $2000.
The phone has been forfeited but he still has to continue paying for it because of his contract.
The 18-year-old scaffolder pleaded guilty in the Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday to unlawful possession of a small amount of marijuana and using a mobile phone in connection with a drug offence.
It was argued by barrister John Aberdeen that Hassan should not forfeit his phone because it was a one-off incident involving a request for $15 worth of marijuana.
However, under Queensland law, any use of a mobile phone in any drug-related offence requires a court to forfeit.
Hassan was placed on a $500, four-month good behaviour bond with a special condition that he does a drug diversion program. By law, his phone was forfeited, and he has to continue to pay for it for the next 22 months even though he hasn't got it.
