Aus - Teen uses text to seek marijuana

BRANDON Hassan sent out a text message on his new mobile phone, asking a mate if he knew someone who could get him $15 worth of marijuana.

He had just signed up to a two-year contract for the phone worth about $2000.

The phone has been forfeited but he still has to continue paying for it because of his contract.

The 18-year-old scaffolder pleaded guilty in the Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday to unlawful possession of a small amount of marijuana and using a mobile phone in connection with a drug offence.

It was argued by barrister John Aberdeen that Hassan should not forfeit his phone because it was a one-off incident involving a request for $15 worth of marijuana.

However, under Queensland law, any use of a mobile phone in any drug-related offence requires a court to forfeit.

Hassan was placed on a $500, four-month good behaviour bond with a special condition that he does a drug diversion program. By law, his phone was forfeited, and he has to continue to pay for it for the next 22 months even though he hasn't got it.

Slow news day?

It's kind of sad to see someone trying to buy $15 of a fucking plant ending up in the hole for 2.5 grand... And I guess it just goes to show you can't really trust anyone these days. No clue how close him and his "mates" were, but if someone ratted me out to the pole ice over a 20 sack, words would be exchanged when I was off parole.

I am frankly shocked. Next we will have people buying drugs on the internet.

Let's ban all forms of communication, or at least heavily censor them, to protect the children!

How was this found? Did the phone carrier report his text to the police? There's no mention of anyone ratting him out, this raises questions about our new mandatory surveillance laws that I'm not sure I want answered.

Communications companies cooperation with local/national authorities honestly scares me.

How long until every byte sent across the net is being traced?

Drugs on the internet?! Dear god, think of the children!

Fuck me we get some tin foil hat wearing fuckers around here. My guess he was caught with the weed and the police simply searched his phone to see if they could catch his dealer. Deleting his messages would have saved his phone I suspect.

for $15 worth of pot, he copped a very heavy penalty.. his phone was taken and what i think is worse, he made it into the local newspaper letting everyone know that he is a drug user..
