Aus - Schoolies downing drugs to avoid being arrested by Queensland police
SCHOOLIES fearing they will be caught red-handed with illicit drugs are taking all their stash at once to avoid police detection.
An ambulance source said she treated one teen who hyperventilated from shock after consuming 18 ecstasy tablets before hitting celebrations in Cavill Mall.
The Courier-Mail witnessed two school leavers who had collapsed with violent seizures after suspected drug overdoses.
A 17-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after collapsing outside the Wendy's ice-cream shop in Cavill Mall on Sunday night.
Friends told paramedics they believed she may have overdosed on cocaine.
Jasmine King, 17, from Brisbane, said a lot of schoolies drink large amounts of alcohol and take drugs before leaving their hotel rooms to avoid being caught by police.
"Everyone knows it's not worth taking a bottle or drugs out on the street so they take it all beforehand," she said.
"You see lots of people swallowing their stash as police go by because they start panicking."
One unnamed schoolie said a lot of teens were having adverse reactions to illicit drugs because toolies were selling low-quality drugs to desperate teens.
"There have been some really dodgy drugs going around," she said. "Because they can't get their hands on them, because of busts or whatever, people are getting really desperate and taking whatever they can get.
"Drugs this year are just really s---, the MDMA that's been going around is more likely to get you a bed in the hospital than a high."
Gold Coast Hospital operations supervisor Gavin Fuller said a number of teens have presented with drug-related symptoms and many did not know what they had taken.
"It may be harmless for one person, but another may have an unknown underlying condition which could result in seizures, heart problems and life-threatening consequences," Mr Fuller said. "Not knowing what they are taking is dangerous."
Acting Chief Superintendent Des Lacy said there had been several arrests for minor drug offences including possession of marijuana and ecstasy.
