ask an American anything

Nah, you're right, the others are pretty shit. The only ones I really enjoy are the one I mentioned above and some of the Monsters. Original, Ripper, Khaos and the latest one, Assault are my favorites.

I don't like tea and coffee makes me really jittery. I find these much smoother for when an early morning kick up the arse is required.

Last five shops were Publix (grocery store), Petsmart (kinda obvious), Hess (gas station with convience store), Walgreens (pharmacy) and Walmart. I live in suburban Florida and big box chain stores rule the world here.

I think most newer driver on a budget go with Honda or Toyota. Cheap and reliable.

The only major local tradition thing I went to was Gasparilla in Tampa. Basically a large pirate themed party on the river. They have a parade, food, drink. Not 100% on the history of it. There are a ton of smaller local fairs and festivals in all towns though.

Nice I guessed 2/5 of the first 5 (Walgreens and Walmart) and the answer to the second question. Second question was interesting to me, over here it's a lord of cheap Fords and Audis for beginner drivers but I noticed the US folks I've talked to seem to own more Japanese cars, which weren't as popular in the UK, and are even more rarely seen in comparison over here in Poland.

I've heard something about Tampa Bay and pirates before so maybe that explains the party. Did a quick search and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasparilla_Pirate_Festival

Here's a serious one for you:

Is there any British soft drink that one of our US Bluelighters may have sampled which they found to be unpalatable to the point of wondering whether it was actually some kind of national in-joke?

I only ask because I've had exactly the same suspicion on the two or three occasions on which I've been 'fortunate' enough to sample root beer.

Do you guys actually drink that, or is it just some national institution that's maintained at all costs despite its increasing irrelevance, uselessness and potential for embarrassment. Yes, kinda like a monarchy.

No drinks come to mind, but ... Marmite. 'nuff said.

Actually one interesting thing about soft drinks and desserts in England is they are much less sweet than here. Ginger beer in England is hardly sweet at all, compared to American ginger ale. And the clotted (whipped) cream on desserts has no sugar added at all, iirc. It's just cream. I found it different and very enjoyable.

Root Beer is good. I swear. :) Actually some are pretty awful. I have had authentic root beer and its cousin sasparilla and that is really good. Most though are just artificially flavored sugar water.

What are British soft drinks? Schwepes is good. Ginger beer is good. Are they fruity sodas like strawberry or something?

I love root beer and grape kool aid (I had a mate who's dad was in the forces so got to go to the american airbase and sample all the sweets and food when I was a kid :).)
We have dandelion and burdock best described it tastes a bit like cola with a farty after taste lol

^ They call him Alabama Sam for a reason.

Colt 45. Or other 'malt liquor'.

A colt 45 and two zig zags, baby that's all we need.

Is 'malt liquor' just ~8% lager, or is it something different?

Something that Americans are shite at. Lager*. Tennent's might be shite but at least it's supposed to be, unlike the 'King of Beers' which is utter tasteless pish.

* & drinking in general. Beer pong and shots of Everclear for 25 minutes till every cunt whiteys and passes out. Great scoopers :\. Keg parties lol, if you had a keg party here the first cunt at the party would pickup the keg like "this is mine, where's your booze?"

Being able to drive at 15/16 or whatever it is but not being allowed to drink until 21, thats weird

Now you say it my mates american dad had a shed stacked with booze and we used to nick bottles of Virginia Schultz think that's what its called it was a large glass bottle with a blue bull on it we used to drink that smoking fat spliffs of Thai weed listening to snoop Dogg thinking we were 'gangsta' lol

i heard rumours there raising the drinking age in UK from 18 to 25 dunno how true that is. fuck tit wank? haha ok mate ;)

Malt liquor = barley wine = super strength 'lager'. They're all the same thing, marketed differently.

As for Americans being shite at lager, that's no longer true.

Yes, the majority of the country down gallons upon gallons of Miller Shite, Buttwiper and all the big commercial brews, and the hipsters drink Pabst Blue Ribbon, which is like their equivalent of (gags) Stones Bitter. However, there are so many craft brewers of such distinction that I now consider the US to be lager's second home (after Germany - Czech BLers please look away in disgust).

Your local supermarket will sell Brooklyn Lager. Try it. Really. Not only is the bottle designed by the same guy who did the 'I <3 NY' design, but the drink is phenomenal, and that's only one prominent example of contemporary US brewing excellence.

I don't think 'keg parties' happen outside of movies and really posh / backwater areas. Or at least I hope not.
