ask an American anything

Nice idea for a thread, so figured I'd ask some random silly questions that might shed light on a few brand/culture differences over there:

- What were the last 5 shops/stores you went to and what type of shop/store are they?

- Which models of car would you say a beginner driver over there on a budget is most likely to buy?

- Does your town/city/state have any particular traditions unique to the area? (helps if you say what town/city/state that is ;))

Last five shops were Publix (grocery store), Petsmart (kinda obvious), Hess (gas station with convience store), Walgreens (pharmacy) and Walmart. I live in suburban Florida and big box chain stores rule the world here.

I think most newer driver on a budget go with Honda or Toyota. Cheap and reliable.

The only major local tradition thing I went to was Gasparilla in Tampa. Basically a large pirate themed party on the river. They have a parade, food, drink. Not 100% on the history of it. There are a ton of smaller local fairs and festivals in all towns though.

I took college pretty seriously but I'm sure the more fortunate do enjoy some parties and such.

I lived in England and for sure, the winding roads were very treacherous! The few times we encountered a straight road we figured the road crew must've been drunk that day. :) Also the fact there were no lines painted on the edge, so you could just drive off into a field without noticing, particularly in the heavy fog, and there were no streetlights for the most part. A road like that in the US would have a 25 mph speed limit at the most, which is difficult after I got used to driving them at 60.

And yes, I think most Americans find accents very exotic and attractive, be they British, Australian, or what have you.

America has so many universities that basically anyone who wants to go can. I am not so sure that is the case everywhere. So, yeah a lot of people just fuck around and do nothing but even ones with serious academic interests find time to party and goof around. Most of my friends were in engineering and science disciplines and we all sure as hell did.

Thanks for answering my questions! I'd love to go to one of those steak houses where you see that guy from man vs food go some of those steaks look fucking lush.

not all American food looks nice tho, why do Americans think just slapping a load of shit like bacon, omelets other various meats and sauces whacking it in a wrap and drowning it in cheese is nice? some of the food looks like something I'd bring up after a Saturday night on the piss after a kebab.

America has lost the tradition of the meal for the most part. That being said various regional and ethnic cuisines serve up some pretty good stuff. Creole, Tex-Mex etc. Good food is to be had here, just like anywhere else.

Do you think gun laws should be tightened in America or do you think its wrong that they trying to take your guns? I see they supplying bullet proof blankets to some schools now in case of another mass shooting. kinda sad

Personally, yes I believe we should have stricter gun laws. Background checks and limits on what type of guns can be sold. I feel our second amendment was neccessary at the time of the constitution's writing but holds little validity in modern America. But it is not going to change. Too many support it. I am sure some of my countrymen will be alng to say otherwise on my thoughts.

Here's a serious one for you:

Is there any British soft drink that one of our US Bluelighters may have sampled which they found to be unpalatable to the point of wondering whether it was actually some kind of national in-joke?

I only ask because I've had exactly the same suspicion on the two or three occasions on which I've been 'fortunate' enough to sample root beer.

Do you guys actually drink that, or is it just some national institution that's maintained at all costs despite its increasing irrelevance, uselessness and potential for embarrassment. Yes, kinda like a monarchy.

Yeah Root Beer tastes like Bad Medicine (and I'm not averse to some medicine every now and then). Got some UK mates who love the stuff though and go mad when they see it on sale here.

Root Beer is good. I swear. :) Actually some are pretty awful. I have had authentic root beer and its cousin sasparilla and that is really good. Most though are just artificially flavored sugar water.

What are British soft drinks? Schwepes is good. Ginger beer is good. Are they fruity sodas like strawberry or something?

There is KA drinks, which I think are Jamaican and are on sale in every small shop round here. They're unbelievably sickly sweet and artificial tasting (things like Black Grape, Pineapple and Fruit Punch flavours). Never tasted something so awful anywhere in the US, but useful when you're in serious need of sugar (think there's over 200 calories in a small can)

I actually used to drink sasparilla as a little kid. I think it became popular over here during the Temperance Movement (read up if you're stimmed / bored, but you probably had your US equivalents, Prohibition aside) and it became a cult thing up here in the north from those who remembered the last Temperance bars, or simply those who wanted to be cowboys.

I was always told it was what cowboys drank, anyhow. Good enough for me. :D

The quintessential British soft drink. It's horrible. But not disgusting, if you get what I mean.

Ditto.

Don't be fooled by the quaint, botanical name, this is more semi-drinkable, sickly-sweet rubbish.

You're so easily taken in by our Olde-Worlde scams, aren't you? ;)

If you must, then go for a brand like this, without the sweeteners:

Lots and lots of cane sugar (none of your corn-fructose-syrup-stuff) and the bonus of 0.5% alcohol content, as it's fermented.

It's actually lovely. :)

And there I was, thinking that my ruminations on Tizer and the Temperance Movement were actually entertaining and / or interesting. =D

But yeah, I know that 4:30 feeling pretty well.

Bit random but Rockstar energy drinks, relentless and red bull taste fucking awful, i dunno how people drink that shite all day. although they perk me up a bit when pissed without stims

Alright set that aside. all the others ive tried taste fairly shite if i recall. or maybe im confusing it all with relentless
