i know where florida is and all but is it really considered "the south" ?
It is traditionally considered the south. On this thread, I think, I learned that the culture becomes more like what one clasically thinks of "southern" as one travels from south to north in the state.
ah but ya see in the civil war more causalities were on the north side. most southern then at that time didnt even own slaves, mainly the rich southern ppl were who owned slaves and many many poor ole boys were forced to fight in something the north thought was wrong for a very small percentage of the actual south's population were doing.
Couldn't agree more. Most rebs saw themselves fighting a second war of independence in the same tradition as their forfathers against a tyranical despot. In this case the majority that the northern states constituted in the federal government and an overreachingness of the federal government. Although the southern states human rights records with respect to southern blacks wasn't exemplary neither was the norths with respect to blacks and native americans. While slavery was a despicable institution that should have been eliminated, the south was better at honoring its treatees with indian tribes who occupied key combat roles in the CSA. The Union, by contrast, ignored treaty agreements and pursued a program of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing against native americans. Lincoln was against freeing the slaves at first if it would have ment the disolution of the union. After seccession he saw it as a strategy for maintaing the superior moral cause and undermining the south's efforts to obtain aid from its european allies (but Lincoln was a dedicated absolutionist in all fairness).
Most southerners aren't hostile to northerners just because they're from the north, rather the term "Yankee" is reserved in the culture to insult a northerner for other offenses committed. Like if a northerner cuts you off it's "goddamn Yankee" instead of "bad driver". It's the same for the term "nigger" for black people, which makes southerners look more racist than they really are.
To our credit as a whole nation, though we have a long way to go towrds ending racism and intolerance, we've come along way. Using radical islamic terrorism as an example...with respect to most of the hijakers...al qaeda's main source of recruits in the west was not the USA but Europe. For islamic people in contrast to Europe were they experience a great deal of racism and intolerance the USA has trully been a land of opportunity and the muslim community here was
all too happy to help the FBI role up terrorist cells. According to analysts this is a major reason why we didn't suffer an attack since 9-11 domestically, unlike our European allies. Also according to many analysts, the next terrorist threat will most likely come from domestic white supremecist neo nazi type groups. Overall, I think that addicts and users of drugs are the last truely oppressed minority group, speaking of neo nazis.
Here in my part of the USA people from different cultures get along. Thats the type of America I'm talking about!
And chainsawr dont ever let me hear u compare a jersey accent to a fuckin retard-ass boston accent ever again. We dont talk NOTHING allike.
not all areas of the south have hick accents, infact im biased but I think that a New Orleans accent (my own accent) is the coolest accent in America, Florida has a southern but non hick accent as does Atlanta
ect, ect...
I don't know how your accents sound to each other but when I speak I sound like Spiccoli from
Fast Times at Ridgemont High on either side of the Masson Dixon line (or the Sierra Nevadas for that matter).
Pop, Soda, Soda Pop... How about like some of my naighbors say, "una
coca por favor."
The South Will Rise Again!!!!
I'm hoping the USA will rise again!!!!
