Are Southerner's Hostile towards Yankee's?

Generally, I'm usually surprised at how nice southern people are. I've been through the South (with NY plates -- most people probably assumed I was from NYC) and I've never had a problem. While travelling, I spoke with some people who expressed that some Southerners believe that Northerners often hold over-simplified, stereotypical beliefs about the people and culture(s) of the South, and so they might seem a little reserved towards people from up north until they get to know them better.
Conversely, I’ve found that some Southerners hold preconceptions about their northern neighbors (aka a “Yankee” or “tenderfoot”). Unfortunately, on one occasion, I think I lived up to the stereotype. When my friend and I were visiting with a family of horse ranchers, we met an unruly prospective racehorse they were taming. While feeding it some hay, the rancher noticed that the horse tried to nip me, so he told me to give the horse a firm but gentle tap on his lips. I half-heartedly attempted to give the thing a weak wrist-slap, which it easily evaded by rearing its head back – it looked ridiculous, as if I were trying to fan the horse with my hand on a hot day. My efforts to follow the rancher’s directions and correct the horse elicited the rancher’s disappointed headshake and deadpan question, “That boy gets whipped a lot, doesn’t he?”

another word that is used but not so much anymore around the south is a carpetbagger. this was referring to any northern after the civil war that would come down snatch up plantations from the recently defeated south and then begin to make a profit from it and not let the natives of the area profit at all. this also seems to be what initially started the yankee attitude with some southern families

Just before we decided to move here, my son, then 11, asked, "Mom, what if the kids in Alabama consider me to be a Yankee Carpetbagger?" ;)

I think Alabama has been good for the kiddo, by and large. He discovered the joys of fishing here, and it has become his passion. It helps that we have a house with a lot of land out in the country, with a pond in front. Kids come over to fish with him in our pond. Now, he wants to go hunting! This is a kid who stayed glued to his laptop and x-box up north, so it has been quite a change for him. A positive one, I might add. =D

what you need to do is mve down to coastal AL(mobile, orange beach, gulf shores) and start salt water fishing. i was in jackson mississippi for 23 years and all i did was fresh water fish or pond hopping, moved down to biloxi and dude i havent set a line into fresh water since then. i dont care for hunting at all it is really boring to me and kinda useless considering i can go buy meat from the grocery store, but all the while i was growing up i fished ALOT and although fishing didnt keep me away from drugs it did keep me out of trouble with the law. your son has picked up a lifelong hobby that is very rewarding. encourage him to fish all he wants if he really does enjoy it and teach him proper catch and release practices so there may be plenty of fun for everyone to enjoy

ny/nj accents are the most annoying to me too...southern accents are just funny
i'l like to begin by saying, fuck you buddy!

personally i don't hear my own accent, i know i use alot of slang/lingo that people outta state have never heard (and subsequently copy) %)

i hear the philly accent and the new york shit when its ridiculously heavy (ya know when they sound like they got marbles in their mouth, not very often). i've been told though that the way we prounce our A's and R's are where the accent is @. aka. sodeR, cAfee, etc. kinda new england boston ish but not that thick.

all NJ accents sound like a episode of the fucking sopranos.haha. the NY old jew bitch accent(think fran dressler) i cannot stand either. southern drawls are alot thicker in certain southern stats than others. after hearing some southerners mainly parts of texas i do a face to palm and wonder goddamn you sound like an idiot

if I may add:

Its called pop you sons a bitches...........not coke, that a brand name.........its pop.........also acceptable is sodapop..........but not fucking coke

I'm a southerner, Currently living in Indiana. I'm from the southeast side of Texas. And yes, I do recall quite a thick prejiduce in the Texas air.

I can't recall the number of times I've heard the words "damn yankee!" Though i will say it wasn't like that for everyone from the north. The seeming prejiduce has nothing to do with the civil war, get real. The only times I've heard a southerner use the words "Damn Yankee" in reference to a northerner is when that particular person had a "Holier Than Thou" attitude.

I'm not sure if this is true, but it seems to be so that quite a few people from the north feel that they're better than any southerner. At least that's the way it seemed when with any northerner that I've met in the south. Don't get me wrong, I've met quite a few good people from the north when i lived in Texas. But a majority of the northerners i met had a "holier than thou" attitude toward me.

Now I live in the north, and most people don't even realise that i'm not from around here. Some do, but i've had a few people treat me like an idiot just because they realise I'm from the south and act like I'm a lesser being. So many people here seem to think that everyone from the south are nothing more than rednecks stuck on the civil war. This is not true. Sure, this kind of bugs me, but I don't really let it get to me much.
No one here is better than me. I am better than no one here.

People do look at me like I'm crazy most of the time when i say soda instead of pop.

not all areas of the south have hick accents, infact im biased but I think that a New Orleans accent (my own accent) is the coolest accent in America, Florida has a southern but non hick accent as does Atlanta

Yeah man I had the longest conversation with these girls from AL about the words I say and my accent but the longest came about my using the word pop

the nola accent has the french and cajun influences in it making def a bit different than any southern accent. and then there is ppl from nola that speak nothing but creole and you cannot undersatand a single word. like the guy in the movie waterboy
