Ya the movie as disturbing as it was was actually pretty tame compared to what actually happened. This is one case where real life is way more fucked then any movie ever could be.
 
i attended landmark forum when i was younger and it gave off massively culty vibes.

by chance, i met an arab kid i knew there and was almost relieved to find him just as spooked by the vibe. i say "almost" because it's not a happy feeling looking down at the street from the 20th floor in a rented office space having just found a kindred spirit who also feels like a hostage in a room full of potentially brainwashed cultists.

lunch there was cold cuts with juice, btw

Weird. That popped up after I finished reading about the Ant Hill Kids.

Some say it destroyed their lives, other say it made everything better .. but I have my doubts…
Did you stay for one weekend ?
 
I knew a girl who was totally into Hubbard. She wasn't a member of Scientology, though. But said she found a lot of wisdom in Hubbard's books and they helped get through a hard episode in her life.

Except the German red army faction actually where founded in the realities of the day. The united red army faction in Japan however where very cultish and killed their own members and then all died in a shotout with the police.
 
A new friend of my mom and her partner's became my neighbor. She's very religious, not sure which denomination. But she was constantly trying to drag all other neighbors to the events those people held. A lot of praising the Lord and Jesus, and people telling how bad their lives were before they joined those people.
The one event I went to was held in a 5* hotel and the preachers - a couple - started off by telling everyone how successful they were during their trip to Miami. With photos to undermine it. Apparently they got enough new "believers" to get more founding for whatever it was they needed/wanted (probably another vacation).
Thing is, they said now everyone has to donate whatever, for the ones in need (there was a family who told a sad story).

Next meeting was a smaller one, held in the event room of our condo. This time the neighbor said we should each give at least 10000 pesos (like 10 USD) because it was such a small event and the preacher's had to come all the way from Santiago just to pray for us all.

I was just curious about all that, it never hurts to listen and watch, but the neighbor never invited me again to another event.

One other neighbor, a young guy with mental health and drug problems who had inherited an apartment from his uncle was "helped" by this woman and her "church" in exchange for the inherited apartment.

i can't remember, i think it was just for one day. it didn't feel that different from a corporate seminar, but instead of multiple speakers we were just getting worked for the full day by a smooth talking spook wannabe with a chiseled jaw and faked candour

Yeahhh that was a recruitment. In my opinion.
Flaunting life style, wealth, asking for serious donations, 5 star hotel… they wanted money like you said.
Sob stories that likely weren’t real.
You weren’t invited back because you didn’t check off all the boxes.
So you weren’t wanted again.

And then exchange of favours /goods (a condo). Righhttt. Not fishy at all
 
I saw a documentary about a cult called The Source Family from back in the 70s The movie is called The Source Family and was released in 2012, they use interviews, photos, film, and music from various cult members.
I don't remember a lot of details, I think it was started by an older square salesman type guy who had a midlife crisis and started calling himself Father Yod and brought spiritual wisdom to younger hippie types. And of course it turned into a lot of manipulation and a sex cult. I thought it was really fascinating. I think you can see it through Amazon or YouTube, I'm not sure.

landmark was like that, appealing to rogues and miscreants.

cults in general feel like they're looking to the rejects of society as a fertile pond to fish in, nobody else has time of day for long brainwashing sessions
