Trigger Warning Anything about cults and such

I saw a documentary about a cult called The Source Family from back in the 70s The movie is called The Source Family and was released in 2012, they use interviews, photos, film, and music from various cult members.
I don't remember a lot of details, I think it was started by an older square salesman type guy who had a midlife crisis and started calling himself Father Yod and brought spiritual wisdom to younger hippie types. And of course it turned into a lot of manipulation and a sex cult. I thought it was really fascinating. I think you can see it through Amazon or YouTube, I'm not sure.

No, Rajneesh was another bigger cult. Very interesting story with them, too You could tell who they were because they always dressed in shades of red. I used to see them around when I moved to SF. But they got in big legal trouble and crashed and burned. Basically, they bought a bunch of land up in redneck Oregon and tried to take over the county. At some point I think they poisoned people in the county. They are really worth reading about IMHO

They built their own ‘town’ and basically fucked a lot. Had a pretty good time as far as I understand ( if I remember correctly)
The Yod took a shiton of mushrooms and did some crazy shit.. and yeah. I’ll stop there. But I agree with chipper. Check it out!

Yeah Yod was a bit of goofball. He had a good thing going for awhile. His finale in the hang glider was kind of pathetically funny

I gotta be honest, I might have joined the Rajneesh myself if the opportunity had arisen. But I probably didn't have enough money to help pay for another of his Mercedes
 
There was another cult called The Children of God aka The Family International. I think they may still be around. I don't know much about them except they were real creeps , the one time I met them.
Then there were the Hare Krishnas. I did electrical work on their temple once long ago, hooked up a grow light for their holy bush. They were culty, sent members out to beg and recruit. I didn't hate them but it always felt like they had been vulnerable hippy types trying to get over drug problems and stuff. But they had some really good cheap vegetarian Indian restaurants. Yum! I don't know if they are still around. Y'all probably have seen them, they were a big deal at one time
 
When I was in highschool I had a classmate who was an "aspiring recruit" for a right extremist group. That was in Germany at a time where such groups were illegal, and they worked under the cover of being a historical foundation of some sort.
I met this guy later, and he remembered how everyone made fun of him because he was in that group. But he also said it gave him a sense of belonging, which he didn't get from his family.
 
They were kind of a westernized pseudo- Hindu religion. I'm not really sure how much they were really in keeping with Indian Hindus. I guess I should read about them. Yeah, we always made fun of them

Thanks. I wanted to make this one a long time ago, but you how things go.

And I enjoy the joking in the Lounge, and there were fun new threads. But sometimes I feel like having more serious topics. And then I felt the same: all politics where people jump at each other as if that would change anything.
 
We can start our own cult! The Order of the Eternal Blue Flame! We'll divvy up the goodies we get from our followers.
Actually, I just realized I stole that name from my brothers and sister. They would light their farts with matches to initiate themselves into what they called the Order of the Blue Flame. ( beer was involved ) I guess they won't mind if we steal their name and their sacred rituals
