Any "happy" opiate addicts out there?

well, I agreed w/him in the sense that; when I'm using, I'm always thinking, "man, I should be getting clean....I'm gonna get arrested or OD again".....

but when I'm clean, I always think: "man......what I wouldn't give for a FAT shot of dope right now....".....there's always that tradeoff.....

overall, I'm a pretty cheerful dude though....

The crux of the matter lies in motivation, as someone before hinted at. My current use is not problematic right now. I function fine... no one close to me even knows I use (that, I admit is hard, the secrecy). Things just haven't gotten bad enough to spur me on to quit, BUT once they get bad enough to make me quit, I may have lost many of the things in my life that make me happy. I don't know... I try not think about it too much... like it's something on my "to do" list that I am loathing. I know I can kick, my habit isn't that bad, and I have been through much worse physical and psychological pain in my life (maybe my reason for starting to use in the first place), but I just keep pushing the "confrontation" further away. I am sure there are others who know what I'm talking about. This is the most I have ever written in a thread, so let me say this: I know my case is mild, it's nothing special, but I appreciate the opportunity to articulate my thoughts. If I were to get any more personal I's start a journal, but I can't stand those things (unless they're humorous). Later.

I'm very happy and content with my use. I have a steady job, and have had it during the total duration of my use. I have a couple of side businesses that I run that provide me with some extra $$ each month. And above all else, I feel a contentment with life as a whole.

The constipation is what irks me, but by now I view it as more of an inconvienience. I get through it fine, albeit sometimes with the help of a warm water enema.

I'm an opiate addict I think. I defintely have problems cutting down sometimes, but I have never let things interfere with my schoolwork.
I'm fairly happy, and I'm an addict. So...yes, there are some happy and content opiate addicts out there.

edit: Someone else mentioned something about how if you expect to be happy all of the time, you're not accepting reality (or something along those lines). I've come to accept this a long long time ago (well not that long ago I'm only 22). So I don't expect things to always go my way, and the things I wish I were better at I don't let get to me as much as I used to.
I think it's all about each person's ability to accept life and reality, and deal with the fact that the human condition is not one of constant happiness. Then again like I said I am able to get off the stuff fairly often to lower the tolerance and start again a few weeks/months later, I enjoy sobriety as much as I enjoy being on opiates, I think I just need constant change from the routine to keep my life feeling like it's going somewhere. Hopefully that makes some sense.

You're completely right Propynyl, the legality of heroin is really what causes the problems. If we could always get hold of the drug, the sterile equipment to use it and be on the receiving end of less stigma associated with using we'd be at hardly any risk of homelessness, arrest and isolation.

If heroin was viewed in the same way as an addiction to cigarettes, with fewer health risks involved, then life as an opiate addict would be infinitely easier.

I'd say yes, If I have a steady stream of opioides going down my gullet I'm the happiest guy in the world. My outlook on life is great, i'm sociable, motivated etc. The only problem is while i'm on drugs I feel this way but I tend to let it get out of hand like spending money I should be spending on food ,on drugs. And if for some reason my drug supply runs out, then my life turns to hell. I've had all my friends and family do an intervention and put me in rehab for 28 days and after detoxing and kinda getting over the drugs I felt great, but then I relapsed and started the horrible fucking cycle again. So Im thinking if you use opioides recreationally, as in occasionally your much better of than if you're using daily. I really wish I never tried opioides cause sobriety just doesn't compare to that warm blanket of opiate euphoria.

well for someone like me with chronic pain and a debilitating and degenerative illness, narcotics are the only thing that keep me "in" life. if it weren't for my daily meds i wouldn't be able to do anything much except be miserable and contemplate suicide. someone said that being happy all the time is delusional, and that is so true. no one can be happy always, but i am happy with my narcotic useage.... except when i run out a day early of course.

But that dosent make sense.

IF you could be provided with those things, then nearly everyone would be an addict, and dont dare tell me thats a good thing.

I guess the issues would be the mental anguish cuased by the fact that you know you are dependent on foreign substance to make it through the day.

Wow, that's kind of a loaded question. I take some form of opiate pretty much every day. Am I DEPENDENT on it to make it through my day? Hell no. I'm enjoy my life a LOT. In addition to having a secure, reliable source, I'm very successful (Great career, sweet ride, big house, etc.), I have everything I've ever dreamed of, and every day it just gets better.

A lot of people think that opiates are used to make a bad life better. And I'm sure there are a fair share of cases where that's true. But in my case, I use opiates to make a GREAT life better.

I kind of liken it to, when you're at a party - People are generally pretty happy. Hanging out with friends, shooting the shit, etc. Are they drinking/smoking out because they're not having a good time? Because they're trying to find some way to make it through the party? No. They're looking for a way to make the party even BETTER. And that's the way I look at opiates.

Every once in a while I stop for a week or two just to make sure I'm able to, etc. But as long as it's providing me with discernable benefits, and few if any negative side-effects, I'm sticking with it.

(And I was "dependent on a foreign substance to make it through the day" before I even heard of opiates. It's called caffeine, and I have my doubts as to whether or not I could have made it through my day with out it. :) )

I used to be addicted to oxycontin and methadone for a long time, then switching to suboxone.

The first few months were great. A highlight of my life, because I felt great, I didn't mind work, I was happy most of the time. The only bad things at first was, it cost a good bit of money and if I didn't get it, i would be sick.

Then I started getting depression when I did opiates. I don't know if it was the antagonists in methadone and suboxone or what, but damn, I got very fucking depressed. I was so sad, and more opiates would make it worse.

So I quit eventually, relapsed then quit again.

I was a happy opiate addict for a few months of the game. Then things went down the shitter.

I'm content with my life, living with a dependency on methadone. I'm not a "shiny happy person" but I'm not "just getting by" either. There are plenty of things that I enjoy other than drugs/opioids. I'm married, we both are working, we live together...everything is in hand. So I ain't got nothing to really comlain about. When I decide to quit something (which I have so many times) I get angry with life and start complaining and shit but it passes when all is said and done.

I hear ya, K'd, when I said I was "just getting by", I really meant that in the sense that I am just getting by with my use... that it could, potentially, turn into a real problem. I feel I have a good grip on it (for now), my doses do not go up weekly or monthly, I just live with the fear that one day it's going to bite me in the ass (reading all of the horror stories on BL). I don't want to give the impression of whining about "what if." I'm just voicing concern, but, shit, my life is good right now. I just got caught up in quasi-philosophical pontifications. I'm done. Sorry for the annoyance.

im actually surprised at the amount of peeps that say they dunno if they'd be happy even with an unlimited supply of opiods..these are opiod addicts too, which kinda stuns me..the BIGGEST reason most addicts are unhappy is because the SUPPLY isnt up to par, thus they are chasing the stuff down and spending lotsa time doing it, thus they are unhappy/dopesick etc etc..

i can only share my experiences..i had 3-4 pretty good sources for NUBAIN, and i had money, so i would definitely say i was MORE THAN HAPPY..in fact, that 3 year stretch i was addicted to NUBAIN was right there as best times of my life..other things may contribute to that title, but the BAIn was the biggest reason...after the BAIN, i started on my OXYCONTIn addiction..again, i had 2 good sources and i had money, so i NEVER ever had to worry about running out..during the 2 year span of addiction i ran out ONCE, and that was for maybe 10 hours..not too bad imo, the BLISS of everyday binging was more than enuff to make up for it..ive heard som e mention that they are miserable while hooked, i wasnt...i was not as social on the drugs as i had been prior BUT that was a PLUS to me..i have always been the restless/stimulation type guy, and this led me to be kinda bored overall with life before drugs..when opiods came, wham bam than ya sir..

u give me a unlimited supply of NUBAIN or OXY, and i will be HAPPY..trust me on that..as for knowing i am hooked on a drug that i need daily to get thru the day, SO WHAT??as long as you have the drug in plentiful supply, whats the problem??just like water/sleep, ya need, dont have it, ya die ;)

Everybody is dependent on foreign substances to make it through the day. It's just a matter of what substance it is. For some people it's opiates, for some people it's money. We all need something to get by.

especially true of our culture (Americans). As Howard Zinn said, "A nation addicted to war." ... the WAR on drugs, the WAR on poverty, the WAR on obesity.... it never ends.

i'm an addict on bupe and yes, i am happy, although it may be the bupe or the relief of the hectic heroin abusing lifestyle, either or, I am happy.
