No it's not the right thing to do, you would rape the rapist, and then that would be more just.

Nonetheless, is there a right thing to do in this situation? Maybe not; there may only be a least wrong thing to do.

1) Very few people commit a capital crime thinking that they're going to get caught. It's almost always a heat of the moment thing. This is why the deterrent argument is pure bullshit.

2)Executions are much, MUCH, more expensive than jailing a criminal for life. Yet cost effectiveness still seems to be the most popular argument for pro-death dumbasses. "Ah dun wanna pay mah taxes ter feed dem fer life hurhurhur" Mind boggling.

3) "You killed, and killing is bad, so we gonna kill you" wat? Missing logic circuitry there.

4) The emotional plea. "Well, you'd change your mind about the death penalty if it was YOUR family that was killed" As if a man who's family was recently murdered is the best arbiter of rational punishment.
 
I think a good alternative to the death penalty would be life in prison in solitary confinement. In a first degree murder conviction the judge has the option of life without parole in a normal prison or life without parole n solitary confinement which means 23 hours in a cell. To me spending 23 hours a day by yourself would be alot worse then the death penalty.
 
^what is the point of torturing them? we've established that it's not going to be a deterrent in these sort of crimes...
 
Isnt that what our justice system is about? Its not about rehabilitation so its got to be about pnishment which is interchangable with torture? I dont agree with the death penalty and I think our prisons are horrible and backward but I dont have faith that Americans will ever see criminals as anything but numbers they not people with familys or dreams they are just numbers. BTW people on death row are kept in solitary for 23 hours a day(in alabama) so it would be the same as now without us killing them. I guess I just realize that I live in a backwards vindictive country so I try and think about soutions in those confines.
 
but you yourself, recognizing all of this, also would prefer to keep them in solitary confinement?
 
No not at all if I was dictator of the country I would come up with a totally different system that utalized community based programs and try and adress the socio economic reasons for crime. I guess I was trying to make a suggestion that might work within the framework of our current political climate and cultural additudes. Its like I think all drugs should be legalized but I think harm reduction and treatment is a ,ore realistic goal to work towards.
