We were having some lunch at a shopping centre/mall when I had a somewhat interesting conversation with a random sitting at a table next to us. The setting, it was myself, my wife and our 13 month old daughter sitting at a table. At the table next to us was a guy and his Phillipine wife. We got talking due to Cassie just being oh so cute (as usual) and the couple were commenting on how Cassie looked so cute and how she really looked like her daddy (yup, me heh).

Anyway, the guy mentioned how he was 70 (looked AWESOME for his age!) and that he had lived in Stawell for a few years. Then just 'casually' mentioned how he loves living 'in the bush', the healthy air, the secludeness etc. Then he said quote "I also grew tryptamines, bit illegal, the cops would lock you up if you got found out, but it's good stuff, really like it" during the conversation. I didn't expect a nice mild mannered 70 year old guy to mention that during a normal conversation centered about our 13 month old daughter heh.

I just nodded and agreed, it really didn't sink in. Emma then mentioned to me after they left, probably 10ish minutes later "Did you hear what he said?" We then had a good chuckle about the tryptamine story and went about our day. Anyone else have somewhat unexpected stories like that, hopefully on topic so it stays in AusDD. Good to see how 70 year old people can talk about drugs with such warmth and a grin as this guy did :) I have a feeling I will still be looking back on my interaction with stuff throughout my life. Rock on dude, his love of life was something to be admired considering his age, then again, anyone of any age should have the love of life that he sounded like he did, 'twas the awesome, we had a great talk :)

Hey waz, perhaps you should - just for safety's sake, not drop the names of your family bro. I know you're not up to anything you need to be hiding - but you never know what kind of freak is reading this - well actually you probably do. ;)

p.s: cassie is cute, and god damn does she look a lot like you. I thought she'd look more like Em, but seems your genes are the ones shinin' on through. :)

I'm always a bit thrown when people unexpectedly talk about drugs in casual conversation. A couple years ago I was having coffee with a few surgical registrars at the hospital I was at and one of them starts talking about how their friend's mum used to make them all sorts of food with cannabutter when they were younger. Then another mentions that datura grows in the botanic gardens and that he's always been interested to try lsd.

Just shows, you never know who ;)

Sometimes it's surprising ... but I suppose at some point you have the feeling that the statute of limitations has passed and you can freely speak about these things to any random in a shopping centre food court ... ;)

great reading, some times its hard to catch on instantly.. but of all things, not a huge amount of the aussie population knows about tryptamines, in particular 70 year olds. good fella.

I once hung out with an old (well he looked 70, was probably a lot younger..) homeless person while on a 4-MAR comedown just out of boredom. They share their goon and everything, and all the aboriginal homeless have their own mugs and I didnt have one so they let me borrow one, they were quite nice people (then the aboriginals decided to go into a local pub to try and steal purses)

But this old bum was cool to talk to, he was talking about the 60's. How he knew someone in Sydney University making a lot of psychedelic drugs, not just LSD. DOM, DMT, Synthetic mushrooms. He knew all the chemical names it was quite odd.

Just shows what may happen if you keep tripping and getting fucked up though.

He told me he was arrested in the 70s from taking some unknown tablet that was supposed to be "Hug" (which he told me was MDA), it turned out later to be found to be pharmecutical methedrine mixed with a high dose of DOM. He was treated badly in the psych ward but that trip kept on repeating ev ery time he would try acid or any drug, even weed.

So he told me he had to keep drinking or all his doors would be open for inspection by the "knowers"

Bit of a sad story but it seemed like he used to have some brains and not just eating random drugs (besides the dodgy MDA pill)

Sounds psychotic. My understanding is that the current view is psychs/cannabis don't cause schizophrenia but can manifest it earlier in predisposed individuals, is this right?

Always sad to hear about people with potential losing it, be it from drugs or otherwise :(

For peiople that experiment with drugs in their teens and early 20s, if they have some predisposed mental condition, drugs will sooner or later bring it out. But long term drug psychosis is real. It is not schizophrenia but it may as well be, tripping and taking pills, coming down, weed for years and years is basically just reprogramming your brain and memory.

It could take a long time to come back to who you once were, which brings on a different point, people are usually starting to find out who they really are around this age and the delusions from psychedelics and what not are definitely going to cloud and shape who you are.

Its a case of taking the blue or red pill?

Good point. Tbh I'm glad I didn't get into drugs earlier than I did, scares the crap out of me thinking what might've happened :\

I had a cool conversation with an elderly man whilst waiting for a bus transfer in a small rural town the other month, he noticed my pinhole pupils (lol me still on methadone, but now iv meth+ritalin rather than opiates-im not the only one heh..)

He almost looked like william s burroughs haha!? started talking about heroin and how he was addicted to it in the late 60s and was just fascinating, respected him immediately! then he started talking about quaaludes and other wierd drugs he had tried 'back in the day', i just wanted to talk to him all night but was time to change buses.

A cool stranger id never forget! All I could think about on the bus was banging heroin? haha but yeah was inspiring besides all the other interesting chats ive had at 'raves-back in he day'.

At "an event" this year I met an old guy, looked about 50. He was telling me on the first night of the doof he bought himself 4 Cookie Monster tabs and then shortly after spilled beer on them. Naturally his reaction was "Fuck! Eat 'em all quick before they're ruined!" He was a real tripper.

The truth is, no one has a damn clue. Of course, plenty of people are willing to pretend they do.

I think that they have a bit more then that to create hypotheses from.

It's controversial. They don't necessarily cause schizophrenia but they certainly have the potential to cause psychosis, even in mentally healthy people. If you have a latent mental condition there is no doubt in my mind it can bring that out, and I have experienced a psychosis brought on by LSD myself though I did have an underlying condition.

On topic: I love meeting people with interesting stories, not just about drugs but anything. There are a lot of bullshitters out there of course, and plenty of people with huge egos but there are genuine people I've met who had some pretty interesting histories and who were happy to share their knowledge and information.

Hopefully one day all us BL'ers will all be like that. :)

Like my work mate who said he had a few lines of whip to get going after a dozen beers

And when I didn't seem all that amazed he added he then had TWENTY md caps.

I ate them both and said "Whatchya gonna do now Morphius?"
