Hey all, so in my lecture last night the lecturer said amphetamines increase the reuptake up dopamine and cocaine makes the dopamine sit on the receptors for longer. So would one potanate the other and the are the chances of harm? Cheers

Cocaine blocks the reuptake of dopamine, it competes with amphetamine for the same transporter(s) and actually ends up counteracting the release of monoamines caused by amphetamine.

Amphetamines do not cause increased re-uptake - they cause reversal of reuptake. Hence they are refered to as "releasing agents" reather than "reuptake inhibitors".

Samr thing with MDMA (releasing agent) and SSRIs. The SSRIs occupy the 5-HT transporter and prevent MDMA from causing release.

Did this once and had a hell of a crash. Mixing stimulants is not a good idea.

Potentiation occurs when you take something that increases the levels of another drug you've taken by competing for the same enzymes that metabolize them or similar processes. Amphetamines do NOT potentiate cocaine and I believe sekio did an excellent job explaining why so I'm going to close this. Feel free to Private Message me if you have any questions.
