It's always some douchebag that lives thousands of miles away talking shit about stuff they know nothing about. Usually from Australia.
 
A year ago I had 3 American friends that I drove down to see quarterly. Now we're no longer friends, all because of ideology. People down there have politicized every facet of life. You can't even buy food without thinking about whether your choice is liberal or conservative. As a Canadian, it's easy for me to walk into a mine field with these people because Canada isn't as all-consumed by politics. Added to that, I'm a centrist, so to the conservatives I'm a radical leftist and to the liberals I'm a radical rightist. There's no winning.

I'm so glad to live north of the border. Every time I drive back into Canada I breathe a sigh of relief. I don't care that our dollar is suffering right now. It's so passive up here that it's boring, and after visiting the trash heaps of Seattle and Portland last year, I'll take boring any time.

there's no federal (or state) minimum for vacation days in the u.s.

here, within in the first couple of years of employment with a company, 10 days vacation is not unusual. how much would you (one) travel if you only had 10 days vacation?

this isn't a defence. its evidence that americans fucking suck. like seriously your employment laws are fucked and there's 350 million of you so one of you could have done something about it by now. if i got 10 days per year i'd be starting a violent rebellion.
 
^ i'm not saying it's right or wrong. i'm saying it's an institutional reason why a lot of americans don't travel (which some europeans like to suggest is caused by small-mindedness, laziness, etc.).

aside, i think that 70% figure is bogus. according to the u.s. state department, in 2018 there were 137.6M valid u.s. passports in circulation. if you just divide that crudely by the population of u.s .citizens, the number is closer to 58%.

Yeah, I'm not sure 10 days a year of paid holiday is a deterrent to more widely travelling. In Canada 10 days paid holiday is pretty standard in almost every province and we get around like STDs.
