All men play on 10 (METAL THREAD 3.0)

Anyone ever checked out Scar Symmetry? How did I miss these guys before?

They combine death metal and power metal so amazingly well, you'd think these guys invented a new genre instead of mish-mashing two different ones together. It's basically Gothenburg melodic death with a commercial edge -- a bit like Soilwork, but these guys are so beyond Soilwork in songwriting quality and musicianship it's insane. The singer goes from almost Dying Fetus like grind growls to effortless melodic vocals that sometimes reach Blind Guardian levels in range and ability. I can't believe the guitar tone that the lead guitars get during the solos, too, these guys can fucking shred.

And I'm seeing them live! They're touring America with Dark Tranquillity, Into Eternity, and The Haunted.

Best...lineup...evar.

i will check this out just because ive loved every band uve reccomended in this forum. however, as an old school death metal fan from the black void beyond, i must say that i despise mixing death metal with any kind of music. imo it does not and CAN NOT work. its like mixing neon markers with oil pastels. i hope to be proven wrong...

[edit]

ew dear lord... the first track is a symphonic power chordy track...I could tab this out in my sleep. while i LOVE the guys vocals itd sound infinitely better over some real death metal. i cant call this music death metal. it is (death metal) more than just the vocals to me, its the whole persona of the music. the style, while perhaps compositionally more intelligent than most of the popular metal sounds these days, is very far from death IMO. This is like if konkrah mixed with a power metal vocalist and started writing songs for in flames.

They sound veeeeeeeeery much like dark tranquility to me. this band isnt bad but reminds me more of like newer nevermore or something of that nature. maybe even (dare i say) a hint of fear factory. it just sounds like simple power chords, some trendy double bass and downtuned single-string guitar plucking parts, and that hideiously happy-go-lucky feeling that comes along with melodic power chords. hahaha na really tho the 1-2-3-4 powerchords are driving me nuts. this band would be way better if they just stuck with the clean vocals, he sounds really good on the pipes there too (unless its 2 vocalists...). Death metal should sound like a herd of mastodon running at full speed across the siberian countryside, not the closing credits to The Neverending Story.

my death metal test of truth: block the vocals out, pretend they dont exist. then think, how would I categorize this music?

jeeeeeesta' opinion...

I just got into these guys about a month ago. For some reason I had them confused (maybe the name?) with a shitty metalcore band. Then I checked them out, and yes, they are quite good.

And to Wood's comment, I do think Scar Symmetry sound like Dark Tranquility, but I mean that in as good a way as possible. Both great bands.

Also on the "good Euro metal bands that somehow slipped by me" list: Detonation. Found them around the same time I found Scar Symmetry. Their album Portals to Uphobia is great. It really takes a lot to stand out when you are a Euro melodic death band, because both of these bands rule and aren't exactly setting the world on fire. Either way...enjoy!

holy shit, that's funny...anyone search their name for other parodies?

I just laughed out loud at their Pantera - Five Minutes Alone parody...some funny ass-shit.

It's especially great because some of Phil's lyrics on that track are definitely hard to decipher as it is.

hahaha, that was the funniest thing I've seen in awhile! thanks for the share.

I just ran across the most metal lyrics of all time:

Nile - "Masturbating The War God"

Evil sick flames cast uncertain shadows in the dimly lit Temple of
Anhur as we count the dead and vanquished by hacking off their
phalluses and piling the severed hands before the living stone
image of God.
(holy shit did you read that?!)

The shamed and humbled women of the subjugated kneel in hopeless
Aquiescence as we grasp them by the hair and force them to serve
our father Anhur.

Yea we impale them on the massive stone member of the Ithyphallic
War God until the backs of their throats are torn out and their
bowels are ripped apart.

One by one we force the female captives to serve the Ahati until
the Gods legs are awash with blood and his phallus drips with
red and black gore Un snem sheth tesher mekhsefu parthal m aba
neth Anhur.

We lay our bloodstained weapons of Iron on the altar of Anhur and
His Seed blesses us with strength to slay our enemies Like as unto
Menthu we have become Ithyphallic.

The mighty Sekhmet is with us.

I've decided that Nile are the most brutal, insane, and pure metal of any band in the history of existence, period. These guys aren't playing games -- I swear the band is made up of reincarnated egyptian gods or something. After listening to Annihilation Of The Wicked all the way through, man, I'm thinking no one can top this shit.

By the way, the songs on Scar Symmetry's MySpace page are possibly their most simplistic. I'm listening to this crazy seven minute epic right now from their new album called "The Kaleidoscope God" -- the guitarwork here is fucking insane, the solo section sounds like old-school Mercyful Fate, Pretty Maids, Impellitteri, or Yngwie Malmsteen, i.e. crazy eighties keyboard-tinged metal with shredding (and then some Dying Fetus style growls thrown in for good measure). They vary a lot from track to track.

I just tend to like this mish-mash of styles -- I can see how some people would find it distasteful. I also like Into Eternity, if you can see where I'm coming from here.

sounds like the holy bible, somewhere between judges and kings...

and ill second nile. i have a problem wiht proclaiming any artist to be a favorite but nile leaves me thinking "wow" every time i listen to them. every aspect, the lyrics, atmosphere, the intensity, the calmness, the power; its majestic fucking metal. Check out Unas Slayer of the Gods from "In Their Darkened Shrines" if you doubt this testament. Epic story, exceptional metal.

SHMAAAAASHHHHING THE ANTIUUUUUUU

last time i was getting ink done this guy i used to work for was there and he was a metal drummer (thrash/power) for about 15 years, very successful local band. We had on "Annihilation of the Wicked" and the said drummer just sat there laughing to himself while the first track played out, thinking no human being could possibly do that (in jest of course). Anyone who is knowledgeable of music has to be impressed by this bands work.

and yea i figured u cant judge a band by 4 songs (scar symmetry) and id iddnt wanan come off saying they were bad.

I think I may hit that tour up when it is in NYC. Nice lineup is right.

Tha Haunted are great live, but damn if Peter Dolving isn't single-handedly ruining this great band. We get it Pete, you like to sing, you like cowboy hats. But you guys are a fucking thrash band! A slow song and some clean vocals are cool here and there, but not EVERY OTHER SONG!:(

I stopped following The Haunted after The Haunted Made Me Do It. I'm WAY out of the loop on these guys. As long as they play their good old stuff live I'm satisfied. I'm mostly going for the other bands on the bill.

One Kill Wonder was awesome too. The two albums since then....eck.:|

Into Eternity is great as well. Just thought I'd throw that in.

The Haunted s/t = How thrash metal should sound.

Does anyone have the lyrics to 'Human Waste' by Suffocation from their first EP? Someone stole my copy and I need a copy of the lyrics, but we can't seem to find them. I've looked at heaps of internet sites, like Dark Lyrics.com, nothing comes up. If someone could check their cd and maybe send 'em to me, well that'd be great. Thanks.

^ hah yeah man i was about to post darkyrics.com, pretty much where i go anytime i quote anything. i actually dont have that ep sorry. Effigy is where my suffocation discog starts, always has been in my top 10 or so death metal albums, instant classic. seething with innovation and definitive style. The vocals on that album are some of the best (beast!) in death metal.

actually, i have a small poster of the cover of that album on my wall right next to my computer monitor. some dude drew a huge swastika on my original cassette tape about 10 years ago or something nuts, and i blacked it out with a magic marker ruining the cover.

Sittin here listening to the latest stuff from my favorite whipping boys in Dimmu Borgir... thought I'd re amp the metal thread with my initial impressions. Basically it manages to be less boring than the death cult thing, the biggest difference being more aggressive guitars this time around and slightly more interesting composition in a few parts. I understand Hellhammer is prostituting himself out to them these days, I cant see much difference between him and the last dude as far as the band's sound goes. I guess the punchline is that this is a great album skim through once for the 2-3 cool sounding riffs and then forget about for the rest of your life. Mazel Tof!

I'm going to start a new metal thread. I don't care if this one already exists, it's too damn long and unspecific. (just so you know, and don't criticize it)

Wow. That deserves some sort of just punishment. Not only did he ruin your album but....yeah, you know.

I got the lyrics btw.

theres a new dimmu? ive all but forgotten them since death cult. The Insight and the Catharsis, Kings of the Carnival Creation, and Moonchild Domain remain amongst some of my favorite metal tunes out there, so ill have to get this for sure. sux might be like 10+ days till i have proper internet access to download anything.

that looks liek it. cover artwork allready looks like a lame attempt to pull off hte "YEAAH WERE EEEEVIL PURE EVIL LISTEN TO USS!!!!"

i love the artwork (allthough perhaps not the content) from the older albums, especially Enthrone Dark Triumph and Spiritual Black Dimen. I thought the artwork on Puritanical Euph Misan was pretty cool, especially all the photomanip'd band shots. Death Cult Armg was ok but not as cool. Im a sucker for good visual arts.

Dave McKean made a lot of really good art for metal albums....check em out G's! http://www.dreamline.nu/cdcovers/?view=bucketheadmonstersandrobots

Anyone here a Testament fan? I love them - this Chinese metalhead guy gave me some DVD's, including their full discography (in 320 kbs!!). Right now first checking out Demonic... it's a death metal album, so it's not "classic" Testament. in fact, I recently read an interview with Gene Hoglan, who said while they were making it, the band was supposed to be called Dog Faced Gods, but at the end they just whipped it into "Testament." Kind of dumb...but Testament is like that, one of those endless corporation-type bands. (but I really love them)

Dimmu is like a caricature of candy black metal. Stormblåst is still great though.

Any into Enslaved? Its strange, I've been listening to black metal for years, but I never really got into them for some reason. Someone lent me a few of their earlier albums, and Isa, so lately I've been digging it. I like 'Frost', thats pretty good.

corporation type bands?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK?

I am going to let that slide cuz yer new. Testament is the best fucking band in the motherfucking business. Im baised since theyre probably either my favorite band or in my top 3, but fuck dude u know nothing about them to say something like that. Testament is abotu as anti-corporate as u can get just grab some lyrics and pay attention. Brilliant fucking band. Only band that has had guitar leads which have brought tears to my eyes with beauty. Testament motherfucking rocks. I used to have LOW as my avatar on here for years.

"Dog Faced Gods" is a song on the album Low as well.

Deamonic is **NOT** a deaht metal album. Its the same old testament classic style thrash sound with some grindy vocals. death metal has a lot more character than what that album presents. Also chuck billy uses the low baratone grindy vocals on many tracks on other albums, not just demonic. There are tracks with "clean" vocals on there as well (BUT JOOOOHN DOOOOE!!!! I BEEN HAUNTED BY HIS PAAAAAAAAAST!)

last time i saw them live (october 06) they said they were in the process of recording a few tracks for another album due out late 07. The Gathering is one of THE BEST METAL ALBUMS OF ALL TIME and i can not wait to see them try and out do that one. EXCELLENT band to see live btw, just as good on stage as in the studio.

the word "Testament" means telling a story for a moral meaning or purpose. Sort of like testifying your life to get your message across. Read into a lot of their lyrics, they have some really great stuff. And i mean it aint all about lyrical content, their music is infinitely badass.

only a band like testament could make hemp metal. and yah a lot of people say "almost all testament songs sound the same" maybe they do sound similiar, but love the way they sound! i hope all their new songs sound the same way too.

...Corporate America and its
Million dollar industries
Have too much power
that they stand to lose
too much fucking money
and theres nothing we can do
but take back all that we lost
at any price
at any cost
our freedom was worht fighting for
resistance now
or nevermore

the only enslaved song i have is called "Hordalendingen" and its totally badass. I really never got that much exposure to a lot of black metal i just know the more well known stuff on the surface. I have a few black metal sampler tapes that have a lot of single-songs by a lot of bands tho.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i got immortal on now. track 7 on sons of northern darkness, "In My Kingdom Cold." This song is pretty heavy, i love the breakdown at the end where hes like "AAAND HERE WE GO AGAIN..."

i only have this album and Damned in Black. i should probably get the rest of their cds.

Sorry but... the accusative rant is pretty retarded. Especially since I already said I loved Testament. The fact you didn't understand proves how much you know of the music business. Sure those guys play together and are amazing, but there's still expectations from the record companies as to their name, and they are known to produce a commercial sounding album once in a while.
