All men play on 10 (METAL THREAD 3.0)

^^Honestly, I saw Devildriver open for some other bands I was seeing, and they kicked ass live. They were definitely not false metal on stage. I haven't really listened to their albums, though.

Speaking of new albums that rule --

Fiction-1-.jpg

It's not out yet, but it has been leaked, and I've managed to hear most of it. It's fucking incredible. DT is basically perfecting the melodic death metal style without going too commercial (like In Flames or Soilwork). DT, instead of selling out and trying to appeal to mainstream audiences, has basically just done what they've always done, except each time around doing it better and better. I almost dare to say that Fiction might be their best album. It's got elements from their entire career, from beautiful piano parts to atmospheric keyboards, to the heaviest classic Swede-thrash riffs and even a couple clean vocals here and there (but only on a couple songs).

Dark Tranquillity is easily right now my favorite melodic death metal outfit. I used to be a big fan of In Flames, but they completely lost me. DT are metal, in the purest sense of the word. They fuckin' rule! I can't stop talking about 'em! It's so sad to see American bands get rich and famous off of the style that DT basically helped invent.

i gotta check out that new dt... ahh so much new metal to dig into! times are good.

and i only have devildriver's first album. its a joke.

just got the promo for Machine Head's new album The Blackening.

Very, very interesting stuff. Definitely MH's most "experimental" album to date. Gone are any sign of nu-metal tinges left from the listenable The Burning Red and the abortion that was Supercharger; this album takes what the band did on Through the Ashed of Empires and really expands on it. Some of the the heavy groove from the great Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change is also noticeable missing, but is replaced with, for lack of a better term, a more "mature" sound. This album seems to be more thrash based, and also delves into some interesting slower tempo stuff. This album has 2 nine + minute songs, and 2 10+ minute songs....this alone should tell you how different this album is.

I would advise everyone, including those who have given up on Machine Head for one reason or another, to give this one a spin.

Seeing these guys on Thursday with Lamb of God...very interested to see how this stuff hold up live and what kind of crowd response they get.

I've heard that's good, think I posted something about it a few pages back.

Dopethrone is indeed the album Wood, Electric Wizard the band. Heavy does'nt begin to describe it. See what I wrote about it, also a few pages back regarding said album and lovemaking ;)

BTW kinda off topic but Ministry are putting out a dub version of Rio Grande Blood, their latest one. Considering how fucking good that album is and how good dub can be, I'm looking forward to it.

I heard the one song that they actually released to the public ahead of time from The Blackening, and suffice to say it's pretty fucking insane. It sounds like Machine Head are going even further into thrash than Burn My Eyes did. I mean, really, these guys could compete now with the most technical of today's thrash/metalcore bands. It almost sounds like Vio-lence in a way (which was the band that both guitarists in Machine Head were in before Machine Head -- Vio-lence was a pretty technical Bay Area style thrash band with a weird vocalist).

sonOF, glad to hear some positive things about machine head. ill check it out. i gave up on them after the burning red, and i really love the more things change.

Come on people, where is the sludge/doom/whatever love on this board? No one has mentioned that Isis AND Jesu are doing a North American tour right now. Seriously guys... I'm seeing them in 2 weeks and I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. Also new Jesu is out, woot.

Saw the tour last week. As good as Isis is, they shouldn't be touring with two other bands that are sooo slow (Torche and Jesu). Show was a bit too low energy for me, and I love Isis. It was also a Wednesday night, the show dragged on until midnight, and I had work the next day, so that also soured the experience a bit for me.

Bring some stimulants or a mattress, you may need it.

On a side note, Isis' new stuff has so many elements of Tool it is almost annoying. I understand Tool is a big influence for them, but damn...

Heh, my bad. I was under the assumption that this was a metal thread, encompassing all subgenres of metal. That is pretty sad to hear about the Isis show, but I guess it doesn't surprise me. I have had a hard time digesting the new CD myself. I think they travelled too far into the realms of post rock. While I am a fan of the genre, I really liked Celestial-Oceanic sounding Isis.

Fuck yeah for Kataklysm!

too bad i dont have a larger pic to show, the artwork for this album is really rad:

Been listening to this all week. These guys are feggin crazy, they make Meshuggah look like credited psychiatrists. Excellent raw old school death metal, and breakdowns a'pleanty. I had 3 other cds of theirs (Epic, Temple of Knowledge, the prophecy) and I think this one is the best out of wht ive heard. This is def a wierd band, a lot of their stuff is like some nostradamus style prophecy about some mystical alter reality thousands of years from now.

"IN SHADOWS AND DUST" has always been my personal fave. by'em ;)

the entire Kataklysm discography is good (their new album, "In the Arms of Devastation" is great check it out). But I really prefer the older ones, like Mystical Gates, Sorcery, Prophecy, Epic, Temple of Knowledge... the production on them is terrible but the music has such a unique quality. The def have such a sound all their own on those albums. The newer ones, yeah its still distinctly Kataklysm but the style is a lot less technical, and they loose the epic feel they had on the old releases. The remasters are good yea, but id love to hear a completely new recording of their old albums cuz sometimes the terrible production ruins things. Great production on the new albums tho.

Course a lot of people in metal dont like good production so...

new napalm death is rockin. barney uses some really crazy harmonics (actually he used them on the last album too) to make his voice sound crazy warped on this cd. i prefer the good ol fashioned utopia banished style baratone screaming, but his voice on Smear Campaign sounds like hyperdimensional aliens straight from the chaos space warp. Musically its about on the same level as The Code is Red... Long Live the Code. I gotta listen to it a few more times.

Napalm-Death-Smear-Campaign-363676.jpg

reminds me a ton of their old school artwork, glad they went back to the old school logo too. I really diddnt like what they were doing with diatribes, inside the torn apart, and albums of the like (cover artwork that is).

+++++++++++++++

new dimmu!!!! damn! people can rip on them all they want. this album is fucking awesome and im only 3 tracks in. ill admit at first i hated the overly-corny synthesized orchestra in the beginning, that stuff was good on other albums but theyre relying on it too much. Also the clean vocals - same deal, it worked great on 1-3 tracks, but it better not become a dimmu motif.

overly produced? yeah. this album def spent a hell of a lot of time getting smoothed out wiht modern electronics. however the music itself is still totally badass. i wouldnt really lump this in with black metal anymore, dimmu is really straying from their genere of origination with each release. id more or less throw them in with like symphonic thrash or somethin. i mean id expect to see it in a black metal bin in a store or something, but its loosing its roots fast. anyways, if youve lost faith in dummu after their last cd (or probably even before that), at least give this album a listen. i doubt itd win the hatiest of haters back over, but its still a worthwhile listen once through.

++++++++++++++

so that Decapitated album, Organic Hallucinosis, im so glad i went and got ahold of that. Before i heard some bad reviews of it, and just never bothered getting it. I can see why some (extremely picky) ppl were saying they sold out cuz of the vocals, but I dig em. Id prefer death metal all the way through but I dig this guys (low end) screams too. Guitars have the thick energy leaking with juice that most death metal compression has nowadays, and the drums are just unbelievable. I love the real heavy bass amplified on the floor toms and this guy is one hell of a good drummer. This album reminds me a lot of a cross between Vader and Panzerchrist, except way better than anything either of those bands put out (allthough i think theyre great bands too). I can see this cd getting stuck on constant rotation for a while.

+++++++++++++

after one single listen, the new suffocation (Self titled) is excellent. i liek it a lot better than the last album. sorry SonOF, i must have missed ur post on it pages back.

New Napalm is better than coffee.

Oh yeah, why aren't we talking about Merciless Death?

Jesus Christ, this might be even more over-the-top retro 80's thrash than Municipal Waste. Fast all the time, Zetro-like vocals, sick Ed Repka art, a "hate list" to counter the thanks list (including "people who have Reeboks High Tops and shouldn't have them" and "the guitarists in Overkill... you were dicks! Fuck you!")...

I mean, this is a total binge of retarded thrash idiocy, and I fucking love it.

^ dude all i did was look at that album cover artwork, and i was like "SWEET! That looks totally like some late 80s quality thrash!!"

damn im good :p

what the heck is that innocent buxom beauty doing in a swamp full of zombies in the first place... good thing the darwin awards give us metalheads something cool to write songs about!

ima check that band out for sure.

on a side note,

NEW DYING FETUS KICKS TECTONIC PLATE DISRUPTIONS OF ASS!!

Its just as good as stop at nothing so far. Fetus is one of my all time favorite bands, i emplore every 'ead out there to check em out live; they are a phenominal live act. This cd is just perfect mosh music. These guys keep it simple but DAMN do they shred!! Real heavy triplet palm mutes, doube bass blasts, and machine gun snares all the way through. Excellent album. I even went and bought a shirt for it last night hah.

Yeah man I've missed Dying Fetus TWICE because of work <3

Also I just gave the Jesu-Conquerer and Swallow the Sun-Hope in depth listens. I am very unsatisfied with the new Jesu. I mean... it isn't BAD but it just isn't impacting like Silver or S/T. I really think it is the fact that the vocals are in the forefront of the mix this time. Gotta let it sink in more I guess. The new Swallow the Sun is pretty good and really reminds me of a more polished The Morning Never Came. A lot better than Ghost of Loss.

wow, this is a rarity..I found some black metal I REALLY enjoy. I found this album on a best of 2006 list and decided to check it...glad I did.

Melechesh - Emisaries

B000LC5B1A.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This album has the black metal vibe but also includes some really technical stuff (guitar work is particularly good), as well as good production. They also include a lot of Mesopotamian/Sumerian flavor; reminds me a bit of Nile (which is never a bad thing).

I am definitely checking out the rest of this band's catalog. edit: just found out these guys are from Jerusalem, Israel; interesting stuff.

Could anyone suggest any black metal for me with a similar sound? Probably my favorite black metal artists are Satyricon, Rotting Christ Enslaved, and now these guys.

Deathspell Omega. They're French. Some of their riffs and melodies are kinda unusual for black metal but work amazingly well. Think 'Rebel Extravaganza' era Satyricon. They have some albums with the middle eastern chanting, as well as other non-conventional BM elements. Start with the album 'Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice', particularly the song 'Jubilate Deo' which is one of my favourite songs, ever.

Antaeus are another French band who you should check out if you want some technical, mind-blowing BM. My favourite album from them is called 'Cut Your Flesh And Worship Satan.' Yep. The first track 'Inner War' is sick. All their albums are good, particularly the new one, 'Blood Libels.'

Here's a few more black metal bands for you:

Watain
Funeral Mist
Ondskapt
Katharsis
Oracle Of The Void : http://www.myspace.com/oracleofthevoid
Portal
Stargazer
Gospel Of The Horns
Drudkh

Please note that I did'nt list all the bands that usually appear in BM lists(Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, etc) because you've probably already heard them all and so I put stuff you might not have heard.
Enjoy.

And yeah, Melechesh are the shit.

yah i remember Liric i belie mentioning antaeus a while back, and i got two of their cds now (blood libel and a split ep with eternal majesty). excellent band.

deathspell omega sounds intruiguing. i love it when bands incorporate as much atypical elements as they possibly can and still pull off a solid, sensible, logical sound. mid eastern elements sound liek it would work well since the asymmetrical patterns and non-western time signatures would probably meld well into metal. ill be interested in sampling this.

thanks for contributing all those other bands cuz ur right, we all know the major BM bands. i personally never got that deep into black metal so all those bands are new to me, and are all getting tossed into the wishlist.

Awesome observation.

Yeah I dunno what it is but I always keep coming back to black metal. Love the stuff. Glad you like the list, I live to give haha.
