Slayer is touring with Unearth, I haven't heard anything about AFI.

Wood, I agree that Slayer has lost their edge. The last few times I have seen them they were outclassed by a younger, better band (Lamb of God, I forget who else). This wil happen again on this tour, as Unearth are hungry and get a great crowd response and Slayer are just going through the motions.
 
Any cradle fans here? There on tour with 69 eyes and Three inches of blood. Might go see them when they stop here early march, hope its a good show.
 
I remember seeing 3 Inches Of Blood back when they toured for their very first indie release. I swear this band would be killer if they dropped that useless screamer dude. Cam Pipes has plenty of voice to carry the band on his own, not to mention a built-in awesome metal vocalist name. The screamer, on the other hand, is near talentless. And, he looks like a friggin' baseball player. Definitely not metal.

That said, they've written a handful of great metal songs.
 
Someone just played me the opening track off the new Machine Head, sounds awesome. Maybe I'll check it out, even though I wrote them off long ago. Anyone else heard it?

Nah, not yet...

I wasn't even too pleased with their supposed comeback record Through The Ashes Of Empires. It still sounded kinda nu-metally, and "Imperium", the single, had a completely out of place Swede-thrash bit at the end, as if to say "Hey, we're real metal now, we can play like this again, buy our records". It just seemed like they were trying too hard. Hopefully the new record kills like it should.
 
I just saw Death Angel and Hirax play last weekend, HOLY FUCK do both of those bands still know to thrash hard.

I thought Through the Ashes of Empires was a nice return to form, but what do I know?
 
after listening to it about 20 times, id say the new kataklysm album (in the arms of devastation) is not nearly as good as previous releases. its still a kickass album but it has a lot of parts that just seem to be devoid of any real substance. lots of good slow chunky breakdowns and the character infantry-charge style drumrolls that kataklysm is known for. also i think they got a new vocalist, cuz this guy sort of screams at a low octave rather than does true death metal vocals. sounds ok, but i liked the old guy better (had lower voice). im still liking their old albums (got the remasters now!) a lot better than their last 2 releases but still a great band.

but i think nile has surpassed them as the chief mythological, lovecraftian gothic-horror death metal band.
 
Nile fucking rule. I'm seeing them soon in Sydney with Decapitated. Should be fun.

They reformed about 6-7 years ago for the Thrash of the Titans show in SF, that was the last time I'd seen them before last week. I know they put out a new album a year or two ago. They don't seem to play regularly though, thier appearances are definetly pretty sporadic. If you can catch them play I highly recommend it.

I saw Nile with Anthrax last year and while I'm not really into a lot of growly sorta death metal stuff, I was really f'in' impressed with Nile's drummer.

u might be thinking of dark angel, who to my knowledge is deceased (as a band)
 
If there was ONE metal album you would play for someone to give them some sort of understanding of the appeal of the genre what would it be?

I've never really understood metal... I love Primus, enjoy some of Tool's stuff (but I have been told neither of these bands are really metal...) So hook it up!

thats an excellent question psychedelic, and i personally think its one that cant be answered without fielding more than 1 album. id need at least 2 or three, preferably around 5 or so to show a progression of metal music over time. a listener will pick up not only on the evolution of styles and what not, but the fundamental traits that make metal what it is.


(i would probably pick) an old priest album (lets say british steel), either sepultura's schizophrenia or slayer's reign in blood (sonOFs Master of Puppets would work for this slot too), then probbaly a latter Death album, maybe some early morbid angel, and probably something real contemporary like a newer testament, pantera, or overkill release.

i dont think one album would cut it to introduce someone to metal. ud need to hear a few from a few different artists to pick up where the similarities and differences are.

i have Moonspell | Capricorn at Her Feet on my playlist atm, i could see tool/isis fans getting into this (since u mentioned tool). Moonspell isnt very good at all for measuring heavy metal tho.


if u want some random band suggestions, id say just look through this thread from the beginning, and also the first 2 metal threads (Which have 500+ posts in them). pleanty of info available on bands and styles, etc.

I definitely agree. Metal is too diverse to pick an album, regardless of the quality, that would "show them" the genre. I tried to pick two albums that are universally considered masterpieces in the metal community, but it's much harder than that.
