LH gald things are going well for you...and that AA is working for you.

I decided to join a Fri night softball league...so the last 2 Fridays have been sober for me. The earliest game is 6:30 which was last night's game...and I planned to stop by the store on my way home to get a bottle. One of the guys on the team didn't have the money to play the rest of the season so I used my bottle money to pay for his registration. I seriously looked in my wallet and saw the money, knew what I planned to use it for and made the decision to spend it on softball. I felt really good about it until I was laying awake at 11pm trying to fall asleep. But I did finally sleep...so still happy about my decision. One less bottle in my body.

We'll see where today takes us.

Good stuff Ryka. Just think what that bottle would have done to you?

You would have been happy for the night? Yeah.

You would have slept? Nope, no proper R.E.M cycles in your head if you knock yourself out with booze. On Thursday night it took me 'til 3am to fall asleep and I was tempted by the bottle of wine and half a bottle vodka I had stashed away.

Both bottles are still there, I slept like a log on Friday night and felt great this morning :D

Glad to see you're doing well Hosen! I did some brief research on Toastmaster, and apparently it is international... so I guess they are supposed to have the clubs in other countries, but who knows. Maybe they have a group or something similar to it in the UK. Glad to see those bottles were not drunk last night though! :)

Waking more clear headed (I'll likely never be a morning person though) and better utilizing my time are some clear benefits I'm getting from minimal to no alcohol these days. It is good because this is a period I really need to be on the ball about a few things.

I have posted in the old thread a few times, but have yet to post in here. Well, I'm still struggling but it is getting better.

I'm still drinking heavily on the weekends but am making an effort to keep it to that. I haven't gone more than two weeks without a drink since january. I haven't gone more than 3 weeks without getting drunk since I got my tonsils removed in May of 2006. Does anyone know roughly how long it is until my liver and organs will have sorted themselves out?

I have been a heavy drinker for a couple of years now but do have days off all the time. I rarely drink from the time I wake up until I pass out but it has happened before. I'm definatly a functioning addict as I'm a full time university student with a part time job...

anyway best of luck to all, I don't want to stop forever as I do enjoying drinking, but I want to be able to shut the during the week cravings down. :)

When you say you haven't gone more than two weeks without a drink, does that mean drinking everyday, or just at some point during the week you have a drink? Its very hard to tell how long it will take to get your liver/kidney functions back to "normal." If you are seriously worried about your liver and or kidneys because of pain or just genuine concern I would go get a blood test, renal and liver function test. Everyone is different and some people don't harm their liver as much as others, while others can have heart trouble instead of liver damage, etc.

I know it might be something hard to digest, but if you do have intense cravings for alcohol during the week when you aren't drinking, there is a chance that it might be hard to only be a social drinker on the weekends. I'm not saying its impossible and I am no expert, but often times people who are alcoholics and have intense cravings are better off not drinking at all as it could get out of control. Some people however can do it. Everyone is different.

Glad that you are doing better though! Looks like you are definitely making progress compared to your old habits. Hang in there myles, things will get better! :)

Still fucking drinking every day, not much but the problem is I am studying for the LSAT and the drinking is cutting into my homework time (after work). I've got too much money in this shit to fuck it up over drinking.

I have some good kava on the way, really going to just have to keep it too the weekends at this point (the drinking, I will use the Kava as needed at night. Its always helped me in these situations). Been tapering since sunday, probably going to jump off today or tomorrow. I am going to study over lunch today so when I get home I can devote myself to mindless tasks like mowing the lawn, cleaning the house and watching baseball. If I feel physically shitty later then I will go get a 24 or something. I currently have no alcohol in the house (well a few bottles of wine, but they aren't mine)

I will allow myself to drink on the weekends after I get a grip on myself. I have 4 hours of class every sat and sunday so I can't go too crazy.

Day 1 down - yesterday. Feel great today!
10 am - here is where I say everyday, ' not going to drink today'
How will I handle the 5 PM itch....

Lots of Luck and strength to both of you Phactor and WAAO......

Thanks, I'm feeling pretty positive about it. I need to take a break from the stuff.

This is the main thing standing in the way of me quitting drinking forever.
Anyone who thinks I'm joking, well, isn't Australian!

Its true in alot of countries, especially those with a culture based on Northern European tradition (this includes the US). Its also a based on family structure. Everyone I've grown up around drinks to various degrees. I can actually remember being shocked when a friends dad told me he doesn't drink. Not saying they are all alcoholics, not by a long shot. I just kinda feel like basically drank through the centuries like this. Its got its postives and negatives. It is very difficult for me to get sick when drinking.

Anyways its hard to get away from Alcohol, it is also difficult living in a city with a close to 20 percent unemployment rate. All there is to do is drink. Lots of people user harder stuff but most of my friends have aged out of that stuff for the most part.

electricbrain - Best of luck too you. I don't really know what to tell you, but I think your going to have to address the fact that you are still drinking with the professionals that work there.

Pretty proud of myself. I was able to keep it too two beers and only drank about half of the second one. I think today I'm going to try to go with 1 or nothing. I felt slightly physically shitty but not too bad. In my experience a taper is needed, but others use different methods.

I was able to mow the lawn, get a bunch of shit done around the house, watch my White Sox get beat. To top it off I am actually alert this morning.

I live in a place where almost everyone drinks. People drink all day and night alot of the time. So the thought of me quitting forever is a hard one because the stuff is around me so much. We have the highest unemployment rate in canada so i guess that plays some part.

Granted ive gotten turned from alcohol as of late. There are just too many bad memories attached to it. Hopefully that will keep me from picking up the bottle again.

Yeah, we have one of the highest in the nation and the highest in Illinois. It is getting worse too with the recession. You can see it.

Remember, at least in the US, unemployment only measures people actively looking for a job. I'd guess the actual rate is about 30 to 40 here.

I am a social worker so I am all over the city and in the worst parts often. You will see dudes slamming malt liquor 40s at 8:30 in the morning coming down from the night before. Its a cycle that repeats constantly. I swear my job has curbed my use more then any meeting ever has (thats just me though).

^ The worst place I've seen for alcoholism is Russia. My girlfriend and I arrived in one city by train at 7am, and literally about 60-70% of people on their way to work had a beer in their hands, staving off withdrawals. One guy that I got drunk with over there said that everyone considered beer a soft drink in the same way that people here think of sprite or coke. It's something to be drunk continuously throughout the day, whereas vodka is what people drink when they plan to get drunk. It's been harder enough cutting down and taking breaks from alcohol in England, because of our drinking culture, but I don't honestly think I could do it if I lived in Russia, particularly away from Moscow/St Petersburg.

^Wow, thats pretty shocking that in Russia beer is like a soda over here. I can't even imagine 60% of the work force driving/going to work with a beer in hand! I guess it does go to show that environment and cultural norms concerning alcohol play a huge role in what is "accepted", and furthermore set standard on people's drinking behavior.

^Yeah I agree. It's funny though, most of those Russians seemed to be functioning alcoholics, there were probably the same amount of "drunks" as you get in London. But either way it takes its toll on your body and brain.
