I just did. It's apparently, as of 2007, illegal to import kava into Australia in all instances that do not fall into the "small amounts for personal use" category. Seems kind of fuzzy. But ya, I'm guessing that headshops and pharmacies won't bother importing such small quantities, so it really is a 'do your research, order at your own risk' kind of thing.

Hey thanks for the info on the Redleader :)
I'm going to look in to it a bit further. I've had kava once and I can definitely see how it would be a nice (healthier) substitute for alcohol.
<3

Ahhhh very good tip!!! I had it in tea form when I tried it.
Are you referring to the taste when you say it was one of the worst concoctions ever??

I have photographic evidence that it is one of the most foul-tasting tinctures on the planet......

isnt kava addictive? scuse my ignorance if im wrong, just something i thought i heard :\

It was banned from importation in Australia (well at leas the government's reason was...) because it was being "abused" in Aboriginal communities. I find this hard to believe, because really it does not produce any strong, noticible effects. It just makes ya tired and calm, kind of like a dose of valerian. I don't think you could get addicted to it, but people can get "addicted" to nearly anything.

I'm not a believer in divine intervention, but...

15 days I made it. Then tonight, 10 minutes before all alcohol sales ended for the night, I bought a bottle. I had a bad night and was feeling very physically anxious, and just really felt justified in doing it. Again, I want to believe that I could one day control my drinking, because not drinking EVER seems a lot harder than say, drinking once every 15 days. Anyway...

On the way into my place, I accidently dropped the bottle and it broke into a thousand pieces. It would have been too late to turn around and buy another.

So my sober streak contiunes. Kind of strange ya, and I am sad in a way. But it's also kinda freaky.

thanks for correcting my beliefs on kava
it might b a gd alcohol alternative for paul now hes off the bottle
he seems to b relying more and more on valium - asking for valium evry time something comes up like his hearing tomorrow
this worries me as alcohol and benzos hav such similar properties and his dad is a recovering benzo addict
id much rather he had some kava - he refuses to take valerian cos he 'hates the taste of the pills' 8(

Redleader -- tragic irony! Too bad you hadn't used the $$ on something better first :\

I've been drinking this wknd, but only cos I'm visiting family, and it would arise suspicions if I didn't.
I'll be miserable as soon as I get home tho .. Things have been horrible in my house, so I may just start again until I lose my job or finally evict my alchy friend.

just checking in... i was really tempted to drink last night but i was able to say no. it's the first time i've been able to check such a huge impulse since i quit drinking daily months ago. things are looking up...

^^ that's great you didn't give in thujone, good work :)

Wow RL, that is pretty freaky! 8o
Congratulations on completing the 15 days sobriety by the way, you should be very proud of yourself <3

This is the supplement list that I have been using daily in getting sober:

200mg L-Theanine (<- very good product)
100mg Green Tea Leaf Extract
2000mg Fish Oil Concentrate (omega-3)
500mg Magnesium
100mg 5-HTP
300mg Milk Thistle
1 Multivitamin
Kava Kava (as needed)

L-Theanine is a great OTC product for anxiety and stress relief.

Wow that sounds like a very healthy stack! I'm thinking of getting some L-Theanine and doing something similar (flax seed oil instead of fish though). You can still get Kava in tablet form in Australia "Thompsons - 60x2400mg tablets" and I think it's still legal to bring into the country in small amounts for personal use if you happen to be holiday-ing in fiji?

Edit: I've tried grean tea extract, ginko, and rhodiola rosea before and could not imagine anything on this planet tasting worse! You need to cap that stuff!

Bah, I blacked out again this week-end, seems i'm too stupid to learn. Ended up going out drinking with a friend and he was buying me shots which I should have declined but once you've already had a few you think it won't do any harm. Also, i've noticed I just drink until its gone. Its not like I put it down for a a while and have a dance, if its in my hand I have to finish it no matter what. Stupid lack of self control, pfft.

Anyway, somehow I made it home but my pockets were empty and I'd lost my phone and all the numbers it in (so annoying). I can't even remember leaving the club or how I managed to make it through my front door which really scares me. I think I really need to stop drinking all together. I pretty much drink every other day but not to the point of getting wasted. I rarely black out anymore but it seems as though going to the pub has become a regular thing. In fact, that is my social life, going to the pub. Fuck, what a load of crap. What a waste of time and money.

I know i've had a bad experience but I honestly do think alcohol is the shittiest of drugs. Plus its so easy to make it routine since its everywhere you look and its what most people my age do. Bollocks to it and sorry guys, I just had to get this off my chest.

Drank this weekend, but haven't really gotten drunk in awhile. Was even able to go out on Saturday and have 2 drinks then go home.

neo said she was going to research this, did you get any more information about Australia and kava?

99% of the information I found was relating to indigenous communities and the monitoring of kava use/abuse, which apparently has been an issue in the past.
I didn't find any information about importing kava products (other than in powdered form) for personal/recreational use other than that it's illegal to import it without a license. But it is legal to bring in up to 2kg of kava powder within your personal luggage on a plane.

You can get in at most stores with pharmacies and nearly any place that supplements to weight lifters + many places online. Buying the powder form is cheapest. You dissolve the powder in a glass of water or other beverage. You can do around a tablespoon two or three times a day.

Thanks so much for the glutamine tip Enki. I just bought some from the health food/supplement store.

The shop assistant was very helpful and actually suggested that for gut mucosa repair I should mix the glutamine powder with some slippery elm powder. The slippery elm apparently slows the absorption of the glutamine so that it can assist more with the gut repair, as opposed to helping with cognitive function (another of glutamine's indications).

She then also sugested I mix it with some melaleuca honey which has anti-bacterial properties, but I think she probably recommends that for everyone/everything ;) :)

to update u all on pauls journey he is now on his 3rd week of rehab - hes living in one of the flats there, as opposed to the dorms
its a program where very few seem to make it but i think he will
he doesnt even hav the desire to drink, strangely
he only craves it under stress

hes bn for his hearing and his lawyer reckons he wont get a prison sentence esp if by the time the trial comes up (may) hes still dry
which, with a bit of work on both our parts, he will b <3

Cool tip. I need to get back into nutritional/botanical health studies, I might be at the point where I've forgotten more than I know anymore. There are people who say that besides protecting one's tummy it also decreases cravings and binges.

I'm going into detox for 7 days in a few weeks. I'm kind of scared but i know that i need to at least go 7 days before i can imagine going longer sober. eek!

I headed out to get booze twice last nite, but came back with only milk & dinner :)

My roomie has been hitting the bottle hard while I was gone (normally he just drinks pints). He should be sentenced for his 2nd DUI today. No jail time tho, unfortunately.
Now I'm off to try and save my job. Sometimes being sober isn't enough :\
