Alcohol Alcohol Megathread

Cheers :)

There are mainly two variations of absinthe - the Bohemian style, which is more or less just high-proof liquor, and the Parisienne / Swiss style made per the original recipe. The latter is the only type of absinthe really worth drinking. The effects are usually 1) the effects of the alcohol are muted, 2) mild hallucinations - music sounds more interesting, streetlamps start to get a fragmented aura like the stars in that Van Gogh painting. So yeah it's an interesting experience
Do you know of any specific brands you've had that give the classic Parisienne 'La Fet Vert' effect?

La Fée is fine, it's sort of like the Budweiser of absinthe and there are a number of importers in America so should be able to find it at a specialty liquor shop.

Alcohol is kind of like a psychedelic in small doses being different from high doses. At low doses it's basically a hearty social lubricant. High doses are largely dissociative.

By the Budweiser of Absinthe do you mean nasty and gives you the shits? Or that it’s common and thus easy to find?

I want to know what the Karpackie of absinthe is. I'd be tripping off my nut for weeks...

But yeh, high dose spirits can be kind of hallucinogenic without any wormwood. Many a time I've gone out at night for more vodka, seen the sky and gone "wooah". It takes quite a tolerance to reach that state though, otherwise you just fall over hours earlier.

Alcohol in moderation is OK, but my grandfather was an alcoholic and it totally wrecked him to the point where he died before I could really get to know him.
Also, once you've seen how chronic alcoholics live, you really think twice before drinking too much....

It does suprise my friends though. I am very upfront that I am a lightweight, and sure enough after 2 or 3 strong beers I'm zig-zagging and rosy-cheeked. Over the years I've learned that more is not better with ethanol, and now that I know what level of intoxication I can function at I rarely have a hangover.

I never understood people who claim that "you can't taste the alcohol in [XYZ drink]!". I always can. Maybe it's the infrequency with which I drink or maybe I'm sensitive to it.

Yeah, once you see how a chronic alcoholic dies then you think twice. It’s the most horrific thing ever and I’ll never get the smell out of my mind.

I’m not a lightweight in regards to alcohol, I know my limits now usually. The only time I drink excessively is if someone is buying my cocktails and I’ve no idea what’s in them.

But yeah, I can definitely taste the alcohol in a beverage, easily but then I’ve very heightened taste and smell.

the latter, but it's high-proof liquor so not easy to drink either way. the traditional way it is to pour water over a sugar cube in a slotted spoon but IMHO it's better enjoyed as an Irish Car Bomb with berry juice instead of beer ;)

Good to know. Got a giant liquor store nearby that sells a few absinthe brands, I'll have to look for it next time I'm there (y)

However; I am a binge drinker.
I hate myself.

I'm a binge drinker and I most deffo do not hate myself.
Why do you hate yourself? Does binge drinking fuck with your life in ways other than the obvious negative health effects?

If something's causing you to hate yourself, I've found the best solution to be the rather obvious one....which, trust me, I understand is easier said than done, but well worth getting stubbornly into sorting out.

Yeah.....nothing to be proud of but I've had quite a few weekends where after drinking for like 16-18 hours and it's the day after now and you haven't slept or barely slept, it starts to feel a bit like ketamine crossed with mushrooms. Weird tunnel vision type shit.....everything seems way the fuck brighter than normal.....and your mind becomes weird where everything becomes a giant joke. I mean everything.

I think the way it feels is really fun and appealing and why I still binge drink (I mean other than the brain damage caused by binge drinking which has been clinically shown to destroy all inhibitory brain function after a couple of drinks in binge drinkers).

So does that mean I'm alright because I drink constantly rather than in binges..?

I don't get any euphoria at all. But it just tastes delicious and I find it increasingly challenging to overcome the compulsion to go out, buy and drink a bottle. Or down a cocktail. The worst part is I drink a glass of wine in a few gulps, same with a cocktail. A whole bottle of sherry can go in an hour without me even noticing. It's really sneaky stuff.

I love sherry. Has a very sedating effect. It's just not strong enough though...

Well, no, you're still a toxified mess from the acetaldehyde and associated fuckery, but your brain isn't dealing with he same structural changes as a binge drinker's.....so that's good, I guess.

That's when you have some more...

That just makes the hyperactivity worse, mate.

Maybe it's a binge drinking thing but anything more than one, maybe two pints-worth and I'm just ready for the next 20 hrs.

It's a really incongruous effect....or they're putting meth in our drinks down at the pub....and the stadium....and the wine bar....and the local brewery.

Fucking conspiracy, for sure. ;)
