ADD/ADHD treatment

I've had ADD for several years now, but I'm having a hard time getting any help for it cuz of my past amphetamine abuse history. I've never been treated for it before, but I really feel like I need meds for it now cuz its just getting out of hand. I'm doing alot of freelance web development contract work and right now I have more projects than I can handle on my own, and am making really good money despite the way the economy is. But when I work on a project, it takes me way more time than it should cuz I have such a hard time focusing and concentrating on any one thing.
THe other day when I went to my county regional services where I always go to get my mental health treatment, I went and saw the RN about it. I talked to him about it, and he already knew about my past drug abuse history. I told him, before anything, that I need meds for it, and I told him I don't want ANY stimulant to help me treat it, cuz I already knew what he would think. And even after I told him that, he looked down at his desk, and asked me if I was talking about Ritalin. After I already fucking told him that I don't want an amphetamine cuz I already know what thats going to lead to. So now I set an appointment to see my psychiatrist about it in a couple weeks. But I'm so scared that they're gonna assume I just want something to get high off of, and they won't take me seriously.

Anyone else ever have this problem and got treatment for their ADD?

There are no drug treatments for ADD besides stimulants.

What?

That is a very inaccurate statement. Strattera is a non-stimulant medication prescribed for the sole purpose of treating ADHD. Stimulants are just the first line of meds.

Also, Wellbutrin (bupropion) is prescribed off-label to treat ADHD, sometimes by itself and other times to augment stimulant treatment.

To the OP: Check out www.addforums.com , they have a wonderfully helpful community and there's a ton of info there that can help you. It's been almost a year since I got my ADHD diagnosed, and while I DO take stimulant medication, there are plenty of others who do not. It's all about finding a good doc who will help you troubleshoot this and that until you find what's right for you :)

How can I get the doctors to take me seriously when I ask for help for this? it seems like just because I used to be a worthless tweaker thats all they can see now. I don't wanna have to go doctor shopping just to get someone that doesn't know about my past, just so I can get help for this.
The other day I seriously considered scoring some crystal again just so I can get all this work done on time and be able to focus for a change. But I have over 6 months clean off all hard drugs since I got out of rehab last year, and I dont wanna throw all that away just cuz no doctors will help me

Strattera and Wellbutrin are stimulants! They're both norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and Wellbutrin is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor like cocaine/Ritalin.

i have the same problem you do, in that i refuse to be prescribed stims because i know i would abuse them.

you might try strattera (which, norepinephrine or not, doesn't behave at all like ritalin/adderall .. every bit of information you can find on it refers to it as an alternative to stimulants), although i found it gave me too much nausea to do any good.

at this point, i basically just use OTC stimulants and try and switch back and forth enough to keep my tolerances low. coffee, red bull, ginseng, 5 hour energy, etc. one thing i also recommend is looking into cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). there's a lot you can do organization/lifestyle-wise that can really improve your productivity with or without drug therapy.

I'm sorry, in hindsight I suppose you were right. They are technically stimulants because they stimulate the nervous system. Wellbutrin has a similar structure to a group of stimulants as well.

I guess the reason I disagreed was because they are not traditional stimulants. In fact Strattera has/is being marketed as the first "non-stimulant ADHD medication", and "non-abusable". Wellbutrin would also be equally useless recreationally, and it's stimulating effects are like coffee the first few times, and then once you get used to it, it's like any other antidepressant (except better IMO).

And yeah, bupropion is an DNRI (Dopamine norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor) like cocaine and ritalin, the subjective effects are much different. It also plays with other receptors in the brain like the nicotinic receptors, which is why it's also prescribed as a smoking-cessation aid. Most other stimulants make smokers want to chain smoke....I don't know as much about Strattera (just an NRI) but from what many ADHD people on the web say about it, I've gotten the impression it just makes people either sleepy, sick, or unable to sleep. Not euphoric or abuseable at all.

So, to the OP, there are non-abuseable alternatives to ritalin and adderall that you might consider. Also, many ADHD patients used to or currently abuse drugs to self-medicate, and a good doctor will know that and recognize it. I told my doctor about taking drugs in high school (ok, maybe not every little detail...) and he didn't even blink. The next appointment he prescribed ritalin. I've changed meds since then, but yeah. They shouldn't treat you like a drug-seeker, especially if you're knowledgeable about "non-stimulant" medications.

strattera has the same side effects as antidepressants,

dexedrine works for me,

cannabis hasn`tbeen widely, studdied enough, but has some promissing effects for some people

fine something you love, that you can hyper focus on
like albert einstein,

usually youll need a adhd specicialst to diagnose it
testing is quite costly

idont recomend strattera from personal experiences,
painful orgasms, anxiety, my stomach never felt hungry,
to this day, my cock, still hurts sometimes when i cum, but,
to each and his own, i stopped taking strattera, i flushed it down the toilet, i wasted lots of medication and my parents money, because i hated it
i hated it,
i hated it,

i would right more, but i can`t focus right now
im not on any medication its 2:15 in the morning
and lost is a trippy show

see i can hyper focus on stuff like that
haha i watched 30 episodes in the past three days:)

hahahaha
heartburn

Just get an extended release stimulant that's a pain in the ass to abuse like Adderall XR and you should be good. I used to be waaay into speed, but I never abuse my XR. I tried to, but it really is a huge pain.

There's alway stuff like caffine , ginseg , etc

or you can try some nootropics ?? Like ginko balbioa (don't know correc spellings lol) or piracetam ? Some people say it has worke wonders for add and concerntration .

But others also say they can't feel their effects

maybe tell your doctor that vyvanse is specially made to be hard to abuse?? if you want to know, here is a list of all the adhd medications - a lot of people with adhd have substance abuse issues because they are not treated for adhd and the substances help them...

at theraputic doses, taken properly, it is hard to abuse most adhd meds.

a low dose, maybe, aswell,
um, and atleast in canada, the doctor can write on the perscitpion of how often to distriubute the pills, 15mg dex might be good enough

but if you can afford it try strattera, i was prolly quit to respond yesturday,
im thinking a little straighter right now, because i haven't sleptanyways, back to last

There's a drug called Focalin (spelling?). My cousin (a former addict) has taken at the appropriate dose with no problem.

^Some people find focalin to be extremely pleasurable. Its just d-isomer methylphenidate (ritalin). I was prescribed it in addition to adderall XR for about 5 years. Feels very similar subjectively to cocaine, but more pleasurable. Also, short duration and shitty comedown.

My advice is to learn to deal with your ADHD issues without stimulants. They're a trap, and they'll only make the problem worse. But if you feel you cannot function without them, then try to at least get an XR preparation and use it sparingly.

i take fish oil and acetyl-l-carnitine to help me focus. also caffeine.

i find kratom is excellent for focus, particularly thai strains.

i'm going to give geranamine and phenylethylamine a shot as well, will let you know how they work.
