I've been receiving PM's, phone calls, emails and SMS's from people off and on bluelight in regards to the merc reopening/reopened/open as a gay bar/open as a top 40 club.

After just walking past it myself, I can definitively say that it is NOT reopen, nor will it be for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time if ever. Its still boarded up, and there is absolutely no sign of the place even being opened up to check the interior let alone redo the whole place.

So please, everyone (mostly non blers, so this is almost pointless), STOP asking me if its open. It isnt.

Edited to make it make sense!!!

Nutshell = Nutshell Breaks - Best dance event in Newcastle.

Awesome breaks night normally.

yes it is true, if it wasn't for nutshell breaks this place would be dead dance scene wise. quality, quality, quality. it's a shame i'm not into breaks though.

well if and when it does reopen, i hope it is a gay bar, not an rnb/hip hop joint.
obviously there is less chance of violence occurring if it was a gay bar, but i fail to see a venue of that size opening as a gay bar in newcastle. actually there would probably be just as much violence orchestrated by homophobes waiting in the streets outside.

Hey all, can anyone tell me clubs in newcastle were they play hardhouse/trance?? apparantly KSH does a little?? What about the Mercury? Is it Re-openeing for Trance Music? Any where else?

the signs in the window at the merc are gone now just looks like it's about to be gutted...

oh well..

newi sux for music man, there is no good clubs left, you might get the odd good event at king street or the underground, but thats about it man, it's sad :\

:: modified from my journal ::

I was all set to go out clubbing last night, it has been a while! Decided to go to a free trance party at King St which I *thought* was the only decent place in town these days.
We were all prepared to dance the night away.

Much to our suprise we were turned down at the door because peet wasn't wearing sleeves. So he said fair enough if I put some sleeves on will I get in? the guy on the door said sure. So we got a shirt for peet. We proceeded to line up again and were rejected a second time, this time because of his brand new rockin pants that he had sewn that day! grrrrrr to them after they had just told him he would be allowed in if he just changed his shirt.
PANTS.jpg

They were being absolute fucking tossers, we argued with them for about half an hour, as there was nothing whatsoever wrong with his pants (they are denim and they are clubbing style), and the guy wants him to dress like some kind of manager at work with black dress pants? He even told us to fuck off, really professional. He wasn't just being a tool to us but he turned another guy down for his brand new $200 shoes. Go figure.

There was no where else to go so we went home. :\

King st has their heads up their asses cause they are the only dance venue left in town. I urge everyone to stay away from the joint in the hope that something else will get going. This is why Nutshell has moved back to the cambridge (thank god) because of the fuck tard attitude at King st.

Newcastle scene sucks big time atm, glad I'm mostly over it.

See y'all at nutshell? woody I didn't know you where back in town?

they seem quite happy though to let in unsavoury types who start fights from what i've heard. i was told not too long ago by a fellow bl that the first fights he'd seen in a club in a long, long time had occurred at king st.

being a free night, the bouncers may have been instructed by management to not let in anyone who looked as though they were not going to spend big time at the bar, though being a trance night you'd have to expect to sell more water than beer.

perhaps you should make up some posters with "love dance, hate king st" in big bold type and go on late night posting missions ;)

don't be a stranger to bl bel.

The thing is they where rejecting everyone who turned up early, we got there at 10:30 to make sure we would get in, so it isn't very fair for those ppl who make that effort.

dq is doing her part, and hopefully by xmas i shall return to the real world and do mine. things have to die so others can be born.

^ probably true.
One of my friends believes that ppl are going back to rock/band music. Most ppl I know go to see bands now.
I went to see poland and the grates with them the other day, and no one was even dancing... boring!
But i think techno will survive! Well, it is in other towns.

Doofqueen what have you got planned? I'm so out of the loop.

^^ i'm putting on an all female psytrance night (everyone can come though, tis just all girls playing) which will also be a charity event and the money will be going towards women who have been in domestic violence situations.

It's called Paranormal Vixen Chaos and naturally everyone is encouraged to wear PVC ;)

woody - are you right in newie again? cos i was there today! should have buzzed you, will next time for sure! =D

well, more like other countries. dance music will survive in newcastle as long as nutshell continues to deliver the quality. unfortunately if breakbeat is not to your taste then things are indeed starting to look bleak. i'm not sure whether patsan's parties are going to be any good or not. lets hope dq's night turns into a regular monthly gig, that should keep the psytrance heads happy at least, but what about the lovers of techno, electro, electroclash, house, and trance?

one step at a time i guess.
