it really does suck. newcastle could have somewhat of a cool dance scene if only 1 or 2 more nights opened that measured up to nutshell in terms of quality but featured other dance genres. :(

That was one of the many reasons. Others included the fact it was running at a great loss due to uh... management. Those DJ's are expensive. I really doubt it will reopen, since the building is derelict and I cant say I have heard a thing about their license since last year.

The club that was supposed to be opening next to PDMS in the old kensington seems to have died in the arse too. My sources tell me that they wanted to take over the JR's license, but due to major fuckup in the paperwork, it'd only be a 10pm license. Not too great if you want to have a dance venue.

Its all on the LAB website or Newcastle Council website - it's where we found it.
 
I'll agree with the meat head comments about newie night life. It was cool when it was the only thing i knew about (to go out etc) but once i went to a doof i kissed that scene good bye!

I will be putting on a psytrance night in newie early july though. Keep a look out in events closer to the date ;)

For sure! My crew is growing by the day and it's way cool that so many people want to be involved and the more the merrier i say so anyone who would like to be a part of it is motre then welcome. I'm sure i can find a job for you to do =D

I have a venue lined up already but i had a look at the space the other day and they reckon they can hold 150 people but it was so small so am on a look out for a new venue for sure!

150 is an ok capacity. better to have a packed small venue for atmosphere than a large venue half filled.

a 10 buck entry on a full night at such a venue would bring in fantastic revenue. you could afford to pay the djs proper rates, hire a great sound system, and you'd probably only need to pay for one security guard. you'd also have the funds to finance your next night and have a little left over to pay your mates and yourself as reward for all the hard work that putting on such a night requires.

great to hear somebody else is going to give it a go. it's the small promoters who put on nights for fun and very little profit, if any, that keep the dance scene alive, not the financial backers for large festivals whose only motive is to make money.
 
It's a benifit night though and everyone who is playing and helping are doing it for free because it's for charity.

I agree that it's better to have a packed little venue then a half empty big one but i don't think this room (including a decent sized dance floor) really will hold 150 people. It was really small as i said and i really can't see that many people actually even fitting in there (comfortably anyway) and i have security covered out of the door price already so it's all good on that side (unless i change venues that is and maybe things will change)

A warehouse would be tops though... i'll have to see what i can come up with..

BTW Cambo is good on wed nights these days too $2.50 schooners and spirits.

I was stoked when i got the sms about Nutshell being back at the cambridge.. My first thought was 'Yay less fuckheads' and it still remains so :)

Has been a while since the last one.

edited to make sense and also to say the cambridge instead of the merc. No idea what inspired me to get it that wrong!!

Awesome breaks night normally.

I have only been to fannys once and that was only to watch area7/Skulker.

I will never ever enter that shithole again. It's meathead and sluts central.. as for the merc - I wasn't aware it re-opened - Last i heard it was meant to reopen as another top 40/rnb style club.

How tremendous - we had a shortfall of those 8(.

I went to a breaks night at the grand (underground) a few weeks ago, it was ok but it could have been better.

I seen area 7 and skulker at the paley (sp?) about 3 years ago, the singer from skulker cept zapin herself on the microphone, it was funny.

Thats the same shit I herd about the merc aswell, dam top 40 music :X we need some new shit in newi man :\

I think I might check out this re - opening party, for old times sake ;)

I don't go upstairs at the grand much, but I usually pay a visit to the underground when im out and about in town, they have a good dj every now and then, you never know when you might get lucky :\
