annot understand all the hate towards the movie. Especially idiotic shit like this

makes me think of the anti-drug propaganda that only talks about supposedly catastrophic effects of drugs and lets you wonder "if it's that bad and only bad, why do people take them?"

....ITS A MOVIE, ofcourse its going to be fucking bias.... TO THE AUTHORS/DIRECTORS/SCRIPTWRITER WHATEVER P.O.V. FOR _THEIR_ STORY.
Some of the most contripe bullshit I've ever seen on this site.. and that is saying something.


Got a vast amount of Dick books, but not the one the movie is based on. Even so I could see it playing out like that in his book, a great adaptation - spot on to his, somewhat psychotic, style. Sure beat the hell out of most regurgitated third world shit movies I'd be fucking embarrassed to say i've seen.

The most illusive attribute of the film, and yet the most important

That's the thing, most people say how cool the storyline is and techniques, character development etc. but for me, the most amazing thing is how it captures the illusive essence of the poly-drug use film genre.

Its like the modern equivalent of a stoner film with much more complexity and depth, engaging narrative with regular quasi-surreal satire, and that slight edge of unreality so appropriate to the lifestyles of the regularly twisted.

Overall it reminded me of nothing more than the first time I saw the legendary Hunter epic "Fear and Loathing", damn near on par and remarkably similar feeling... and watching while hyper-hash-high and post-tweaking is all the better . Truly an undervalued instant-classic.

The book was better, but the unique style of the movie made it worthwhile. Rotoscoping is appropriate to Philip K Dick novels, I think.

The author is one of my all time favorites..

sorry, just thought I might try and re-stimulate discussion on this. Didn't like it too much when I saw it first time round in the cinema, but older and wiser that I am now, I really enjoyed this film. Any others feel the same?

Rob Downey Jr is fantastic - oh and Keanu Reeves puts in a rare good performance.

First off I have to say I love this movie, and I've always wondered about Substance D and what class of drugs it belongs to...The way the movie portrays it, it seems to have effects similar to methamphetamine, with the withdrawal profile similar to opiates. Anyone else come up with theories as to what type of drug Substance D actually is in the movie?

One of those movies I enjoy just as much the last time I saw it every time I put it on.
Also, leant it out and introduced it to quite a few friends whom all have loved it :D

As far as the movie, I like movies that use the rotoscoping technique and wish a few more movies would try it out, especially those of the headfuck kind.

Scanner is one of my all time faves. Much like Fight Club's relationship to its source material, I've found this film to be a near-perfect visual supplement to its printed counterpart. Had I not seen the movie first, PKD's unnecessarily long, plodding narrative would have been impossible for me to finish. Even as a standalone work, I can't give this movie anything less than a 4. Also: I've really, really enjoyed Woody Harrelson's many performances, typecast though he may be. In my experience, at least, he never disappoints.
