Just about the only film I'm truly, truly excited about... and I only just found out about it (cheers, shejustspun)!

There was a brief thread about the production of this film and some continuing chatter about the rotoscope effects (merge if necessary)... but now, it's finally here!

Slated for a US release in mid-July, it looks like it's gonna be a cracker! Linklater and Philip K Dick!!! Robert Downy Jr, Woody Harrelson, Wynona Ryder and, um... yeah, Keanu Reeves... so it's got the sort of cast that could make it spring to life. Alex Jones makes a fitting appearance as well!

Check out the website, it's really quite something else! Updated and new clips are also available.

Yeah I've been waiting on this one for about 18 months now when it was first announced, can't wait.

Rotoscoping is the same effect used in Waking Life.

Ahhhh yes I cannot wait (just one more week)! I love Linklater and I'm sure he'll make this into a great movie. If anyone hasn't read the book yet, I suggest picking up a copy immediately.

story and design is hot, hot, hot! didn't think much of the trailer though in terms of selling the movie.

ya, ive seen several tv spots where they try to play to very different audiences. It kinda makes me worry about the movie, but I'm still going to be there opening night.

I think that's a product of a Warner Brother's PR department desperate to sell a niche film outside of its niche audience.

At least I hope so.

Film: A Scanner Darkly

"A Scanner Darkly" is a new film coming out based on a story from Philip K. Dick, sci-fi author/prophet/schizophrenic whose stories are the basis for the films "Blade Runner," "Minority Report," and "Total Recall." It's about an undercover narc whose sense of reality becomes more and more distorted as he uses and sells an illicit hallucinogen. The film is done with the same rotoscoping technique as "Waking Life" and those irritating Charles Schwab ads. Art Linkletter, who directed "Waking Life" and "Dazed and Confused" is the director, and unfortunately he's directing Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. Despite those minor speedbumps, I'm pretty stoked to see this. Any thoughts?

"Blade Runner" is one of my all time favorite science fiction films (the director's cut), and the book it is based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is pretty damn good as well. Dick is a bit of a maniac but a very imaginative and visionary writer who looks to finally be getting his mainstream respect. This guy was a maniac who claimed he was contacted by a vast pan-dimensional non-corporeal being called a VALIS, among other things. Worth looking into.
