Believe it or not, those night time drinks you probably haven't touched for years might do you some good. Both Horlicks and Ovaltine owe their much vaunted "sleepy" qualities to the fact they have high levels of Tryptophan. These drinks make you sleepy because the Typtophan causes a surge in seretonin in the brain, therefore beginning to 'replace' what the pills have sucked out into the lower cleft of your brain.
DOES IT WORK? Yes: drink a cup of Ovaltine or Horlicks after a big night and before you go to bed. It doesn't look cool, but may save a few brain cells. :)

blufluffybunny you are a genius! :)
I haven't had Ovaltine in years.
And anyone who says it isn't cool is dead wrong!
Thanks, I'll give this one a go. Even just to remember what it tastes like

In addition im going to start pre and post loading with ovalteenies - beats the hell out of 5-htp and a darn sight easier to procure. Thanks, blufluffybunny :)
J/k i will still use 5-htp on comedown but a steady diet of ovalteenies is just what the doctor ordered, or at least thats the story im going to stick to.

Do they still make ovaltinees? haven't seen em since i was in school. Ovaltine + horlicks + tv snack wafer bites= my next comedown meal

If you find yourself without any Horlicks or Ovaltine, a cup of warm milk would do nicely. When milk is heated, tryptophan is released. When i was little, my mamma used to make me a cup or warm milk and honey whenever i had a nightmare. Worked a treat :)

HAHA
wot a coincedence
it was only the other day when i mentioned how i hadnt had ovaltines in a few yrs :) ))

is it nescessary to have your ovaline in warm milk? because warm milk tends to mildy upset my tum tum... and i have horrible memories of my step-mother scorching milk - that smell makes my stomach turn... and the "skin" on top of warm milk... uuugghhhhh....
*goes and lies down feely mildly nauseus*

I would assume not considering OVALTINE and Horlicks have Tryptophan IN them.
I guess warm milk is just an added bonus. PLus it helps you sleep. (and we ALL know that can be a problem sometimes)

You will find that hot milk will do just as much good for your sleep as ovaltine etc...
A cup of hot milk with sugar always makes me feel tired and sleepy.
I suspect it is the large quantities of Tryptophan in milk that does it.

Take a look at this for a negative look at ovaltine! It alctually uses three Artificial colours! ;)
Nothing in Ovaltine leads to suspect a sedative exists in it.

hehehe that is such a classic!!! thanks for that brainwave! I'm totally buying some ovaltine, I always knew there was a reason I was addicted to it as a kid... although it could well be those pesky artificial colours and flavours...

Hrmm, this might also help with getting some sleep after a meth session. And also helping with serotonin as meth does release some serotonin that needs to be replaced/rebuilt afterwards :)
GREAT THREAD BFB.....

*takes a bow*
I must say...... Myself and Nocturnal chick have been drinking Horlicks or Ovaltine b4 bed. We are sleeping like logs and waking up pretty fresh. Also Miss 'don't tlak to me I've just woken up' is now VERY chirpy in the morning.
Kinda freakin me out
*hugs Nocturnal_chick*
Highly recommended*!
*drinking horlicks.... not hugging my girlfriend ;)

The ovaltine/horlicks advice was from a copy on MixMag a couple of years ago, '99 I think...
Just don't go assuming that you can go out and rail 8 points of powpow, pump down a few mugs of ovaltine and sleep like a bub till work the next morning...
:)

How do you know those drinks contain tryptophan, I checked the labes on both of them and only saw the usual showing of vitamins and minerals, not a mention of tryptophan unless it has a sneaky second name which I was too stupid to know about. :D
Just curious, any information would be appreciated. :)

Slightly off-topic note: In the above article they state that Prozac after E doesn't work and makes you jittery - this is erroneous. The reason they suggest Prozac doesn't work is because the anti-depressant effects can take up to 2 weeks to start working, but the SSRI action begins as soon as the drug starts working.

Some foods that also contain tryptophan are Turkey, milk, bananas, pineapple, avocado, papaya, dates, plums, fish, figs, cottage cheese, pecans, walnuts, tomatoes, kiwifruit.
some sites to read are: http://sleepdisorders.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.suite101.com%2Farticle.cfm%2Fhealthy_women%2F17700

And if you want to do your own research, use http://www.google.com/search?q=drink+that+contain+tryptophan&hl=en&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&start=10&sa=N as a starting guide..
Hope this helps.
