Both Horlicks and Ovaltine owe their much vaunted "sleepy" qualities to the fact they have high levels of Tryptophan. These drinks make you sleepy because the Typtophan causes a surge in seretonin in the brain, therefore beginning to 'replace' what the pills have sucked out into the lower cleft of your brain.
