2016 American Presidential Campaign

Sad but true, Dropper. Billary was preselected by the DNC party bosses years ago. Keep supporting Bernie, but once Billary gets the nomination, the country needs to choose the nuclear option. That could be a write in or a third party. But I think the best way to show our disgust would be to vote for Trump as a protest vote. As a bonus, the GOP party bosses hate Trump because he is not part of the political "establishment" as far as I can tell.

On the contrary, people working to elect Bernie are engaged in the purest form of engagement in the democratic process the presidential race has seen in living memory.
Naysayers who implicitly (or explicitly) throw their support behind establishment figures - or outlying fruitcakes as the case may be (ron paul anyone?) are arguably the people living in a fantasy world.

Everyone knows Sanders is up against a lot - as evidenced in the number of remarks about how the media will spin the result in Michigan. So you're just repeating yourself again droppy.

Indeed, Bernie is up against a lot. The Party bosses chose Billary years ago. The media is in on it with their "Hillary is inevitable" bs. Clinton has gotten exponentially more free and favorable press by the media establishment. The ethnic vote is puzzling and disappointing. People always vote against their best interests. The stupid baby boomers, especially women older than 50 years, overwhelmingly support Clinton too. I think women of that age are overwhelmingly sexist and vote for gender while being blind to everything else. Not that it will affect them. They have already retired and have one foot in the grave. But it affects the rest of us, not that they care.

I admire the Bernie supporters and believe they are doing the right thing. It will take a breakthrough, but he still has a chance. If not, everyone needs to be ready to use the nuclear option (protest vote for Trump) or else it won't be a real threat.

I don't know about that. I know people young and old, male and female, that want to be able to vote for Sanders in the presidential election.
As for "stupid baby boomers" - seriously? Bernie Sanders has perfectly distilled a lot of what that generation fought so hard to change in the 1960s.
That generation helped totally reshape our society - and of course many have moved away from being ideological young people - but conservatism and self-interest are present in every age group, every demographic.
I've known plenty of 20-somethings who are inclined to support political figures I'm disgusted by, and i honestly don't think it has as much to do with age as it does the way people think.
Some people can't grasp the concept of creating a more equitable society as a goal of political leadership. I think that perspective transcends age, gender or ethnicity - some people think things are broken and need fixing - others find comfort in the status quo.

Personally i find the status quo extremely problematic, especially in regards to military spending, drug prohibition, education and health. Other people's perspectives vary from mine, but i don't think they're stupid, necessarily.
But i do think voting for Trump as a protest is rather stupid.

Most of them seem to have sold out. In the 1960s there were hippies who had ideals but by the 1980s many had become YUPPIES happily supporting the status quo. Yes, there were some civil rights activists who did great things, but that generation is the one that has been running the world for decades now and got us into this mess.
Voting for Trump is a good expression of outrage. When it was Gore versus Bush, I wrote in Donald Duck, but Trump is even better as a protest vote. Even his own party hates him. He has a big enough backing that using him as the nuclear option could be a real threat. If we can't have a fair election, we're going to vote for somebody who will mess things up bad. Otherwise, it isn't much of a threat writing in some candidate who will never get more than 2% of the vote.

Michigan was the breakthrough. Showing that he could close a 20 point gap in 1 week has sent his supporters into a frenzy. If you think people were active for Michigan, just wait til you see what happens in Ohio on the 15th. Hillary has something ridiculous like a 30+ point lead in the polls there right now and it's only 6 days away. There are droves of people driving across state lines this week to go knock door-to-door in OH. I just got an email from his campaign today stating that they've received over 100,000 individual donations after the Michigan results were announced late last night. There's a sub-reddit that was created for Sanders 6 months ago with a quarter of a million subscribers working tirelessly to gain more Bernie supporters in each upcoming primary state. Hillary's sub-reddit has been around for over 3 years and has 7,000 members. Sanders literally has an online army converting Clinton backers and undecideds on every singe social media site. It's making Obama's first "grassroots" internet support in '08 look like child's play.

The exit polls last night show that Bernie is gaining ground because his message is getting out to more people. And that's thanks to donations for ads. Hillary was supposed to crush him last night because she dominates the black vote. In SC she got 8 of every 10 black vote. Last night she only got half the black vote. Record numbers of first-time & young voters have been turning out. Record numbers of Independent voters have been turning out in state's with open primaries. He's gaining a lot of steam, and Hillary is losing hers. I just read that one of her Super PACs that were planning to save all their money for the general election just pulled out $4.5 million for ads in some upcoming states that have always been assumed to be Hillary wins by default. They certainly wouldn't be doing that if they weren't worried.

I think there are much better ways of voicing your disapproval, personally.
Ballot box protests are altogether too late - unless there is a candidate worthy of the vote (in my opinion).
The party machine never sees informal votes, so it's a waste of time. Vote counters don't give a damn.

If the party machine bothers you so, why not campaign for Sanders now?
It seems a tad more pragmatic than voting for a creepy egomaniac like Trump. Regardless of generational stereotypes - which are bullshit, for the most part - i don't understand the logic behind voting for someone that already has the "ignorant vote" stitched up.

GM - thanks for that, great post. It's always really refreshing to see the kind of activism taking place that seemed unfathomable until recently.
What i love about the USA is that her people never cease to amaze :)
Sanders is tapping into decades of frustration, cycnicism and disillusion - and turning it into positive community action. Fuck yeah - that's what it's all about, comrades ;)

I support Sanders, but if he doesn't get the nomination, I think the nuclear option is the best way to go. Imagine a president who has only a 10% approval rating on his first day.
That will send a message

I'm looking forward to the debate tonight at 9pm EST. You can either watch it on CNN or stream it over the internet. I feel like every single time those two are on a stage together it's a win for Bernie because when you hear them each speak there's such a contrast imo between Bernie's honesty and sincerity and Hillary's BS polit-talk.

Fun fact: There were over 10 Republican debates held before primaries started. The DNC knows Bernie > Hillary in debates so they only scheduled 4. Bernie tried to participate in an "unsanctioned" debate in New Hamphire and the DNC threatened to ban him from the rest of their debates. He's been penning letters and trying to lobby the DNC head to push for more debates since mid last year. Fucking snakes.

SJ here's an article that about the Trump protest vote: "People who in the past might have gone to the polls only to register their disdain for politicians by writing in “Mickey Mouse” — or perhaps even “Donald Trump” — now have a Republican front-runner to rally around.
Like many sincere Trump supporters, they believe the system is totally screwed up. But instead of viewing Trump as the solution, they view him as the embodiment of the problem. And they say they’re prepared to vote for him to prove it.
“This is the candidate America deserves,” said Jeff DeFlavio, 29, a small-business owner registered as an independent in the nearby town of Lebanon. He said he plans to vote for Trump in the primary, but adds, “His immigration policy is disgusting to me. It’s absolutely revolting … I really don’t want him to become president ever. Ever. He would destroy the world, which is what’s so wonderful about him.”

Yeah, it seems counter-productive to me.
Personally i think the status quo seems better than having an oafish quasi-fascist in the white house (...again)

I'm skeptical about this debate tonight. It's being hosted by Univision, whose owner has donated millions to Hillary over the years. The other sponsor is the Washington Post which I've already explained why I hate for being anti-Bernie.

Nevermind. I was worried about Univision stacking the crowd with Hillary supporters or the hosts asking her easy questions but we're only 2 questions in and they're roasting her already. Tonight is going to end very badly for Hillary.

The host just asked her if she'll drop out of the race if she's indicted for the email scandal lmao. She's toast and all she'll be doing tonight is defending herself while Sanders gets to talk about his campaign platform.

Host: "Secretary Clinton, the most recent national poll shows that only 38% of voters consider you honest and trustworthy. You've stated that that's the result of years of Republican lies and attacks on you, but voters have had 28 years to get to know you while you've been in politics. Why do you think people don't trust you?"

BL's mobile app has been pissing me off lately. Anytime I try to edit a post from my phone it automatically deletes the post. I just wrote up my thoughts on the debate and now they're gone.

In short: I think tonight was by far Hillary's worst. Other than his response to his comments on Castro from an interview in 1985(lol), I think Bernie crushed the rest of the night. I've never seen Hillary look so agitated/uncomfortable/angry before. Bernie won over a lot of Latino voters tonight.
