2012 Olympic flaming

seems like a blown out of proportion load of shite. although im not too bothered about it

the Magna Carta.

Oh my fucking (dark, non-Christian) lord, not that pile of tripe.

That was just a few concessions from a ridiculous hereditary monarch to an equally-ridiculous 'nobility'; a trend which has been echoed in that laughable, class-diseased "traditional" British identity ever since. An identity few actual Britons believe in, hence the (real) British tradition of self-mockery.

A fucking admirable one, too, and one which jingoists easily lose sight of.

I agree with you in part, dhcdavid, but I still respect the roots of the Olympics.
Skilled people in many aspects coming together, showing their skills, and representing their countries.
They've trained their whole lives to get to the point they are now. And I fucking bow to them for that.

But I really do hate this ideas that the event will prosper England, or any country it's held in. I fucking hate the advertisers that jump on it and fuck it like a quadriplegic pig.
"We support the 2012 Olympics!"
No, you don't. You couldn't give two shits about it. What you support is your conglomerate making a fuck load of cash without having to do anything at all but watch the cash roll in.

We should pay for everything in 1p coins and drown the cunts in copper-plated steel! (I had to look that up).

An identity few actual Britons believe in? Are you mad? The biggest selling newspaper is the Daily Mail. A paper which opens every article with the value of someones house and their occupation. Then you have the Guardian whose journalist seem to be having brain aneurysms on a near daily basis because most of the cabinet are from the upper classes. Journalists who, coincidently, in terms of self mocking ability make our almost non-existent jingoists look like Joan Rivers.

I think Sam probably see's it as his & the people around him's tradition of self-mockery. It's the same for me. Yet I do realise that the majority of the people in the country must not be like this based on you saying that the fucking Daily Mail is the biggest selling newspaper, among other things. I just don't know where these people actually are, they are definitely in the incredibly small minority when it comes to the people I have any sort of contact with.

Re the olympics. I wonder how much this cost http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18058190 :|

I think self mockery is much more prevalent up in Scotland than down here. Sam seems to surround himself with feminists and socialists, who take themselves and their opinions extremely seriously in my experience. Sure they might make the occasional self flagilating comment to show how down to earth they are, but I don't think they mean it. If you're lucky you might find one who knows that they have a character flaw. After all they are much more interested in mocking anyone who disagrees with them in any way than themselves. If you take the piss out of anything they believe in expect a "that's not funny. That's not a joke" retort.

Only in my wank fantasies and maybe at the best parties. Incidentally, all ultra-pinkos and lesbians are particularly welcome this evening. I'm feeling kinda funny.

Generally I'm surrounded by working-class Mancunians. None of whom would identify with the "traditional Britain" promoted by the Mail, though they may be amongst its circulation figures.

If anyone I know ever said that, & it has happened - one girl I know is like that & takes her "Free Palestine" shit incredibly seriously, then it's just a massive invitation to get continuously tortured about it lol.

She's actually going to Palestine soon, fuck knows what for exactly. I was saying to her "You going over to wave banners & shout "FREE ISRAEL" aye?" She's from fucking Essex or somewhere nearby & quite often doesn't click on to the fact that you're completely taking the piss so gives pure serious answers - "No, it's "FREE PALESTIIIIIIIIIINE" hahaha. I also said she was going over there to be a suicide bomber... that didn't go down too well :\

LOL. That reminds me of the time a group of students from Leeds uni staged a sit in in one of the uni buildings to protest against Israel. I said to one of them "Israel just called, they said theyKd heard about your protest and all the Jews are packing up to leave." He wasn't very impressed either. I got the standard "very clever. What are you doing to change the world" response. Anyone would think they were Martin Luther King or some shit!

Well while we're merrily off-topic, Bluntsy, why not address my last (on-topic) post?

Or is it easier to beat on the straw-lefty for a little bit and hope people don't notice? ;)

I generally avoid the daily mail crowd like the plague too. Or they avoid me. O the joys of being economically conservative and reasonably socially progressive. It makes you loved by all. I thought you almost exclusively went out with feminists? Or are they just the most notable girlfriends?

Bypasses the expense and politics...

Seriously looking forward to the olympics, love it!

Nice it will be on at a normal sane time to, rather than watching re reuns or at some ungodly hour.

MSB: I generally end up with whoever's unfortunate enough that evening. But yeah, my long-term relationships (for what they're worth) have generally been with women of the feminist persuasion. Which isn't at all uncommon in my chosen social circles.

What I'm saying is that I don't live in a 'progressive' bubble, as you may think I do - most of my daily interaction is with 'ordinary' people with families and all that scary shit we non-traditionalist weirdos inherently fear and despise. Apparently.

So I do have some kind of perspective which I feel you're not giving me credit for.

But anyway...

I definitely agree with the fuck the Royal Family sentiment. i'm inclined towards a constitutional republic although I suppose the Royal family have played their part with regards to human rights by being utter cunts and initiating the drive towards that purpose so you can't discount them totally if you know what I mean! The battle against the upper class and so on. There was a King I'm not sure which who sacrificed his head for our rights which perpetuated itself throughout the world you can't deny that. There was some serious shit goin down in dem times fo real son. We don't really have much to be proud of through ancestral history apart from all the innovation, inventions and industrial revolution etc. Britain is a fucked up nation in reality going through massive changes on a generational basis. We must take the values best learnt from those eras and preserve them though. A lot of battles were fought here from human rights to women's rights. Common law is the groundwork for most legal systems thoughout the world, We must preserve these principles because nowadays we are getting careless about the importance of these hard fought for rights. Those principles are worth celebrating and keeping a hold on imo and most definitely yours as you'll find out should you lose them.

I appologise for what I said coming across that way. I didn't mean to imply that you were out of touch or anything. But I did assume (wrongly) that your social circle was made up of progressives/socialists who in my experience do tend to take themselves very seriously.

Maybe when I was younger. Sonny. ;)

I think your experience of progressive types reflects your age - people are naturally more extreme in their twenties, full of piss and vinegar and that.

Anyone who doesn't take themselves seriously in their twenties is surely missing the point of their twenties, no?

Ah, the three month malaise. It has occurred in every host city three months out since probably 1896. I'm pretty sure the Ancient Greeks also whinged and moaned a couple of months out because they were in the middle of some sandal war, and their mead was flat and tasteless and they couldn't see any point in all these fat cat dignitaries arriving into town and being forced to watch a bunch of naked dudes wrestle and throw shit (well, perhaps the Greeks were into the naked wrestling part, the rest was probably true).

My point is as soon as that flame is lit, and you witness some poor sap, who has trained his whole life, get pipped for a medal and collapse in tears as the victory parade passes him by you realise that the Olympics isn't about a couple of pissers and moaners sitting in front of the tele watching Eastenders while eating soggy peas on a plate. It is about the little countries with one or two competitors who have an entire village just proud that their colours are being worn on the same track as the super stars. It's about events with a history that will be remembered beyond Prime ministers or the latest iPhone model. No one gives a shit that Usan Bolt eats McDonalds or drinks coke. They will stand and roar at seeing a supreme athlete at the peak of human limits crying on the dias before striking a superman pose.

It is not about you London. No one really gives two shits that you may have invented one or two sports before failing time and time again at the penalty spot. You are just powerless spectators as the rest of the World blows into town with a flaming torch and 5 rings and will be quickly forgotten come Rio in 4 years time.

Too long didn't read? Pity there isn't a gold medal for whining.

Where did I say I hate my country or my culture? I hate the fact that our country is a mere shadow of it's former self and that every day that goes past we lose a little more of our standing in the world. The shitness of our Olympics is just going to be evidence of this. It's like you have never read a single politics related post of mine before or something.

Sorry dude, I most likely misconstrued your political awareness and accountability for which I apologise for. I just get mad at the the learnt idea that patriotism equates to xenophobia, intolerance, racism and nazisim, tis a taught idea in our educational system to drag us down as a society.
I don't think it's a bad thing to be house proud, you can be house proud no matter where you're from, that is what citizenship is all about. For instance, I think the motto 'keep Britain tidy' is a great patriotic statment. it doesn't display any hatred towards any group except for litterbugs and I think we can all agree that not littering is a good thing.

i think the Olympics will be spectacular personally, we may have fucked up Wembley but we did a pretty good job of the Commonwealth games; probably because we spawned the whole idea but hey...
