2005 Mlb!

the best part is everyone thought this would be lame because it's the first derby in the "steroid-free" stage of baseball. plus abreu is underrated. plus he's a total class act.

one of his homeruns hit some poor rube sitting in the pressbox in the side of his face. poor sucker.

Lucchino: Satisfying Ramirez trade request will be hard
July 28, 2005

BOSTON (AP) -- Manny Ramirez's trade request will be difficult to honor because of his contract, Boston Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said Thursday.

Lucchino also said he didn't know the left fielder's motivation for refusing manager Terry Francona's request to play Wednesday afternoon's game at Tampa Bay after another outfielder, Trot Nixon, was sidelined with a strained muscle in his side. Before the injury, Francona told Ramirez he could have the day off.

``It's hard to know if the events of the last couple of days are the result of sort of psychological and physical needs for a sustained period of rest or it's some calculation or some move to encourage us to trade him,'' Lucchino told WEEI radio on his regularly scheduled segment.

Lucchino and Ramirez's agent, Scott Parker, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. Team owner John Henry and general manager Theo Epstein did not respond to e-mails, and the Red Sox clubhouse was locked on their day off Thursday.

Ramirez is batting .275 with 28 homers and a major league-leading 92 RBIs for the Red Sox, who lead the AL East by 1 1/2 games over the New York Yankees. He is due $64.2 million from his $160 million, eight-year contract: $7,213,115 from Friday through the rest of this season from this year's $20 million salary, $19 million in 2006, $18 million in 2007 and $20 million in 2008. The deal also includes team options for two additional seasons at $20 million annually.

On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated reported on its Web site that Ramirez, for at least the third time in four seasons, had asked to be traded. The report said he told club officials he was unhappy in Boston, especially with an off-field lack of privacy.

The Red Sox will explore trading him before Sunday's deadline, but that will be tough, Lucchino said.

``Because of the size of his contract, obviously, it's hard,'' he said. ``There aren't a lot of clubs that are going to be interested, but it depends how little you're willing to take in return with respect to trades. I'm not talking about Manny specifically, although it certainly applies to him.''

A club might want to make a deal if it asks the Red Sox to pay 95 percent of Ramirez's salary, ``but that's not a particularly intelligent thing for us to do,'' Lucchino said.

He also said this is the fourth straight season in which Ramirez has requested a trade ``and our general response was, `it's that time of year' and we'll explore it as we explore other trades.''

Boston may resist trading Ramirez because it is short in the outfield. With Nixon on the 15-day disabled list and Ramirez not playing, Francona used first baseman Kevin Millar in left field and rookie Adam Stern in right Wednesday.

Despite leading the division, Red Sox officials would like to improve their postseason chances with a trade. Last year, Epstein sent shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs at the deadline.

``It is the time of year when you consider all manner of trades,'' Lucchino said. ``Theo is certainly willing to be bold and make moves that other GMs might shy away from, so this is the time for us to think about trades and, certainly, Manny's name will come up from time to time, I'm sure, in the next 72 hours.''

Gotta love Manny!! :)

"That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it."
Raffi has got some balls, I'll give you that.

it's gotta be tough to make yourself into a bigger jackass than canseco, but that's what this whole bullshit raffi is feeding us about confidentiality agreements is - they're binding to baseball, not to him. he can say whatever he wants, from a lamoid bonds "i didn't know that stuff might be steroids" excuse to the truth.

Thome would be the last one to test positive - He's been playing so bad this year that it's 100% clear he is off his roids.

Raffy says "Why would I do this now?" Think about how much better raffy looked than guys like thome and giambi(before his resurgence) before he got caught because his numbers were normal-ish in the testing era.

I'm fucking pissed that the Mets couldn't get Ramirez, but at the same time he seems like quite an asshole, maybe it's for the best.

Damn right it's for the best, Matt.

There's a reason every AL club executive was praying the deal would go through.

He's the most feared hitter in the AL, right up there with Ortiz and ARod.

Last year @ the deadline with Nomar.. We didn't have him all year. He was a slumping player prone to pop outs and whining. We received 3 players which made our team well rounded. His replacement, Cabrera, out performed Nomar in the 2nd half of the year.

This year would have been mainly a salary dump with Ramirez. Huff and Cameron combined couldn't hold a candle to Manny's production.

All I have to say is thank fuckin god the Devil Dogs got greedy and wanted more prospects than the Sox wanted to give. :D

I think rumors will be speculating about Clemens soon. it was eluded to on PTI today very briefly ater the first pitcher tested positive. hes turning 43 today and pitching a stingy 1.4 on the season

in a sidenote, with the help of chris carpenter, derreck lee, and a morgan ensberg pickup off waivers, I just broke into first out of 12 in my fantasy league

goddamn red sox and yankees, cant you win a playoff series without breaking 100 million in payroll. morgan ensberg gets paid 450k a year! ponder that for a few

go 'stros!

maybe the yankees will make an acquisition off waivers to block the red sox. they have the money, why not go ahead and make their payroll exactly double the red sox (at 2nd)

jesus christ did anyone see beltran and mike cameron collide head on makin a dive for the ball? i believe beltran actually made the catch. they both appeared to be unconscience on the field

I was watching it live, it was one hell of a collision. Cameron is in the hospital as we speak, no word on the extent of his injuries yet.
