2004 Mushroom season( Victoria)

if all goes ok, how long do you think it would take for my shrooms (see pic above) to get from that baby stage to a pickable stage?

Nice find there hardicus! i think i may of found some babies today, saw them as i was being driven home, in the carpark just b4 we drove off, will have to have a closer look wednesday when i go back. They were nice colour in wood mulsh undershade. Not too clusterd. Fingers crossed there good :D

Saw a bunch of shrooms that looked like subs at my mother in laws on the weekend. Couldn't investigate them because of her watchful eye but they definitley looked right. The only thing was that they were growing out of the driveway grass (buffalo, if that makes any difference). Would the fact that they weren't in the natural habitat mean they probably aren't subs?

i got some tiny p.subs growing in my garden.. i watered them the other day a bit.. they have grown some since then.. the ground is still a bit dry around them.. should i water them again and wet the ground or should i give it awhile.. also how long does it take these things to grow to a reasonable size? the caps r also turning a brownish colour which means they are maturing i guess ..

Ha I'm working with a Jim's mowing ATM and working in very rich peoples back yards lots of mushies that stain blue. Wonder if the boss would catch me putting them in my sandwitches lol.

ok guys I had a few yesterday and found a big dozen today.. theyre chillin in a paper bag ATM I dont want to have them til atleast the weekend. My question is how long will they stay fresh in a paper bag in my car for? (in this weather its pretty much a fridge outdoors) I was also thinking of storing them in honey but Im not sure how dry they should be for that storage method. Can anyone shed any light on these Qs id appreciate it.

Quiet roar - The subs i found today were growing in grass (the tallish narrow-bladed variety). Loose wet soil and some bark/mulch about is the key.

I find that you can dry them well in a slightly warm environment such as indoors. Using heat to dry them is not a good idea as they can lose potency. Once they are completely dry (4-5 days) you can put them in a jar with some sillica (those little saches of granuls that come in vitamin containers). If dried well the can easly last a whole year without losing any substantial potency.

NOTE: If done wrong you can severly affect pottency. Avoid above average (roughly 40º max) heat at all cost.

drying -

spread them out on newspaper for 24-48 hours under a fan... that will get rid of most of the moisture.

then put them in a sealed container with a damp removing agent such as damprid... make sure the damp rid doesnt come into contact with the mushrooms or else they will stay perma-wet and not edible. after another day or so they should be cracker dry - bending them will make them snap!

you can just leave them as is, not sure how long they will stay potent for that way... or else..

either powder them and put it all in honey

or powder them and make mushroom chocolates.

ive done the honey thing, it works... but make sure its with a nice tasting honey, my honey was a bit of a sickly tasting one. the chocolate thing sounds even better, u can correctly weigh the total amount, divide by the number of chocolates u make (perhaps use icecube moulds) and dose accordingly.

make sure the mushies are cracker dry before you try these techniques, esp the honey thing... honey is a near perfect medium for preserving things... it has been used to preserve things for thousands of years by other civilisations. i've heard mixed reports about people storing fresh undried mushrooms in honey... either - the water in the mushrooms will get rejected and float to the top (probably depends on how thick the honey is), or wierd moving organisms will begin growing and hatching from the honey (eggs in the mushrooms!)... not a good risk to take.

how can i get info about these chocolate shrooms ur talking about? ne link to recipie or can u post instructions/pm them.

Cheers, TheGrudge
