A leaf fell. Not even because of ocean breezes and truck emissions, because it was supposed to. I didn't know seasons happened in Southern California.

"She's so high," sings to me from a parked car.
But I'm not, so I frown instead of loving a laugh that seemed well-earned the moment I regretted the frown. Sleep deprivation is my least-favorite of all drugs.
(Unless it's 4 a.m. and the mud-flavored coffee I sip is accompanied by ambulance screams and a broken person's melted-down dreams.

Not asking for your pain. Only to be there when you break. I've always wanted to be a mechanic. What better machine than the most
finely-tuned thing on earth.)

That man over there he's in an awful hurry. but when he gets "There" its all a bunch of standing still. Who hurries to do nothing??
ALL OF US.
It's called 5 p.m., end of the work-day, finish the shift, drop the responsibility next to the culpability you shrugged off last week. Scared little bitch.

Through their mobile windows, folks imagine a million reasons that the too-thin girl with those obviously unkempt ways is resting her ass on a curb. Downtown mid-day and the nastiness on the sidewalk is getting all over her pants (lucky they were dirty already when she put them on).

Not one guesses the truth.

This is the best part of my day.

Dagny's Da Bomb

Dearest Dagny,

Your relentless dedication and uninhibited devotion are rare qualities, precious beyond words. Your tireless strength and gentle love are felt and cherished by more than just those ailing and injured souls passing through your ward. They are felt most strongly by your friends.

Fortunate indeed are the lucky few of us whose hearts have so often been filled to bursting with your endless love, strength and compassion. Though simple gratitude falls far short, thanks and friendship are all I can offer in payment for the love you share so freely, without question, condition or cost. Thank you.

You are a rare and special star, gleaming bravely in the night, shining warm light on a dark and cold world. May you never lose your bright fire, may you never lose your warm smile. Always remember that you have friends, friends whose lives were brightened by your presence and who are patiently waiting for a chance to return the favor.

With Mucho love and many butt squeezes, your (deliquent, but there whenever you need him) friend, Craig

(I'ma sappy fucker today aint I?)

I think i have sang this in my head many times. It brings back so many memories of the best kind; when you're all alone sharing them with yourself.

I'm so happy I got a chance to hug and feed that "too thin girl" recently.

The first time I read this, it made me worry, but after seeing you and talking to you, I realize that you're on your way to picking yourself up from that curb. As always, good stuff!
