A leaf fell. Not even because of ocean breezes and truck emissions, because it was supposed to. I didn't know seasons happened in Southern California.
"She's so high," sings to me from a parked car.
But I'm not, so I frown instead of loving a laugh that seemed well-earned the moment I regretted the frown. Sleep deprivation is my least-favorite of all drugs.
(Unless it's 4 a.m. and the mud-flavored coffee I sip is accompanied by ambulance screams and a broken person's melted-down dreams.
Not asking for your pain. Only to be there when you break. I've always wanted to be a mechanic. What better machine than the most
finely-tuned thing on earth.)
That man over there he's in an awful hurry. but when he gets "There" its all a bunch of standing still. Who hurries to do nothing??
ALL OF US.
It's called 5 p.m., end of the work-day, finish the shift, drop the responsibility next to the culpability you shrugged off last week. Scared little bitch.
Through their mobile windows, folks imagine a million reasons that the too-thin girl with those obviously unkempt ways is resting her ass on a curb. Downtown mid-day and the nastiness on the sidewalk is getting all over her pants (lucky they were dirty already when she put them on).
Not one guesses the truth.
This is the best part of my day.
