Mushroom Season 2011 UK / Ireland / Anywhere else

Pooks can be found on golf links a few feet above sea level, alititude aint in it but, I have noticed different distribution patterns in hilly fields between the top and bottom but I cannot say there was a numerical bias. They are where they are, the more you pick the more you realise how little you know, just get them down your neck maggots and all.

LOL. I like the Bear Grylls approach. That made me laugh. I dont suppose anyone who goes mushroom picking is too squeamish about tiny little maggots. The only way you'd even know they were there is if you spread the shrooms out on newspaper to dry, and then you'd see dozens of the things crawled out to die.

I'm sure there needs to be animals in the fields for there to be any proper chance of finding libs though? Is this correct?

Not particularly, one year we found absolutely thousands on a section of playing fields... we simply got fed up of picking and left! Noticed an elderly couple watching us from a distance but thought nothing of it. Upon returning to the spot a few days later, that section of turf had been dug up by the council...

Also found plenty on school fields before now.

Did anyone ever look for them on Gaa or soccer pitches ?

I used to put a nice pinch of dried ones into my halftime soup at the Showgrounds if that counts, the last ten minutes were always the most absorbing, we (Sligo Rovers) play on Saturday nights and one was always nicely set up for the Pub afterwards.

i live in edinburgh and im gonna go looking in my usual field on friday and ill tell you folks how it goes.

planning on headin to and a golf coarse and a few fields around where theres sometimes sheep at the weekend, where do people normally go and what time if that matters?
is there a guide on this on bluelight?

Is there much chance of going drastically wrong and picking a dangerous lookalike in Ireland??
or are the lookalikes harmless anyway

No, the look alikes can be poisionous. Do a lot of research before you go out so you're familiar with what you're after.

The first few times I went I took a load of pictures of liberty caps and it's look alikes with me to use as a reference.

A few look alikes i know of - psilocybe pelliculosa, psilocybe silvatica, conocybe tenera & coprinus atramentarius.

This site has some good info - http://www.magic-mushrooms.net/picking.html

Sorry for my total ignorance on this topic, but can you find anything other than liberty caps growing in the UK? I am thinking no... Liberty cap trips seem like they are essentially just a weird, dazed and delirious poisoning of sorts? I was pretty sure they can be bought legally all year round too. I totally understand how fun it would be to go out picking them for free, and being involved in the process though.

Theres plenty in Ireland, in wicklow anyway...saw a few myself & was driving by 'mushroom mountain' & there was loads of people out picking haha! Loads of rain this evening so id say tomorrow morning would be a great morning to pick...going last outdoor music festival tho tomorrow so they'll have to wait another week for me!

i would say that drying them is enough. once theyre dry i think they keep their potency for years although i might be mistaken.

^ spot on, freezing them is a bad idea. Just keep them dried whole vac-packed in a cupboard, or go further and grind them and then put them in capsules or a pot for a later year...this seems a bit silly though, why would you wanna keep mushrooms for years?? Share the wealth.

I can't believe the season is upon us - sunday morning I'm going for my first hunt on a nearby farm...hope it's fruitful...sheep grazing, and cows too.

Cheers folks! Gonna get some and dry them on tinfoil or a shallow tin box in front of my fan assisted oven at full blast for a while until they dry out or maybe light the stove and put them on top giving them a shake every now and then :)
